LOUIS ARMSTRONG Universal (France) 533 607-9 The Complete Masters, 1925-1945 ● CD $85.98
One of a series of 13 to 15 CD box sets from Universal in France devoted to providing a comprehensive overview of various major jazz figures. Each set comes in a handsome 5.5" x 7.5 x 2" box (equivalent to 8 CDs for shipping purposes) with seven double CDs housed in sturdy cardboards sleeves accompanied by a 68 page book with notes in English and French and many photos (some in color) along with complete discographical information. Sound quality is superb.
This volume is devoted to the work of one of the most important musicians in the history of jazz - a cornet and trumpet player who has influenced just about every player of the instrument in jazz. From his seminal recordings with his Hot Five and Hot Seven through his big band recordings with his Orchestra we have one classic performance after another. The first 13 tracks features every master take of his recordings made between 1925 and 1945 and the 14th features a selection his earlier work with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, Clarence Williams' Blue Five and others as well accompaniments to blues singers Eva Taylor and Bessie Smith. If you are a serious jazz fan you probably have evrything here - possibly several times over - but if you're new to the music or only have a handful of Armstrong's here's a chance to hear more than 300 tracks of some of the greatest jazz ever recorded.

SIDNEY BECHET Universal (France) 533 616-7 The Complete American Masters, 1931-1953 ● CD $75.98
This volume is devoted to the great clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet. The title on this set is a trifle misleading. The first disc is a selection of sides Bechet played on between 1923 and 1932 - mostly as a member of Clarence Williams' Blue Five. The next 11 CDs present all the masters Bechet was on between 1934 and 1953 recorded in the USA (he made quite a few recordings in Europe in the 1940s which are not included here). The 14th disc features a selection of titles from radio broadcasts and private recordings made between 1939 and 1946.

BIG MACEO JSP JSPCD 4320 Power Piano Player: The Complete Sides, 1941-50 ● CD $22.98
The complete recordings of one of the greatest and most influential blues and boogie piano players including several accompaniments to his regular playing partner Tampa Red and one very obscure side accompanying John Brim.

ARTHUR CONLEY Kent CDKEND 358 I'm LIving Good - The Soul Of Arthur Conley, 1964-1974 ● CD $18.98
Arthur Conley's career as a first-tier soul man was largely overshadowed by the worldwide success of his biggest hit, Sweet Soul Music and the entertaining, but often clichéd, funk and dance tracks that he was obliged to record in his attempts to find a follow-up hit of comparable magnitude. Hidden on the flips of many of those funk workouts and/or spread across three albums were some of the best deep and sweet Southern Soul sides of the late 60s. Although highly collectable they have never been available in once place - until now. 24 tracks including: Take Me (Just As I Am)/ Love Comes And Goes/ Otis Sleep On/ This Love Of Mine/ Ain't Nobody's Fault But Mine/ Keep On Talking, etc.

JIMMY DONLEY Ace CDCHD 1324 In The Key Of Heartbreak - Complete Tear Drop Singles+ ● CD $29.98
This extraordinary double CD set brings together nearly every recording that tragic swamp pop singer Jimmy Donley made in the last two years of his life. All were either produced by or posthumously acquired by the Texas record producer Huey P Meaux, and all are presented here - some in stereo for the first time - from freshly made transfers of the original tapes, still stored in what was once Meaux's studios in Houston. The As and Bs of all of Jimmy's Tear Drop singles are here on Disc One, along with several demos that Meaux overdubbed and released after Donley's death. These singles include Think It Over/ Please Mr Sandman/ Loving Cajun Style/ I'm To Blame and other swamp pop standbys that can still be heard regularly in jukeboxes and on the radio throughout South Louisiana. Disc Two will be a treat for Donley fans - nearly 30 home demos, including songs that Donley never recorded commercially, revivals of Louisiana R&B classics by Cookie and the Cupcakes and Fats Domino and the original versions of several hits that Jimmy wrote for his friend and fan Fats. A few of these have been released before - but the vast majority have not. The booklet features a plethora of label shots and many rare lyric manuscripts, in Jimmy's own handwriting never seen before.

ELLA FITZGERALD Universal (France) 533 610-1 The Complete Masters, 1935-1955 ● CD $75.98
This volume is devoted to the great jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald featuring the complete master takes of all the recordings she made between 1939 and 1955 from her first session in June, 1935 when she was a vocalist with the Chick Webb Orchestra to an August, 1955 session with Toots Camera and His Orchestra. She is heard in the company of all kinds of great jazz musicians as well as vocal collaborations with The Mills Brothers, The Four Keys, The Ink Spots, Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, The Skylarks and others.

