VINTAGE ROCK 'N' ROLL & ROCKABILLY

Various Artists Collections - Collector Records - Part 2

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4425 Reallll RRRRockin' ● CD $16.98
31 tracks, 69 minutes, recommended. Bill Swing opens up fine with Messed Up/Intoxicating Blues, but this disc doesn't really get going 'til the Rumblers predict the future with their raging I Don't Need You No More. From here, we're treated to five great cuts by the one and only Johnny Powers, his awesome Long Blonde Hair/ Red Rose Lips/Rock Rock, and Mean Mistreater/Treat Me Right, and Honey Let's Go, his Fortune debut. The other standouts here are two blastin' instrumentals, Night Ride by The Invaders and Rockin' At The Phil by The Legends. (GDR)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4424 Rockabilly And Rockers ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, 69 min, good I heard more of the latter than the former on this disc but that's just splittin' hairs. Faves here are probably the instrumentals, like the intriguing Danger by the Rockets, Bobby Gibson & The Voyagers' B-52, and the early wah-wah experiment Wha-Wha Buggie by Arvil Dean & Bary Smail. Very weird. Also David Star's Teen Doll stands out, Paul McGhee rocks up You Are My Sunshine, and Little Bill sings about a cucumber (Sweet Cucumber) while Hank England sings about a kangaroo (My Little Kangaroo). There're also a number of incredibly worn "demos" that may present problems for audiophiles but I don't think rockers will mind, especially when it's Max Lipscomb blasting us back-to-back with Evening Time/Bad Times. As usual a few real gems in here. (GDR)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4438 Rockabilly Hoodlums, Vol. 1 ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, 66 mins, recommended Excellent collection of rockin' obscurities - much of it with a country flavor. Ray Taylor & The Alabma Pals are particularly fine - their Clocking My Card is pretty much straight country with a bluegrass flavor but Connie Lou & My Hamtramck Baby adds some rock 'n roll and blues to the mixture ending up with two real classic performances. And speaking of classic performances we also have here Hender Saul's great The Way I Feel. Lynn Pratt does a fine version of Sonny Burgess's Red Headed Woman and there's more good stuff from Hank Matthews, Leon & Carlos, Floyd Mack, Jesse Stevens & The Big Sandy Boys and others. Booklet has brief notes and rare photos. (FS)
WAYNE BUCHANAN: The Boy And The Guitar/ DON BURTON & THE FADS: Somebody Stop That Woman/ Tantalizin' Baby/ This Is It/ THE CARPENTER BROS & RHYTHM BOPPERS: Don't Cry Little Darling/ JEANIE CHRISTIE & EARL DURRANCE & HIS BLUE SKY: Flying High/ RUSTY HOWARD & CHUCK JOYCE & HIS CHAIN GANG BO: Let's Rock/ LEON AND CARLOS: Rock Everybody/ Rock Run Blues (instrumental)/ FLOYD MACK: I Like To Go/ HANK MATHEWS: Alabama Boogie/ LEE (RED) MELSON & THE MISSOURI NIGHTHAWKS: Carmen Sue Rock/ Rockin' Thru The Tunnel of Love/ CURTIS POTTER: I'm A Real Glad Daddy/ LYNN PRATT & HIS RHYTHM CATS: Come Here Mama/ They're Leaning/ Tom Cat Boogie/ LYNN PRATT & JUBILAIRES QUARTET: Red Headed Woman/ WAYNE ROGERS: Wayne Boogie/ THE ROUND UP BOYS: Rock And Roll Baby/ HENDER SAUL: I Ain't Gonna Rock Tonite/ BERRY SMITH & THE RADIO PALS: Berry's Bounce (instrumental)/ RANDY SPANGLER & THE COUNTRY CATS: Rock'n Roll Baby/ JESSE STEVENS & BIG SANDY BOYS: Go Boy Go/ Mama, Mama/ RAY STRONG: You're Gonna Reap What You Saw/ RAY TAYLOR & ALABAMA PALS: Clocking My Card/ Connie Lou/ My Hamtramck Baby/ THE TRESPASSERS: No Trespassing (instrumental)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4453 Rockabilly Hoodlums, Vol. 2 ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, 65 mins, very good. The second collection of hoodlums, like the first, has a strong country flavor to many of the tracks but the selection is not as interesting as the first but there are some very good tracks from Carmol Taylor (more Bakersfield country than rockabilly but very fine), Prince Arky & The Westerners (the interesting novelty Ten Horned Devil), Billy Free (the violent I'll Tear Your Playhouse Down), Tom James, The Barker Brothers and others. On the other hand there are some very forgettable sides by The Emanons, Olen Bingham, Buck Tickle and The Rambnlin' Valley Boys. The rest are somewwhere in between. