GREG PICCOLO & HEAVY JUICE Fantasy 9676 Red Lights ● CD $15.98
11 tracks, 64 min., recommended A member of Roomful Of Blues between 1970-1994, Gregory Joseph Piccolo has proven himself to be more than just a great saxophone player. As with the previous Fantasy CD ("Acid Blue"), his guitar playing is featured on original songs like "Rockin' Chair", "Everything I Turn Around", and "Money". Highlights include the original instrumental "Acid Blue", the 1966 Duke Ellington tune "Blue Pepper", and Freddie "Taxi" Mitchell's 1952 Derby recording tribute to Alan Freed, "Moon Dog Boogie". For more details on Greg Piccolo, visit his Web site at http://www.gregpiccolo.com. (EL)

WILSON PICKETT Bullseye Blues 9625 It's Harder Now ● CD $15.98
Back when Pickett did his last "comeback", American Soul Man, for Motown in '87, his voice was great, but the songs sucked & he was backed by synths! A dozen years later, as Pickett says in the liner, "This album contains no samples, loops, or digital instruments". All the tunes are new originals (which all seem to have writing credits shared by producer/ guitarist & former new waver Jon Tiven & his bassist wife Sally) written, by Pickett, Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts & Don Covay, with the band a basic keyboard quartet with horn section, including former Free drummer Simon Kirke! Pickett seems to be having fun on the sessions & the tunes fit him - recommended! Soul Survivor/ What's Under That Dress/ All About Sex. (GM)

WILSON PICKETT Collectables 7767 The Wicked Pickett CD $12.98
12 tracks, 31 mins, essential
One of the all-time great soul LP's (originally Atlantic 8183 - 1966) put together by the brain trust of Jerry Wexler, Rick Hall and Tom Dowd. The Muscle Shoals crew really shines on this one, perfectly complementing the wicked one's almost out-of-control soul style. Three big dance hits here - Mustang Sally/ Everybody Needs Somebody To Love/ Knock On Wood plus lots more great soul like Penn/Oldham penned Up Tight Good Woman plus New Orleans/ She Ain't Gonna Do Right, etc. (AE)

WILSON PICKETT Collectables 7768 The Sound Of Wilson Pickett CD $12.98
11 tracks, 30 mins, highly recommended
Reissue of classic 1967 album (Atlantic 8145) featuring 11 great tracks - Soul Dance Number Three/ I Need A Lot Of Loving Every Day/ I Found A Love, Parts 1 & 2 (a superb 1967 remake of a song he first recorded in 1962 as member of the Detroit soul group The Falcons)/ Mojo Mamma/ Something Within Me/ Love Is A Beautiful Thing, etc. Includes original liner notes. (FS)

WILSON PICKETT Collectables 7769 The Midnight Mover CD $12.98
Reissue of Atlantic 8183 from 1966 with ten hot songs - mostly from the pen of Pickett himself and the upcoming Bobby Womack including the great title song.

WILSON PICKETT Rhino 70287 A Man And A Half ● CD $25.98
Right from the start, as shown by his sweat-inducing lead on The Falcon's I Found A Love (the first cut here), Wilson Pickett pushed soul music to its most intense extremes. His gospel schooling with The Violinaires stamped that explosive voice for all time; listen to the pure revival spirit of It's Too Late/ I'm Not Tired/ That's A Man's Way/ I Found A True Love and even the non-LP Mini-Skirt Minnie. He even rivaled James Brown on Three Time Loser/ Ninety-Nine And A Half/ She's Looking Good. But Wilson was more than just a gospel-bred screamer. When a song demanded subtlety, he was right on the money, especially on Let Me Be Your Boy/ Jealous Love/ I've Come A Long Way/ You Keep Me Hangin' On; even the vapid I'm In Love is rescued by his marvelous delivery. Teaming with Stax/ Atlantic talent in 1965, a string of hits (In The Midnight Hour/ Don't Fight It/ 634-5789/ Land Of 1000 Dances/ Mustang Sally/ Funky Broadway and more) put him in the soul pantheon. The second CD of this double set contains post-1967 successes like She Said Yes/ Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You/ Funk Factory/ Don't Knock My Love/ Call My Name, I'll Be There, and the psychedelic funk of Get Me Back On Time, Engine #9. These years also spawned some regrettable cover versions, along with formularized but gritty southern soul, often driven by a ragged, road-weary voice. Occasional cuts do sound unusually harsh, but most of these 44 tracks are clear and punchy. Shortcomings aside, this is still an incredible collection that, like Pickett's best songs, rarely loses touch with the gospel roots. One of the best soul sets ever. (MB)

