14 tracks, 33 min., recommended. This first volume in the two from Collectables that will review the output of New York's Gone Records is a winner. The featured artists to some extent are the Dubs with four cuts here: Don't Ask Me to Be Lonely/ Such Lovin'/ Beside My Love, and Chapel of Dreams. Numbers by other contributors include the delightful and previously unreleased Bad News by the Carouseles (sic), Angel Face by the Neons, Spanish Lace by the Four Seasons, How Was I to Know by the Uniques, and Stay As You Are by the Channels. Fine sound, decent graphics featuring an original Gone record label, and, instead of notes, a complete listing of the tracks on all of the discs in this series, something that a cynic might well regard as an advertisement. 14 tracks, 34 min., recommended Another entry in the current record-label-based series from Collectables, with this second set focusing on the Gone label again dominated by four tracks by the Dubs: Could This Be Magic/ Is There a Love for Me/ You're Free to Go, and Be Sure (My Love). Other selections include Come On Home by the Enchantments, My Secret Love by the Carter Rays, I'm So Unhappy by the Uniques, and If You Want To by the Carousels. Some tracks are in true stereo. The sound in general is excellent, the graphics are essentially the same throughout the series, and there are no notes at all. I wonder if it occurred to anyone at Collectables that both volumes under each label name would have comfortably fit on one disc? Hmmm. Apparently not. (DH)

14 tracks, 37 min., recommended Though the repeating cover art in this series is by now boringly generic and the total lack of liner notes is an insult to serious students of American musical history, there's no denying that the Collectables Spotlights series has reissued some damn fine vocal group music. And the two volumes in the Gotham Records series are no exception to that rule. Highlights on volume one include God Only Knows and Let's Linger Awhile by the Capris, Bluebird of Happiness and Lonely Room by Lee Andrews and the Hearts, Fool Heart and We're Getting Married by the Whispers, and I'm a Little Liar by the Kings. Vintage mid-50's material in the Philadelphia mold, sometimes mournful, and, from a professional point of view, often just a bit crude. Not to be missed. (DH)

14 tracks, 37 min., recommended Volume two of this review of label owner Ivin Ballen's contribution to r&b history opens with a rather rough sounding Just Suppose by Lee Andrews and the Hearts. Fortunately sound quality improves with subsequent selections such as Are You Sorry by the Whispers, Yes by the wonderfully smooth Cap-Tans, I Hear Those Bells by the Kings, Honest by the Gazelles, Don't Cry Little Darlin' by the Ballenaires (named, one presumes, for the esteemed company boss), and Until the End of Time by Doris Browne and group. As was the case with volume one, the music alone is worth the price of admission - which is good, since there are so few other virtues to comment on. (DH)

25 tracks, 63 min., recommended The folks at Collectables may finally be realizing something that Relic figured out a long time ago: 14 cuts per disc just doesn't cut it in the reissue world. At least, this time around, the program is twice that long. Highlights include Tonite-Tonite by the Mello-Kings, Ship of Love by the Nutmegs, Congratulations by the Turbans, Lizabeth by the Thrillers, Tell Me Why by the Sunbeams, Bells of Love by the Mint Juleps, Eternal Love by the Heralds, So Help Me by the 5 Willows, and The Winds by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Great 50's vocal group music, offered here with no liner notes at all. (Having said all of that, I do recommend that you check out the similar Herald issues on Relic: 7059 and 7099 are both various artists discs, plus there are individual discs focusing on the Zodiacs, the Mello-Kings, the Nutmegs, and the Turbans. They've got the same great music with liner notes and group photos as well.) (DH)

14 tracks, 36 min., recommended Disc number one in the two volume Josie overview from Collectables is dominated by four Cadillacs' numbers: Down the Road/ Sympathy/ Wishing Well, and a previously unissued outtake of Woe Is Me. The rest of the disc is made up of somewhat less familiar cuts, including You Are So Beautiful by the 5 Notes, the previously unreleased Hold Me by the Clicks, You Were Waiting for Me by the King Toppers, The Stars Are Out Tonight by the Teardrops, and a great unreleased bluesy number by the Ravens, Ashamed. This is one of my favorites in this series of label-focused reissues. Excellent sound quality, no real notes, and a cover with a facsimile of an original Josie Records label. (DH)