STEVE GIBSON & THE REDCAPS Acrobat 3000 It's So Good! ● CD $18.98 $10.98
Two CDs, 43 tracks, recommended
Two CD set with 43 tracks by this fine vocal group recorded between 1943 and 1951 for several different labels. Ballads and jump tunes from this whose founding members were Jimmy Springs (lead tenor), David Patillo (lead tenor), Romaine Brown (baritone & piano), Steve Gibson (bass & guitar) and Doles Dickens (string bass). This line up is featured on the first disc and the music rests firmly in the jive vocal group tradition that made stars of The Cats & the Fiddle and The Three Peppers. Influenced greatly by the Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots, the sound of The Red Caps was infused with a comedic element that carried over to their shows. And while they could turn a ballad -- usually led by Jimmy Springs -- as sweetly as you please, the sillier jive jolts -- usually led by Steve Gibson or Romaine Brown are immensely entertaining. Other notable lead singers featured on the second disc include Earl Plummer and David Patillo and three tracks feature them accompanying vocalist Damita Jo. Includes Don't Fool With Me/ Mama Put Your Britches On/ Just For You/ Boogie Woogie Ball/ Somebody's Lyin'/ Sugar Lips/ Mary Had A Little Jam/ Get Off That Kick/ Monkey & The Baboon/ Jack You're Dead/ I'm Living For You/ Blueberry Hill/ Sidewalk Shuffle/ Boogie Woogie On A Saturday Night, etc. Excellent sound and booklet features brief notes and discographical data. SLIM HARPO Bear Family BCD 17129 Rocks ● CD $24.98
31 tracks, very highly recommended
Fantastic collection of uptempo swamp blues from the great and distinctive singer and harmonica player Slim Harpo. Although he was not a particularly influential figure on the African-American blues scene he was an immense influence on the white blues boom emerging in the 1960s and his songs inspired artists like Canned Heat, Them, The Pretty Things and The Rolling Stones. As early as 1957 Sun rockabilly giant Warren Smith covered Slim's Got Love If You Want It. This collection features 30 of his most rockin' songs - mostly drawn from his recordings for Jay Miller but also including a track from his unissued Imperial session. In addition to including such well known songs as I'm A King Bee/ Wild About You Baby/ Buzz Me Babe/ Bobby Sox Baby and Shake Your Hips, etc. it also includes some of his more obscure songs, many which did not get released until Bruce Bastin started exploring the Jay Miller archives in the 1970s including Wild About You Baby/ That Ain't Your Business/ Hey Little Lee and others including the song Cigarettes which is appearing on CD for the first time. Slim's vocals and harmonica are accompanied by great Jay Miller studio musicians like "Guitar" Gable, Clarence "Jockey" Etienne, Rudolph Richard, Lionel Torrence and others. 30 rockers and one swamp blues ballad - the classic Rainin' In My Heart. Includes 32 page booklet with detailed notes by Louisiana blues expert Jeff Hannusch along with rare photos and full discographical details.

ROY HEAD & THE TRAITS Norton 358 Live It Up! Wild Texas Rock n' Roll, 1958-1962 ● CD $14.98 $11.98
16 tracks, 40 min., highly recommended
The early stuff, recorded in Texas between 1958-62, this album collects both sides of the six TNT 45 rpms and both sides of both Renner singles. Their sound is remarkably consistent and consistently remarkable, considering that the earliest sides were cut when the group was still in high school. And as if that weren't enough, the booklet features an interview with (original Trait) Dan Buie, who reminisces about the wild stage antics of Roy Head, among other topics. A nice release all around. (JC)

BILLIE HOLIDAY Universal (France) 533 614-4 The Complete Masters, 1933-1959 ● CD $75.98

GEORGE JACKSON Kent CDKEND 363 Don't Count Me Out - The Fame Recordings, Vol. 1 ● CD $18.98
As talented as he was prolific - and this is the first of what could end up being as many as three compilations of George's Fame material - he wrote songs for just about every important artist to record at FAME from 1968-72. Recorded at Fame's studios in Muscle Shoals and Memphis, here are his original takes on songs that he penned for Wilson Pickett, Willie Hightower, Candi Staton, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Hughes and more. Most are as good as and frequently are better than the familiar covers and any one could have made him a star of similar stature to his peers, if he'd not chosen to put writing above singing the songs in public. Includes Search Your Heart/ 3-F Blues (Find 'Em, Fool 'Em And Forget 'Em)/ Bite The Hand That Feeds You/ Stuck On Her/ Talking In Your Sleep/ Evidence, etc.
GEORGE JACKSON: 3-F Blues (Find 'Em, Fool 'Em And Forget 'Em)/ Back In Your Arms/ Bite The Hand That Feeds You/ Don't Count Me Out/ Evidence/ Getting The Bills (But No Merchandise)/ Greasy Two By Four/ Greedy Over You/ I Can't Do Without You/ I Can't Leave Your Love Alone/ I Can't Love Without You/ I Want You So Bad/ Let's Make It A Deal/ Let's Stop Hurting Each Other/ Love Without A Future/ Search Your Heart/ She's Rated G/ Statue Of Soul/ Stuck On Her/ Talking In Your Sleep/ The Feeling Is Right/ You Can't Make It No Better/ You're At The Right Table/ You're Gonna Need Me Again

