MIRIAM MAKEBA Warner/ Gallo 03593-6 Mama Afrika, 1932-2008 ● CD $21.98 $14.98
Very limited quantities at sale price. Two CD retrospective of this great South African singer issued shortly after her death in 2008. The material ranges from her earliest sides in the early 1950s with The Skylarks and Manhattan Brothers through to recordings made in the 21st century though, unfortunately, no dates are given to the recordings and the documentation is pretty generic. It includes songs sung in English and in Zulu and includes a great duet with Nina Simone on Bob Dylan's I Shall Not Be Released sung in English and Zulu. Her big hits The Click Song and Pata Pata are included along with her version of Mbube (aka "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"). Arrangements range from distinctly South African to distinctly Western.

MALICORNE Griffe 191282 Malicorne 4 ● CD $17.98
10 tracks, 41 mins, very highly recommended
Another classic Malicorne album available again at a lower price. For their fourth album the group added a fifth member Oscar Zdrzalik (electric bass & percussion) and started experimenting with synthesizers and other electronic instruments and writing original songs but never lost sight of the traditional music they were playing. The vocal and instrumental arrangements are quite simply breathtaking. This is music to listen to again and again. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Numero 039 Eccentric Soul - The Nickel & Penny Labels ● CD $19.98
24 tracks, 69 mins, highly recommended
It's been a while since the gang at Numero has unleashed one of their obscure American R&B compilations on an unsuspecting world, but here it is and this time the spotlight is on Chicago labels Nickel and Penny. The mastermind behind the labels-and most of these sides-was Chicago DJ Richard Pegue, who acted as writer, arranger and producer. The obscurity of these 60's and 70's recordings is partly due to the fact that they went out of print weeks after being released. These tracks are basically slices of sweet soul that sound pleasant to the ear and are as well crafted as anything else from that time frame. The top artists appear to have been Jerry Townes, the Norvells, and Little Ben & the Cheers, who all impress on their respective songs (Townes' Just Say the Word and Never More; Why Do You Want to Make Me Sad by the Norvells; and Little Ben's Mighty, Mighty Lover and I'm Gonna Get Even With You). Other artists of note include Voices, Halleluiah Chorus, and South Shore Commission. As with all of Numero's compilations, this one is packaged beautifully and contains a booklet that gives the lowdown on Pegue's story. If you're a fan of rare Chicago soul then this is the CD for you. (GMC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS One Day DAY2CD 134 Essential Rockabilly - The Decca Story ● CD $11.98
Two CDs, 50 tracks, highly recommended
Another new budget label from England with a new series featuring two CDs of rockabilly organized on a label basis. This volume features sides recorded for the American Decca label and subsidiaries in the 1950s. Many of the Decca releases had a big, distinctive and dynamic sound due to the friendly confines of Bradley Studios in Nashville and the fantastic session cats led by guitarist Grady Martin. Three of the best known of the rockabilly artists on the labels are Johnny Burnette, Johnny Burnette and Buddy Holly but since these have had their recordings reissued many time there are only one or two tracks by each of them. The rest is devoted to more obscure artists like Gene Maltais, Jimmy & Johnny , The Rockin' Saints, Lou Graham, Charlie Phillips (recorded in Lubbock with Buddy Holly on guitar), Peanuts Wilson (the fabulous Cast Iron Arm), Donny Young, Ronnie Smith, Vernon Claud and others. There are also several country stars trying their hand at rock 'n' roll and generally doing a superb job including Roy Hall, Wayne Raney, The York Brothers, Justin Tubb (the terrific Rock It On Down To My House Baby), Webb Pierce and others. Sound quality is superb and there are brief notes by Nigel Cross. About half these tracks previously appeared on the two volumes of Decca rockabilly in Bear Family's "That'll Flat Git It Series" (15623 & 15733 - $21.98 each) but at this price it's worth getting this for the rest! VARIOUS ARTISTS Smithsonian Folkways 40091 There Is No Eye: Music For Photographs ● CD $15.98 $8.98
23 tracks, 68 min., recommended
The New Lost City Ramblers' John Cohen released a book of photographs ("There Is No Eye") of American roots musicians and conceived it as half of an artistic concept with this album as the other half. The album features music recorded between 1947-2001, including many field recordings by Cohen. The material ranges from Woody Guthrie's Ramblin' Round to Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys' John Henry to Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard's TB Blues to Muddy Waters' I Can't Be Satisfied to the David Amram Quartet's Pull My Daisy. Among the treasures is a previously unreleased (as of the CD's release date of 2001) live recording of Bob Dylan singing Roll On John, cut in 1962 on Cynthia Gooding's radio show on WBAI in New York, and a previously unissued recording of Reverend Gary Davis performing If I Had My Way. Now if you can just get your hands on the book. (JC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Vampisoul 101 Highlife TIme ● CD $25.98
2 CDs, 20 tracks, 1 hour 40 min., highly recommended From the always interesting Vampisoul label comes a collection of Nigerian and Ghanian recordings waxed between the early 1960s and the mid-1970s, documenting the creation and subsequent popularity of that enervating West African form known as highlife. Compilers have avoided including the frequently anthologized selections in favor of lesser-known performers, while keeping an ear on quality. Includes 5 tracks by Rex Lawson And His Rivers Men, 3 by the band Opotopo, and 2 by Dr. Victor Olaiya. Could quibble with the running times of the CDs, but not with the music, especially not with the guitar work on Makojo by Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe or with the joyous Aasem by Stan Plange & The Uhuru Dance Band. More, please. (JC)

DINAH WASHINGTON Legends 025 100 Hits ● CD $19.98
Another of those low priced 5 CD sets from Legends - this time featuring the sublime vocals of Dinah Washington. Dinah was an incredibly versatile singer who was equally conformable singing blues, R&B, jazz, pop and even country. This set is fairly light on her earlier bluesy sides from the 40s in favor of later recordings from the mid 50s through early 60s and while it has just about all her pop hits it doesn't have as many of her R&B hits. Still there's some great music here if you don't mind an overabundance of string arrangements.

GABRIEL & MARIE YACOUB Griffe 191852 Pierre De Grenoble ● CD $17.98
12 tracks, 37 mins, essential
After leaving Alan Stivell's band in 1973 and prior forming the great band Malicorne in 1974, Gabriel Yacoub and his wife Marie put out this album of traditional songs and tunes under their own name on Barclay. This gem is now available again on CD. Joining them are fellow Stivell alumni Dan Ar Bras and Alan Kloatr as well as other fine French musicians. As in Malicorne their approach to traditional songs and tunes was strikingly imaginative, using ancient and contemporary instruments (acoustic and electric guitars, dulcimer, hurdy gurdy, harmonium, psaltery, bagpipes, bouzouki, crumhorn, etc) weaving them together in a complex interplay of sounds but always remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. Gabriel has a rich baritone voice full of emotion that is beautifully complemented by Marie's lovely fragile soprano. A number of tracks feature those spine chilling, almost Gregorian chant sounding, harmony vocals that were to become a trademark of Malicorne's sound. The material is consistently fine with the highlights being the beautiful title song which segues into a wonderful bransle and the powerful Le Prince D'Orange but it's all superb. You owe it to yourself to hear this! (FS)
