ROCK 'N' ROLL & ROCKABILLY
Various
Artists Collections - Collector Records - Part 1
| INTRODUCTION: Collector Records is run by
obsessive Dutch collector Cees Klop who started issuing LPs of rare 50s
rockabilly and rock 'n' roll in the 70s on his White Label. After nearly
two hundred LP releases (!) he switched to compact disc in 1991reissuing
some of the previously reissued material as well as a whole heap of
newly unearthed material. In addition to reissuing rare 45s he has
tracked down artists, record labels and recording studios resulting in
releases which include alternate takes, unissued songs, demos and home
recordings. Some of the releases have a regional or thematic slant but
most are just miscellaneous collections. Sound quality is decent considering the origin of some of the material and the packaging is
pleasing in a down home way with slim booklets with photos and label
shots and occasional notes. Some of the material is of marginal musical
value but almost every release has some really excellent material and
the real enthusiast will want 'em all. |

Automatic Bop - 31 Rockabilly Burners |
● CD $16.98 |
31 Tracks, 64 min., very good Another collection of
obscurities from Collector Records. I don't think I had heard of any of
these artists before listening to this CD. We've got Clearance Howard and
The Renegades, Stuffy and The Uniques, Ralph Robbins and The Rock-Its....
the list goes on. Among the 31 cuts are 3 instrumentals, none of them
really good. Generally, compilations from Collector Records are
inconsistent, but the great songs make it worthwhile. This CD was a step
below their usual standards in terms of finding real jewels among the
junk. Final scorecard: 2 great tracks, 9 very goods, 13 goods and 7
fillers. (RS)

Dixie Rock & Roll |
● CD $16.98 |
Dixie Records was formed as an offshoot to Starday Records
(from Texas) in the 50's and sometimes featured artists that Starday
wanted to try out but mostly seems to have been a custom label. This 30
tune collection gives a good overview of their many releases (although
some may be unrelated to "the" Dixie label) in the rockabilly
vein. There's some real raw stuff here to be sure like 2 of the only tunes
I know of to feature a banjo in a rock 'n' roll lineup - Jessie Floyd's Satan's
Wife (great title, huh?) and Pete Peters' Rockin' In My Sweet
Baby's Arms . Some of the best are Alden Holloway's Blast Off ,
Tommy Nelson's Hobo Bop , Bill Carroll's I Feel So Good ,
Eddie Skelton's instro Rebel's Retreat and too many more to list.
Highly recommended to anyone searching for some hot rockin' sounds. (AE)

Early Canadian Rockers, Vol 2 |
● CD $16.98 |
31 tracks, 71 minutes, good. Despite the occasional dud, this
volume is definitely much better, with more tracks packin' the oomph that
was kinda scarce on Vol. 1, like The Prowlers' Rock Me Baby, the
British Columbian Jim Morrison's Ready To Rock, and the Ducats
great group rocker Hey Woman. There's also some cool
C&W/Rockabilly-influenced stuff that was missing from the previous
volume like Keray Regan's Vibratin', Buddy Burke's That Big Old
Moon, and the Stolz Brothers Rock & Roll Riot. Let's hope
that whenever Collector unleashes volume three that it's more in this
vein. (GDR)

● CD $16.98 |
31 tracks, 71 min, recommended I seem to recall not being
very impressed with the first volume in this series, but Vol. 2 was much
better and this one's the best yet! What we got here is a heap of
rockabilly and hillbilly-influenced numbers like the Italian Cowboy Guido
D'Amico's Jimmy Boy/I'm In Love With You, Rudy Hayden's raw Want
Me A Woman, and Joe Kozak & The Frontiersmen's great Hillbilly
Rock. Also, Marcel St. Jean sings convincingly about his Big Black
Jacket, Doug Moore rocks his national pastime on A Leaf Fan's Dream,
and the Blue Skyliners scream about their Little Little Man. The
Asteroids come up with a great title on Don't Dig This Algebra, the
Offbeats do a fine cover of Wild Weekend, and Bob Regan's Teen-age
Boogie is pretty hot too. All in all, as solid as most discs in the
vast Collector catalog and definitely the pick of the series so far. (GDR)

Early Missouri Rockers From Jan Records |
● CD $16.98 |
33 Tracks, 71 min., recommended It goes without saying that
any rockabilly compilation of unknown bands is going to be uneven, this
one is more uneven than most. The first half of this CD had me asking,
"What's the point?" A group called the Rebel Rousers does 9 of
the first 18 cuts and they include covers of Maybelline, Great
Balls Of Fire and Bony Moronie and they're just not good enough
and neither are the other bands on the first half. But then we get five
songs by The Orbits and four by The Night Rockers and these bands are so
ragged but they are so right.... lots of twang. The Rebel Rousers come
back for four tunes, three of them instrumentals, and they sound great.
Collector Records always has some cool instrumentals on their
compilations, this CD has 14 of them. Final score card: 8 tracks are
great, 7 are really good, 10 are good and another 8 are filler. That's
more great songs and more filler than you usually get... remember, you can
always skip bad songs, but you can't always find great songs. (RS)

