Bacchus Archives 08 |
East Side Sound, Vol. 1 : 1959-1968 |
● CD $15.98 |
31 tracks, 73 minutes, highly recommended Available again.
Incredible collection of singles of great greasy rock 'n' roll from East
L.A., the best of the Faro, Linda, Rampart & Gordo labels owned &
run by Eddie Davis, a Caucasian who fell in love with Hispanic rock.
Interestingly enough, though most of the tunes are originals, the biggest
hits were covers, including Cannibal & the Headhunter's Land Of
1000 Dances (heard here in the original version with the long intro,
edited out of the hit), The Premiers' Farmer John, & the
Blendell's La La La La. There's lots of screaming guitar &
honking tenor, instrumentals, novelties, even a surf single by Gene Gray
& The Stingrays, Surf Bunny/ Surfer's Mood, which not only
don't sound surf, but the flip side is a total rip-off of Rumble!
There's an rare early teen pop single by Larry Tamblyn & The Standells,
sequel to Farmer John, The Salas Bros - The Return Of Farmer
John, Enchantments - I'm In Love With Your Daughter, Pt. 1 and
you haven't heard anything till you've heard Las Dillys Sisters, 2
pre-pubescent Mexican girls, doing a cover of The Standells' Sometimes
The Good Guys Don't Were White! (GM)

Battle 400 |
When Country Goes Boppin' & Jivin', Vol.
2 |
● CD $19.98 |
A varied and, at times, bizarre collection of rock 'n' roll,
mostly featuring artists best known for their country recordings though
I'm not quite sure what bluesman Ray Agee is doing here though his You
Hit Me Where It Hurts is great. Includes tracks by Conway Twitty,
Denny Reed, Ella Mae Morse, Jerry Reed, Johnny Maddox, Mickey Gilley, The
Coutnry Fingers, Lorne Greene (who neither bops nor jives), The Flying
Fingers, Merv Griffin (I think it really is that one and it's terrible),
Floyd Cramer, Bob Conrad, Duane Eddy and others. Sound varies from very
good to mediocre and while there are no note you might enjoy finding all
the typos in the track listing.

"GS I Love You" - Japanese Garage
Bands Of The 1960s |
● CD $18.98 |
28 tracks, 76 minutes, highly recommended The beat boom hit
Japan a little later than the rest of the world, so that by the mid 60s
there was still a lot of bands sounding like early 60s Beatles, but with
the current technology, they were doing it with wild fuzz guitar! Known as
"Group Sound", the 3 biggest influences of GS were Mersey beat,
country, & surf music (especially the Ventures), with mixtures of all
3 heard here! The bands here are Japanese garage bands who recorded for
the Japanese indie labels Crown & Teichiku. There's plenty of covers
of western rock tunes ranging from The Swing West doing Fire by
Arthur Brown to The Burns' fuzz laden version of I Saw Her Standing
There, though my faves are The Out Cast which does Everything's
Alright & Long Tall Sally. There's plenty of surf
instrumentals, The Spiders, Wipe Out, Dynamite, & even a few Japanese
language tunes that have titles sung in English. Complete discographical
info including band photos. (GM)

Blend 004 |
Best Of Blend, Vol. 4 |
● CD $19.98 |
24 tracks, 54 min., recommended
If "blend" means
what I think it does here, i. e. that the music program as a whole blends
the various subsets of 50's rock 'n' roll, then this would seem a workable
concept for a music collection. And many styles are here, including
straight ahead white jumps like Mighty Mighty Man by Bobby Darin,
rockabilly numbers like Is That All to the Ball Mr. Hall by Billy
Lee Riley, upbeat instrumentals like Swanee River Rocket by Jimmy
Elledge, boogie numbers like House of Boogie Woogie by Hadda
Brooks, and even blues numbers like All Right Miss Moore by Jimmy
Witherspoon. What's missing is ballads. The tempo here is definitely set
for fast dancing. And there are very few numbers by vocal groups. Oh well,
where else are you going to get Jackie Leonard's Why Don't You and
Bill Darnell's Rock & Roll Baby? (DH)

Blend 006 |
Best Of Blend, Vol. 6 |
● CD $19.98 |
24 tracks, 53 min., recommended
As was the case with volume
4, reviewed above, the emphasis here is on the various permutations of up
tempo rock 'n' roll. The program opens with Ida Sweet as Apple Cider
by Bill Haley & the Comets, then moves on to I Cried by Jivin'
Gene, Georgie Slop by Jimmy McCracklin, Boogie in G by Ken
Jones, Let's Play in Love by Sonny James, Love's That Way by
Brooke Benton, Fing Fang Foy by Larry Darnell, Open the Door
by Nappy Brown, and even When the Saints Go Marching In by Sister
Rosetta Tharpe. Good music, the original recording dates of which I could
not always determine. Suffice it to say that it's all pretty much in a
late 50's style. And, finally, the cover photo, standard throughout the
series, seems also worthy of comment. The photo depicts a
rhythmically-challenged white couple in front of a juke box presumably
listening to a vibrant rock 'n' roll number and clapping out the rhythm,
she with her hands together and he with his hands apart. What, we may well
ask, is this meant to signify? (DH)