This second entry from the Josie label is again dominated by the Cadillacs, represented here with four numbers: Speedo/ My Girlfriend/ You Are, and a previously unreleased cut by the name of Heart Is So Blind. But the highlights here from my point of view are the previously unreleased You Broke My Heart by the Clicks, Oh My Darling by the Chips, and My Shadow and Me by the Chaperones. It's all good doo-wop. I just wish that Collectables would put all of the more obscure cuts from each label on a single disc, on the reasonable assumption that most vocal group fans already own collections by that label's major artist. Sound is solid, graphics are generic for the series, and there are again no notes at all. (DH)

14 tracks, 37 min., recommended As regular readers of this esteemed catalog will already know, the Sequel label of England has also been reissuing material from Jubilee, including two 25 track, various artist doo-wop collections (NEM CD 736 and 743), a Dominoes Meet the Ravens disc (NEM CD 716), and a complete Four Tunes set (NEM CD 229). And both Collectables and Bear Family have issued either extensive of complete Orioles' collections. With all of that in mind, from a duplicated track point of view, Volume 1 here includes only one track not on any of the above collections: Teenage Paradise by the Volumes. Otherwise available tracks include Lemon Squeezing Daddy and Don't Be Angry by the Sultans; On Chapel Hill, Gimme Gimme Gimme, and Bye Bye Baby Blues by the Ravens; Make Me Thrill Again by the Marylanders; plus I've Lost by the Enchanters and three Orioles cuts. Repeated tracks include Green Eyes and I'll Always Be in Love with You by the Ravens, You Captured My Heart by the Sultans, Baby Let Me Bang Your Box by the Toppers, plus three tracks by the Orioles and two by the Marylanders. Which reminds me, with all of these Jubilee collections now available, why hasn't anyone included one of may favorite Marylanders' cuts, Sittin' by the River? Oh well, another lost musical cause, I suppose. (DH)

18 tracks, 44 min., recommended Another worthwhile entry in the Collectables Spotlight Series, this time focusing on two labels that each did their part in trying to keep the doo-wop sound alive in the early 60's. Among the vocal group gems are the often reissued There's a Moon Out Tonight by the Capris, My Baby by the Perfections, That Day Will Never Come by the Parktowns, Teenager's Life by the Visions, Island of Love by Lee Andrews and the Hearts, Gee by the Moonglows, Love You Madly by the Sherwoods, and I Need You So by the Veltones. Another interesting mix of upbeat and ballad vocal group numbers, with eight songs in stereo, solid sound quality throughout the program, generic cover art, and no notes at all. (DH)

14 tracks, 31 min., recommended Mostly uptempo music from the reissue company known for its lack of liner notes and its generic cover art. This entry in Collectables' spotlight series kicks off, as you might expect, with the featured label's best known number, Church Bells May Ring by the Willows. Other tracks include Pretty Little Girl by the Monarchs, While I Dream by the Tokens featuring a Neil Sedaka lead, Eyes of an Angel by the Legends, Mexico by the Rocketones, and A Dream of Love by the Nutmegs. Too few cuts, but the music's good and the sound quality is fine. (DH)

So, Come Back My Love and Eleven Roses by the Wrens; Three Wishes and That's the Way It Goes by the Harptones; Nature's Creation and Falling for You by the Valentines; I Won't Be the Fool Anymore by the Heartbeats; and I Love You So by the Crows are all on other issues. Only Christmas Prayer by the Valentines, What Can I Tell Her Now by the Bells, Minnie by Rainbows, Plain Old Love and Possessive Love by the Pretenders, and Gee What a Boy by the Joytones are new to CD. This first volume in Collectables' two volume set focusing on the vocal group output of the Roulette label is highlighted by the Heartbeats with Down on My Knees and I Found a Job, the Cleftones doing She's So Fine, the Five Satins performing Ain't Gonna Dance, and Darrell and the Oxfords singing Can't You Tell. A rather short program, but the music's all good. All entries in this series have essentially the same cover art, though the colors and the featured record label do differ. And sound quality is fine, but there are no notes at all. (DH)