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4419 Rockin' & Boppin' ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, 68 minutes, essential. A very solid collection of 50's rockers that you can pretty much play from end to end. Most of these sound like late 50's (post rockabilly) recordings, many with hot guitar and sax. If they sometimes verge on tunelessness that usually is made up for in raw energy. There are loads of great instros like Curfew by the Scavengers, Flying Saucer Rocket by Ferrell Duncan & his Rockers, Four On The Floor by the Shut Downs, Stompin' by the Viscos, etc. There's an alternate take of the classic Teenage Partner done by the Super-Phonics, Richie Deran's wonderful Girl And A Hot Rod , Jessie Lee King and his Crowns do a pair of cool rockers - Rock And Roll Rover & Nervous Wreck and Pete Cummins and the Redeemers Four split their trousers trying to do The Surfin' Freeze . 30 tracks, 65 mins, recommended. 30 rockabilly rarities including an unreleased demo from the 1950s by an unknown performer. No real classics here but I do like Al Sims country flavored and bluesy Hard Working Man and the storming instrumental Panic In The Powerplant by Don Love & His Heartbeats but it's all pretty good and includes a lot of good rockabilly and rock 'n' roll from Jimmy Bankston, Winnie Starr & The Omaha Kid, Little Johnny Poole, Lonnie Barron, Ralph Arnold, Joe Therrien Jr., Joe L. White, P.Jay & the Haystackers, Bill Davenport & His Circle D. Ranch Hands and others. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4413 Sarg Rockers Vol. 1 ● CD $16.98
25 tracks, 59 minutes, recommended. Sarg Records was another one of those small 50's labels that wound up having a big impact on rockabilly collectors if not for the public at the time. Located in a small town 40 miles from San Antonio, Texas, Sarg was started by former Air Force sargeant Charlie Fitch in 1954 to record hillbilly, but by 1956 he was kneedeep in the nascent rockabilly craze releasing numerous records. If you like hard driving rockabilly you'll love this CD. Just about everything here is decent and many are downright classic like the three Al Urban cuts, Lookin' For Money/ Won't Tell You Her Name/ Gonna Be Better Times , Dick Fagan's I Got A Ticket and I Gotta Learn , Glen Bland's When My Baby Passes By , Jeff Stone's Everybody Rock , Harmon Boazman's No Love In You and any of the 7 Cecil Moore selections. (AE)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4414 Sarg Records Vol. 2 ● CD $16.98
25 tracks, 59 minutes, recommended. The second volume of Sarg rockers isn't quite as good as the first but that's just because the classics by Al Urban, Jeff Stone, etc. were already on volume one. I'd still call this one a 'must have' because there are so many wonderful rockin' tracks. Jimmy Bazar & the Moods blast off on the saxy Let Me Have Your Love , Clyde Allen gets in the Xmas spirit with Rockin' Santa Claus , Cecil Moore is back with 4 more excellent rockers, the Medallions shake it on the instro Cross Country , Charles Lightheard and the Downbeats do a pair of fantastic R&B numbers, Come On Over Baby & Oh Please . Not only was Cecil Moore a great deep-voiced singer, he was also an ace guitar slinger as he proves on the wicked instro Diamond Back (with maracas making the rattler sound). Like Moore, Link Davis was also all over the Sarg recordings playing fiddle and sax. He's heard here on the stomper Cockroach . Lots more too. (AE)
