ROCK 'N' ROLL & ROCKABILLY
The
Flat Duo Jets -> Bobby Fuller
| THE FLAT DUO JETS |
Norton CED 230 |
Safari |
● CD $13.98 |
34 tracks, 75 minutes, fans only. A brain-numbing 34 tracks
by this rocking pair from North Carolina - Dex Romweber (guitar and
vocals) and a guy that goes by the name of Crow (drums) - taken from a
variety of home recordings and live gigs. For the most part they just
blast through a buncha rockin' tunes with very little subtlety or wit and
only a passing nod to conventional guitar tuning. Haze Atkins sounds like
Buddy Holly next to these guys. The tunes with the least amount (like
none) of Dex's croaking vocals are the most palatable. Dexter's Lament/
Voodoo Voodoo/ Fuzzy And Wild/ Rock It/ Jungle Drums/ Rock Your Baby/ Mr.
Guitar , etc. (AE)

Come Softly To Me - The Very Best Of The
Fleetwoods |
● CD $11.98 |
28 tracks, 67 min., recommended Three years ago, Rhino put
out a nice, 18 track Fleetwoods disc, but this new one from EMI, even with
a dozen cuts in common with its predecessor, is still worth considering.
It's got ten more cuts overall (and they're good ones), a full discography
for both singles and lps, pictures of all of their lps and eps, and many
more photos of the group. The tracks include their hits - Come Softly
to Me/ Mr. Blue/ Runaround, and The Great Imposter - plus You
Mean Everything to Me/ Outside My Window/ Lavender Blue/ My Special Lover,
and Before and After (Losing You). A class job from start to
finish, and it even features excellent a cappella versions of Unchained
Melody/ Come Softly to Me, and Mr. Blue. (DH)

| ROSIE FLORES |
Hightone HCD 8067 |
Rockabilly Filly |
● CD $16.98 |
13 tracks, 36 mins, highly recommended This latest release
by long time Roots and Rhythm favorite Rosie Flores really rocks! Rosie
indulges her long standing passion for rockabilly that goes back to her
first group "Rosie and the Re Bopping Screamers". She's invited
rockabilly filly legends Janet Martin and Wanda Jackson along for the
ride. They sing harmony and occasionally trade verses with Rosie on four
numbers. The tunes are divided between Flores originals like Wrong Side
of My Heart and You Tear Me Up and various other rockabilly and
country tunes. Lefty Frizzell's Legends is included as well as a
version of Butch Handcock's Boxcars. (DP)

| EDDIE FONTAINE |
Teenager 603 |
Nothin' Shakin' |
● CD $17.98 |
29 tracks, 69 mins, recommended Though not a household name,
Eddie's known for a number of things, including the great Nothin'
Shakin' (But The Leaves On The Tree) which the Beatles covered and Cool
It Baby that he did in
Girl Can't Help It. This collection reveals Eddie to be a fine and
powerful singer with a nice raspy style which he uses to good effect on a
number of rockers here like Don't You Know/ Goodness It's Gladys/ Stand
On That Rock/ One And Only/ East Of The Mississippi and others -
several featuring that nice spidery guitar work that makes that Nothin'
Shakin' so distinctive. There are also some forgettable pop and night
club style material but in general this is worthwhile with decent sound
and even some notes. (FS)

Bear Family BCD 15616 |
White Sox, Pink Lipstick..And Stupid Cupid -
In The 50s |
● CD $113.98 |
5 discs, 134 tracks, 372 min., good. A treat for fans of the
most popular female singer of the late 50s and early 60s, but be
forewarned that this compilation includes almost everything that she
recorded for MGM in the 1950s, and the vast majority of it is
straightforward pop music with little or no hint of the modest rock 'n'
roll styling that marked most of her hits. A measure of the thoroughness
here is the fact that disc one ends with five tracks recorded on
television programs such as the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout Show when
Francis was still a preteen. In terms of the collection's other
selections, every hit that she recorded up to the end of 1959 is here,
from The Majesty of Love with Marvin Rainwater, Who's Sorry Now,
and Stupid Cupid to Lipstick on Your Collar/ My Happiness,
and Among My Souvenirs. Additional cuts include The Gypsy/ Peace
in the Valley/ God Bless America/ Sincerely/ Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a
Dixie Melody/ Come Rain or Come Shine, and Prisoner of Love.
All in all, a typical Bear Family boxed set, lavish and first class in
every way, with each disc in its own jewel box, a 12 x 12 booklet 40 pages
long, full discography for the period covered, thorough and intelligent
notes, and fine graphics. (DH)