Fantastic Rock & Roll |
● CD $16.98 |
This CD is truly what the title says. It's like someone went
through the first dozen or so White Label LP's and pulled out the best
rockabilly tunes. The Lonesome Drifter was really a master at rockin' up a
country rhythm as best heard on the stupendous Eager Boy and Teardrop
Valley . Charlie Brown does much the same thing on his 4 tunes. The 2
Mickey Hawks and the Nighthawks' classics, Rock & Roll Rhythm
and Bip Bop Boom , are always welcome to the party, and Be Bop
Battlin' Ball by Eddie Gaines creates enough commotion to single to
singlehandedly start a party. Rock & Roll On A Saturday Night
by Dwain Bell, Big Sandy by Joe Griffith and Wait A Little Baby
by Jimmy Roby are just 3 more topflight rockers on this generous 25
tracker. Highly recommended. (AE)

30 tracks, 71 minutes, essential. Wonderful collection of

With a whole heapin' helping of 30 (yes, count 'em) gal
rockers don't expect much of a blow by blow account from me. Let's just
say that this collection is a great value for the money, even if some of

Tall Woman and Betty Jo - Eskimo Boogie , through out'n'out
rockers like Tonya Dee and the Dischords - Shake This Town , Connie

Minnesota Rockers, Vol 1 |
● CD $16.98 |
32 tracks, 71 minutes, good. This state's best known for
spawning the Trashmen and before that the Fendermen, and some of these
unknowns will show you that wasn't no fluke. Leading the pack is mighty
Myron Lee & the Caddies who like to rock out on nursery rhymes like Mary's
Swingin' Lamb before they lay into Homicide and Aw C'Mon
Baby. The Rhythm Rockers bash out a crude instro Twang, and the
Rockin' Tones show us why they won the local talent contest in '58 with What's
The Score. Other highlights include the Vibratones' Moanin' Bass,
Johnny Val's strange Hey Mama, Damon Lee's Buddy Holly-like Say
Mama, and others from the vaults of Gaity and Soma. (GDR)

More Great Rockin' Girls |
● CD $16.98 |
30 Tracks, 68 minutes, recommended. 30 more rockin' gal
records on this wonderful CD collection. This isn't padded out with pop
tunes either. Just about every tune is either a boppin' hillbilly or a
rocker. That's not to say that they're all great because more than a few
are flawed by a lackluster band, off key singing or something. There are
plenty of classics though like Joyce Green's wailin' Black Cadillac
, Sherree Scott's Fascinating Baby , Stormy Gayle's Flipsville
, etc. These gals were pretty wild for their time as you'll find out on
crazy rockers like Oneda Harding's Bald Headed Twister , Bolean
Barry's Long Sideburns , Mari Jones' Riba Daba Doo and one
of the nuttiest tunes ever cut, A Fish House Function by Emmy Oro
& Her Rhythm Escorts. (AE)

Nau Voo Rock And Roll |
● CD $16.98 |
25 tracks, 59 minutes, recommended. The Nau-Voo label was
started in West Portsmouth, Ohio in the 50's by Glen McKinney. He recorded
and released rockabilly on Nau-Voo and also leased some of the better ones
like Billy Adams' You Heard Me Knocking and Bobby Lawson's Baby
Don't Be That Way . McKinney was no Sam Phillips but he knew how to
record rock'n'roll. Virtually all of the 25 tracks here are wild and
primitive rockers with really good singing and guitar playing. Standouts
include the 2 already mentioned plus Deacon & the Rock & Rollers -
Rockin' On The Moon , the IV Leaguers - Jim Jamin' ,
Lawson's If You Want My Love , Adams' You Gotta Have A Ducktail
, Fun House and Return Of The All American Boy , the
Untouchables' I Don't Know (the only country rocker here) and many
more. (AE)

Obscure And Rockin' |
● CD $16.98 |
32 tracks, 69 min, good "Obscure And Rockin'"
seems like quite an understatement in the face of Collector's avalanche of
unknown '50's nuggets, but an appropriate title nontheless. This disc
takes a while to heat up, but that noisy ruckus the Thunderbirds call Flying
Saucers oughta catch your ear, and Little Ted & The Novas' Baby-Baby-Baby
ain't too shabby either. You can actually hear the needle quivering in its
grooves on Leon James & The Homotones Baby Let's Rock, and
Curtis Lee turns in two back-to-back pounders I Never Knew What Love
Could Do/Gotta Have You. The Rhythm Rockers aren't happy 'cuz someones'
Giving Everything Away, and Gaylon Wayne dreams of his High
School On Fire. There's also a couple of cuts by Tiny Tim & The
Tornadoes, but I didn't hear a ukelele-- I guess we'll have to wait for
the Early Hawaiian Rockers series for that! (GDR)

Great 30 track collection of rockabilly and country rockers
from rockabilly Mecca - Memphis. Eddie Bond and the Stompers do their mean
and rotten Look Like A Monkey , Marlon Grisham shakes the rafters

and Humdinger from his guitar, Joe E. May sings as fine a country
rocker as you'll ever hear on Don't You Fool With Me , and Tiny
Fuller gets down on Cat Walk , a boss harp and guitar instro. Bud
Deckleman does a nice mid-tempo version of Barefoot Rock , the
Stompers put their best foot forward on the instrumental Country
Shindig featuring some tasty steel work. The guitar on Ray Scott's San
Antone is so raunchy it'll make your hair stand on end, and his You

Sam are a couple of rockabilly classics from Don Willis & the