ERNIE K.DOE Charly SNAXCD 634 Here Come The Girls: A History, 1960-1970 ● CD $18.98
Two CDs, 49 tracks, very highly recommended
Another terrific deluxe package of New Orleans R&B from Charly this time devoted to Ernie K.Doe. Although he only had one hit with the great Mother In Law there was much more to Ernie. The first disc and half the second features 39 tracks recorded for Minit, Instant and Sansu recorded between 1959 and 1963 (some originally unissued) produced by Allen Toussaint who plays on the sessions and wrote about half the songs (many of the others were written by Ernie himself). Accompaniment is from such New Orleans greats as e Robert Parker, Lee Allen, Roy Montrell and others. Ernie was an all-round singer/ entertainer who was comfortable singing ballads, dance tunes, swamp pop and 50's style R&B, turning out fine versions in every style. He had an amazing voice and charming New Orleans phrasing that should have garnered him much more success than it did. Other great songs include T'Ain't It The Truth/ Wanted - $10,000 Reward/ A Certain Girl (later covered by Warren Zevon)/ Come On Home/ Get Out Of Ny House/ Stoop Down and others. In 1970, after a hiatus Ernie returned to recording with the album "Here Come The Girls" which comprises the last ten tracks of this set Produced by Allen Toussaint, who also wrote 8 of the tracks, this was a serious attempt to rev up K-Doe's career and update his style with a more contemporary soul feel with occasional funk elements but still distinctivly New Orleans in feel. No cheesy re-makes on this album and in 2007 the title song was used in a U.K. TV ad which resulted in reissue of the album. Many will recognize the great bluesy track Whoever Is Thrilling You (Is Killing Me,) which would be a hit for Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan) a few years later. Other fine sides include Back Street Lover/ I'm Only Human and the lovely soul ballad A LOng Way Back Home. Fine sound and and the handsome packaging in a small hard cover book includes a fully illustrated booklet with informative notes by Bob Fisher. (FS)
ERNIE K.DOE: (I Can't Believe) She Gave It All To Me/ A Certain Girl/ A Long Way Back Home/ A Place We Can Be Free/ Baby, Since I Met You/ Back Street Lover/ Be Sweet/ Beating Like A Tom Tom/ Come On Home/ Easier Said Than Done/ Fly Away With Me/ Get Out Of My House/ Heebie Jeebies/ Hello My Lover/ Here Come The Girls/ Hey, Hey, Hey/ Hotcha Mama/ Hurry Up And Know It/ I Cried My Last Tear/ I Got To Find Somebody/ I Love You The Best/ I'm Only Human/ I'm The Boss/ Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye/ Lawdy Mama/ Let Me Love You (Previously Unissued)/ Lonelyology (For Your Love)/ Loving You/ Make You Love Me/ Mother In Law/ Penny Worth Of Happiness/ Popeye Joe/ Real Man/ Reaping What I Sow/ Rub Dub A Dub/ She's Waiting/ So Good (Previously Unissued)/ Stoop Down/ Sufferin' So/ Tain't It The Truth/ Talkin' ‘Bout This Woman/ Talking Out Of My Head/ Te Ta Te Ta Ta/ The Fight (Grandma And Grandpa)/ There's A Will There's A Way/ Waiting At The Station/ Wanted - $10,000 Reward/ Whoever Is Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)/ You Got To Love Me

LOUISIANA RED Wounded Bird 389 Sings The Blues ● CD $13.98 $7.98
20 tracks, 66 mins, recommended
Between 1965 and 1973 Louisiana Red cut more than 70 sides for Atlantic founder Herb Abramson and this album originally issued on Atco in 1972 features 12 of them. The performances feature Red with small groups including Tommy Tucker/ piano, Leonard Gaskin/ bass, Bill Dicey/ harp and others. Performances are generally excellent though the strong influence of Muddy Waters is readilly apparent. The material is a mix of covers (Rollin' Stone/ You Don't Have To Go/ The Same Thing, etc.) and originals I Am Louisiana Red/ The Story Of Louisiana Red/ Freight Train To Ride, etc.). It's a shame they didn't include some of the other sides from these sessions which have been available in the past but as it stands it's a worthwhile set of down home blues. (FS)