WILSON PICKETT Rhino 71212 The Very Best Of Wilson Pickett ● CD $11.98
16 tracks, 49 min., recommended
Every song but one (the 1967 version of I Found A Love) is on Man And A Half, but if you don't have that set, this is absolutely essential. The smash hits In The Midnight Hour/ 634-5789/ Land Of 1000 Dances/ Mustang Sally/ Funky Broadway are placed first; other notables include I'm In Love/ Engine #9/ Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You/ Don't Knock My Love.  (MB)

WILSON PICKETT Rhino 71275 In The Midnight Hour ● CD $11.98
12 tracks, 31 min., recommended
CD reissue of Pickett's first LP (Atlantic 8114) from 1965, it's really a collection of singles from '61-'65 that mark the development of his frenetic brand of soul. The three earliest cuts are Pickett leading The Falcons; I Found A Love was a sizable hit, while Take This Love I Got is 50% shouts in the hard gospel tradition whence the Wicked One came. The career maker for Picket though was the #1 R&B title track, which stands as one of the most unforgettable soul songs of its decade. Like it, its successor Don't Fight It (included here) was a hit co-written by Pickett and guitarist Steve Cropper. Short but sweet. (JC)

WILSON PICKETT Rhino 71276 The Exciting Wilson Pickett ● CD $11.98
12 tracks, 31 min., recommended
There's more than a little James Brown in Wilson Pickett's reading (shouting) of Chris Kenner's Land Of 1000 Dances, maybe that's why it's such a great way to open an album. "Exciting", from 1966, is consistently fine whether Wilson's busy savaging his pipes with unintelligible grunts and screams or giving the ladies love advice. Atlantic liked In The Midnight Hour so much it picked it up off his debut LP and set it down on here. (I doubt that anyone complained.) The other hits, 634-5789/ Ninety-Nine And A Half (Won't Do), were both written with Eddie Floyd and feature first class musical support from Isaac Hayes, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Al Jackson, Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love, and others in Memphis. The non-hits couldn't have missed by much. (JC)

JIMMY PRESTON Flyright FLYCD 33 1948 - 1950 ● CD $16.98
20 rockin' post-war tracks from this dynamic vocalist/ alto saxman, culled from Krazy Kat LP's 806 & 827. Preston's 1949 platter Rock This Joint is his biggest claim to fame, often referred to as the first "rock'n'roll beat" record. Joint predates Jackie Brenston's groundbreaking Rocket 88, and became a hit when covered by Bill Haley a few years later. Preston's mix of jump and blues never saw much chart action, but is notable for the presence of solid sidemen like tenor saxist Benny Golson and guitarist Bill Jennings. (MB)

Solid, unadulterated R&B. (OLN)

LLOYD PRICE Specialty SPCD 7047 Vol. 2 - Heavy Dreams ● CD $15.98
23 tracks, 57 min., recommended Price joined the Specialty label when he was a mere 17 years old, but he'd already been fronting a small combo act for several years. So it should come as no surprise that, backed by some of New Orleans' finest session men - including Dave Bartholomew, Herb Hardesty, Lee Allen, Earl Palmer, and even Fats Domino - he produced numerous charted hits in the early to mid-50s. Top ten r&b numbers featured here include Oooh-Oooh-Oooh/ Restless Heart/ Tell Me Pretty Baby, and Ain't It a Shame. Prime Crescent City music from start to finish and a fitting companion to Volume One by the same artist. Sound quality, graphics, and notes are all solid. Hats off again to Billy Vera, who is producing this reissue series for Fantasy Records. ( DH )

THE PRIMETTES/ EDDIE FLOYD Ember 3398 Looking Back ● CD $15.98
The reactivated Ember label reissues recordings made for Robert West's Lupine label in Detroit in the late 50s/early 60s. Seven tracks each by The Primettes who later went on to fame and fortune when they recorded for Motown as The Supremes and seven by Floyd who later went on to bigger and better things. The music here is pretty awful and is matched by the poor recording quality but I suppose it has some historical value.

THE PRISONAIRES Bear Family BCD 15523 Just Walkin' In The Rain ● CD $21.98
26 tunes on this wonderful new CD from Bear Family comprising every song the Prisonaires (inmates at Tennessee State Penitentiary) recorded for Sun Records from 1953 to 1955. Led by lead tenor Johnny Bragg, the Prisonaires were modeled on The Inkspots, singing some of the most heartrending songs ever recorded like Just Walkin' In The Rain , A Prisoner's Prayer and No More Tears as well as a fair amount of more upbeat material in the style of the popular Black quartets of the era. They also showed alot of promise with the emerging rock 'n' roll/ R&B style on tunes like That Chick's Too Young To Fry , Lucille, I Want You and Rockin' Horse . A sharp 28 page booklet with discography and many photos make this the definitive package of Prisonaires recordings. (AE)