NORMAN BARRON & THE MEDALLIONS: I Love You True/ BIG FOOT WALLACE: Rockin' Santa Claus/ GLENN BLAND: Mean Gene/ EDDIE BOWERS: Rockin' And A Boppin'/ LINK DAVIS: Cockroach/ JIMMY FARMER: Long Black Train/ BILL GAIDA: Rockin' Romance/ Take A Massage Darlin'/ Yes Baby, I'm Scared/ ADOLPH HOFNER: Pipeliner Blues/ BILL HORNY: Patterned After You/ CHARLES LIGHTEARD & THE DOWNBEATS: Come On Over You/ Oh Please/ THE MEDALLIONS: Cross Country/ THE MIDNIGHTERS: Grubby Guitar/ Now How You Gonna Act/ Now How You Gonna Act (alternate take)/ THE MOODS: On the Move/ CECIL MOORE: Diamond Back/ G I Blues/ My Money's Gone/ Rise And Shine/ CHESTER McINTYRE: I'm Gonna Rock With My Baby Tonight/ JIMMY PAYNE & THE MIDNIGHTERS: I Get The Blues/ CLYDE WALLACE & THE MOODS: Let Me Have Your Love

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4465 Second Time Rockin' ● CD $16.98
32 tracks, 72 mins, very good
A diverse selection of obscurities with a high proportion of indifferent material. Among the highlights are the exciting It Makes No Difference by Billy Mache & The Starfire, the Buddy Holly flavored I'll Be There by Rick Tucker & The Turks, Johnny Laury's stripped down cover of Johnny Horton's Honky Tonk Man, some unissued demos by Billy Lee and a few others. Much of the rest is fairly forgettable and some are downright bad - You Rock Me Jean by Bobby Dino & Buddy Lucas & His Dynatones has a fine band and one of the worst vocals I've ever heard! There are also some straight ahead bluegrass and country songs which are fine but out of place in a collection like this. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4452 Slow ... Boogie ... Rockin' ● CD $16.98
31 tracks, 71 mins, recommended. Delightful and intriguing collection concentrating on "medium tempo boppers" from the 50s and early 60s which means we are in for a lot of hillbilly flavored material with a strong blues flavor. In addition to the expected Elvis influences we also hear the influences of Jimmy Rodgers (Why Don't You Change Your Ways by Tex Holland) and Muddy Waters (a great and unexpected country flavored version of Muddy's Hootchie Kootchie Man by Gaylon Christie & the Down beats). Lots of other goodies from Lloyd Harp & His Hoosier Rhythm Boys, Bink Burns, The Wild Childs, Joey rand, Don Turman & The Vibrasonics and many more. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4476 Slow ... Boogie ... Rockin', Vol. 3 ● CD $16.98
32 tracks, recommended
The third collection in this series is another enjoyable collection of 32 tracks concentrating on "medium tempo boppers" from the 50s and early 60s which means a lot of hillbilly flavored material with a strong blues flavor. There are several hard driving instrumentals including Rock Guitar Rock by Bernie Moore & The Rockets, Panic by The Palais Royals, The Growl by Alan Pierce & The Tonekings and others. Johnny Guidry does a nice swampy cover of Larry Williams' High School Dance and The Fabulous Jokers cover Gene Vincent's Wear My Ring. I also really like Luke Askew's blues Bells. Other artists include Eldon Bryson, Tony Senn, George Garrish & The J.B. Combo, Johnny & The Shadows, The Sharps, John Kreischer (a chaotic version of the Lefty Frizzell favorite Smoking Cigarettes & Drinking Coffee Blues), Billy Taylor, The D&S Wildcats, Billy Nettles & His Dixie Blue Boys, Art Gunn & The Playboys, Kenny Dale, Noel Stookey & His Corsairs (could this be Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary?), Tommy Collins (a nice version of Heartbreak Hotel - I don't think this is the Bakersfield singer), Vince Warner & The PIke County, and others. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4418 Wild Rock & Roll Instrumentals ● CD $16.98