14 tracks, 33 min., recommended Tracks that are readily available on other collections include Picture in My Wallet by Darrell and the Oxfords; Rip Van Winkle, A Sunday Kind of Love, Snow White, and Zindy Lou by the Devotions (all on Sequel 715, A Whiter Shade of Doo-Wop); One Day Next Year and Sometimes I Wonder by the Heartbeats (on Collectables' own Heartbeats' boxed set CD 8805); and Rink-A-Dink-A-Doo by the Edsels (on Relic 7050). Less readily available are I'm Not Your Fool Anymore by the Turbans, Trudy by the Cleftones, She Wasn't Meant for Me by the Shells, You Can Count on Me by the Five Satins, and Screamin' Ball by the Duponts. 14 tracks, 38 min., recommended The latest two entries in the Collectables "Spotlight Series" focus on the minimal vocal group output of Sam Phillips' famous Memphis label, Sun Records. Half of the tracks are by the only group to have laid down more than a few cuts for the label, the Prisonaires. Their numbers here include Just Walkin' in the Rain, What'll You Do Next, I Wish, and Baby Please. Among the other featured tracks are an unreleased version of Sitting by My Window by the Five Tinos; two unreleased numbers by the Four Dukes, Angel Dear and Walking Alone, Tears and Wine by Dusty Brooks & his Tones, the gospel number Every Night by the Jones Brothers, and two particularly nice unreleased cuts by a group known as Hunki Dori - Why Don't You Use Your Head and I Want My Baby Back. Sound is up to snuff, and there are, as usual with this series, no notes at all. (DH)

14 tracks, 37 min., recommended This second look at Sun's efforts at the vocal group sound features a half a dozen cuts by the Prisonaires - including There Is Love in You, Don't Say Tomorrow, and Softly and Tenderly - plus Don't Do That, Mambo Baby, Gonna Have to Let You Be, and the released version of Sitting by My Window by the Five Tinos; Baby Doll and Annie by the Four Dukes; and Fool's Hall of Fame by Rudy Richardson & Group. Good music to be sure, but if you already own Bear Family's Prisonaires' disc (BCD 15523 $19.98), you've got close to half of the numbers here and on volume one. And, if you've been buying the Bear Family Sun Singles boxed sets or several of the other miscellaneous Sun reissues, the overlap problem is probably even worse. (DH)

15 tracks, 36 min., recommended This two volume entry in Collectables' Spotlight Series, like most of the earlier entries, presents a solid mix of 50's and early 60's vocal group numbers. Among the highlights in volume one are Tonight I Fell in Love by the Tokens, I Remember by the Harptones, Crazy Love by the Genies, Dry Your Tears by the Inspirations, Dawn Is Almost Here by the Cordials, and Today by the Eternals. There are no liner notes at all. And, as if so often the case with Collectables these days, the program is a bit on the short side, but both the music and the sound quality are above reproach. (DH)

15 tracks, 35 min., recommended Another short stack from Collectables, but again a good one. The program features three late but worthwhile numbers by the Harptones - Laughing on the Outside, What Kind of Fool, and Love Me Completely. Other featured tracks include Crazy Feeling and Just Like the Bluebird by the Genies, Blind Date by the Eternals, It's All in Your Mind by Dean Barlow and Group, Our Love is a Vow by the Mello Harps, Come On by the Distants, and Goodbye by the Inspirations. Sound quality is fine, liner notes, such as they are, consist of ads for the other volumes in the Spotlight Series. (DH)

Exact reissue of Gee LP 702 featuring five groups from George Goldner's Gee, Rama, and Bruce labels circa 1953-56. Most of this material has surfaced on other reissues. Even the album's fluffy and trite sleeve notes are lovingly reproduced for the CD booklet. Hit ticket items include The Cleftones from Queens wailing This Little Girl Of Mine, and Harlem's own Crows with Gee. Sharing the bill are The Wrens from the Bronx pleading with Come Back My Love, Lenox Ave's own Harptones smoozin' on My Memories Of You/ A Sunday Kind Of Love, and Sugar Hill's Valentines with Nature's Creation/ Lilly Maebelle.