BOB LUMAN Snapper SROLL 844 Red Hot! ● CD $9.98
Fine 28 track collection featuring a selection of recordings made by the excellent vocalist Bob Luman. His earliest sides from 1957 and 1958 are hard driving rockabilly with a band that included guitarist James Burton. In 1959 he moved to Warner Brothers where his sound was softened into a more pop country flavored style resulting his big 1960 hit Let's Think About Living and then he moved into a straight country style. This collection features all these aspects with a selection that includes Red Cadillac And A Black Moustache/ Red Hot/ Your Love/ Svengali/ My Baby Walks All Over Me/ Let's Think About Living/ Make Up Your Mind, Baby/ Meet Mr. Mud/ Jealous Heart/ I Love You So Much It Hurts, etc.

One of a series of 13 to 15 CD box sets from Universal in France devoted to providing a comprehensive overview of various major jazz figures. The first 11 CDs features master takes of all his studio recordings starting with an April, 1941 session as a member of the Jay McShann Orchestra with vocals by Walter Brown to a December, 1954 session with his Quintet just a few months before his early death at the age of 35. THE STANLEY BROTHERS Starday 7000 The Early Starday King Years 1958-1961 ● CD $27.98
4 CD's, 109 tracks, 4 hrs., 33 min., essential
Back in stock at a lower price. This is the one we Stanley Brothers fans have been waiting for. Although the Stanleys had been recording for twelve years and had recorded many classic sides for Columbia and Mercury by 1958, many feel that the recordings for King and Starday represent their finest work. There is no denying the wealth of great performances, including the eerie Rank Strangers and such bluegrass standards as Love Me Darling/ Just Tonight/ How Mountain Girls Can Love/ Clinch Mountain Backstep/ Another Night/ The Memory Of Your Smile and many others. The quality of the material remains high throughout the period, with the Starday sessions remaining more faithful to the traditional set-up of guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and bass. King Records boss Syd Nathan hated bluegrass fiddle; at his insistence the two guitar sound, often featuring the fancy crosspicking of Bill Napier and then George Shuffler, became more prominent. Napier's hot, punchy mandolin is also featured on the sides for Starday and the early King sessions, along with the great Chubby Anthony on fiddle. The inimitable elements of the classic Stanley Bros. sound abound on this collection, from the sorrowful lead vocals and wonderful original songs of brother Carter to the bright banjo and quavering, intense singing of brother Ralph, whose voice epitomizes their timeless quality. Box includes a well researched, informative 20-page booklet and discography by Gary Reid, and the sound is fine, certainly better than on the myriad reissue LPs issued in the 70s. (RP)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Night Train 7015 Swing Time Gospel, Vol. 1 ● CD $13.98 $10.98
21 tracks, 57 mins, recommended
Back in stock. This set is a fine collection of acapella gospel from the vaults of Swingtime and Downbeat, a label not generally thought as a gospel label. Downbeat is responsible for launching the career of the great Soul Stirrers and this disc features their first commercial recordings that Downbeat issued in the mid 40s though they are supposed to have been recorded in 1939. These are truly lovely performances and it's unfortunate that the sound quality on these is not too good. Yes the original 78s are very rare and poor quality pressings but a couple of these were issued on Spirit Feel with superior sound. Still they are magnificent. The rest of the groups are pretty obscure and for the most part relatively pedestrian with the exception of the excellent Nightengale Jubalaires who verge closer to the harder school of gospel singing. The other groups are the Wingman Quartet, Stars Of Harmony and Kansas City Gospel Singers. There is also a bonus track not listed - track 17 is a fine and powerful performance that really builds. I think it might be the Stars Of Harmony but I'm not sure. The (sometime inaccurate) liner notes are very enthusiastic about Rough And Rocky Road by The Stars Of Harmony but it's not included on the disc! (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Numero 35 Boddie Recording Company: Cleveland, Ohio ● CD $42.98
Another amazing production from this adventurous label. A three CD set featuring 57 tracks recorded for the long lived Boddie Recording Company of Cleveland that was the longest lived operation of its kind in Cleveland. The 57 tracks on these three CDs represent the best of the Boddies' in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals. Enclosed inside is a mountain of office-styled ephemera: two massive booklets brimming with detail on the Boddies and their artists; extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos; a complete detailed discography folio; reproduced fliers; and a Boddie greeting card--all rendered with the handcrafted charm that was the Boddie hallmark. Call it a self-contained record industry crammed into one box. Counts as four CDs for shipping purposes.