White Label/ Collector always has done a fine job uncovering the scads of instrumentals made in the 50's for small labels. A 30 track collection of all instros might be a bit much for some but for the hardcore guitar (and sax) fan this is heaven. Although everything here isn't totally "wild" but there are plenty that fit the bill like the oh-so-cool Ghost Train by the Swanks, the aptly named Rampage by the Thunderrocks, the Night Caps' dangerous Wild Cat , the Sting Rays' tremelo-laiden Mad Surfer , Bill Duzan & the Corvettes' wild Shaften , etc. Most are merely really good pickin' romps, which ain't bad partner. Other groups include P.J.& his Headliners (doing a rockin' version of Anchor's Away ), the Rockets, the Tornados, the Checkers, the Devrons, the Royaltones, etc. (AE)
THE ABOOTAY'S: Pig Bone/ THE CHECKERS: Blue Saturday/ THE CORVETTES: Shaften/ DAVE'S TRAVELERS: Traveler Rock/ THE DEVRONS: Brand/ THE FENDERMEN: Fas-Nacht-Kuechel/ EL GASSAWAY: The Big Gass/ SKIP HASTON: Skip's Boogie/ AL HENDRIX & JOLLY JODY: Go, Daddy, Go/ JORRIS HENNESSEE: Jorris Boogie/ THE LIGENDS: Lariat/ BILL LOGSDON: Spitfire/ THE NITE CAPS: Wildcat/ P.J.& HEADLINERS: Anchor Rock/ CHARLIE PHILLIPS: Roy's Romp/ THE RENEGADES: Line Drive/ THE ROCKETS: Moovin' 'N' Groovin'/ JOHNNY ROGERS: Ramrod/ ROY & ROYALS: The Royal '''/ THE ROYAL TEENS: Mad Gass/ THE ROYALTONES: Clip Clop/ X DEAN SCOTT: The Trance/ THE STARFIRES: Space Needle/ THE STING RAYS: Mad Surfer/ THE SWANKS: Ghost Train/ THE THUNDERROCKS: Rampage/ Shadow/ THE TORNADOS: Scalping Party/ DENNIS VOLK: Dennis Boogie/ ROBERT & GENE WILSON: Jamboree Rock

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collector 4423 Wild Rockin' ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, 70 minutes, recommended. One of the best of the Collector/White Label sets I've heard in quite awhile! The wild rockin' & rockabilly outnumbers the rockin' country stuff, & the sound quality is great, often from original tapes! The set starts off with 6 by Gene Nelson, with The Rockets & the Bellboys, including 2 takes of his My Rockin' Baby & covers of Whole Lotta Shakin' & School Days. Next there's 5 originals by Bob Calloway with both The Spiro Hepcats & The Clicks including What's The Matter With Me. The rest includes multiple tracks by the likes of Clyde Owens, with the Tunesetters & the Moonlight Ramblers (Right & Ready), a couple great ones from Benny Cliff (Shake Um Up Rock), Don Coates & the Playbacks (Jiggedy Wiggedy Wolly, & more ! No liner notes, but plenty of pics of the bands & the original 45s! (GM)
BOB CALLAWAY & THE CLICKS: Could It Be Love/ Lookout For The Clothesline/ BOB CALLAWAY & THE SPIRO HEPCATS: Tick Tock/ BOB CALLAWAY & THE CLICKS: Wake Up Little Boy Blue/ BOB CALLAWAY & THE SPIRO HEPCATS: What's The Matter With Me/ BENNY CLIFF: Crazy Mama/ Shake Um Up Rock/ DON COATES & THE PLAYBACKS: Jiggedy Wiggedy Wolly/ Spinnin' My Wheels/ KIMBLE & WANDA JANES & GENE PARSON'S BAN: Night Club Rock And Roll/ DORSE LEWIS (THE SCARED COAL MINER): Mexican Twist/ CURTIS LONG & THE RHYTHM ROCKERS: Hootchey Cootchey/ FRED NETHERTON & THE WILDWOOD PLAYBOYS: Matchbox/ JACKIE O'NEAL & THE REBEL ROCKERS: You Broke My Heart/ KENNY OWENS: Frog Man Hop/ CLYDE OWENS & THE TUNESTERS: Right And Ready/ Rock My Baby/ CLYDE OWENS & THE MOONLIGHT RAMBLERS: Swing It, Little Katy/ PETE & JIMMY & THE RHYTHM KNIGHTS: So Wild/ LARRY TERRY: Hep Cat/ TENNESSEE THOMPSON: Saturday Ball/ Slippin' & Slidin'/ DENNIS VOLK: You Are The One/ WALLACE WATERS: Holiday Hill/ GENE WATSON & THE ROCKETS: Drummer Boy Rock/ GENE WATSON & THE BELL BOYS: Interplanetary Rock/ GENE WATSON & THE ROCKETS: My Rockin' Baby #1/ My Rockin' Baby #2/ GENE WATSON & THE BELL BOYS: School Day/ Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On
