VARIOUS ARTISTS Documents 233320 Country & Western - A Ride Through History, 1924-1960 ● CD $139.98
40 CDs, 1000 tracks, highly recommended
Yes, you read right - 1000 country songs for less than 15 cents a song - how can you go wrong? Those crazy box set obsessives at Germany's Documents label are at it again. The title is a little misleading as only the first three CDs cover the 1920s, 30s and 40s - the remaining 37 CDs (925 tracks!) cover the period 1950 through 1960 in approximately chronological order which means you get a good percentage od records that made the top ten country charts in this period including more than 100 songs that reached #1 along with titles that made the lower reaches of the charts and a number of more obscure titles that didn't reach the charts. The complete track listing can be found on our web site but here's a quick sampling of artists - Jimmie Rodgers (7 tracks), Mississippi John Hurt (!), Vernon Dalhart (3 tracks), The Carter Family (3 tracks), Patsy Montana, Roy Acuff (5 tracks), Al Dexter, Spade Cooley, Gene Autry (8 tracks), Hank Williams (28 tracks), Ernest Tubb (21 tracks + duets), Eddy Arnold (40 tracks), Lefty Frizzell (18 tracks), Lanie Walker, Kitty Wells (20 tracks), Ronnie Murray, Red Foley (20 tracks), Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner (7 tracks), Johnny Cash (38 tracks) and many, many, many more. Sound quality is excellent. Each disc comes in own cardboard sleeve and the set comes in a 10 1/2"x 10 1/2" box with 40 page boolet with introductory notes, brief biographies of many of the artists in English and German and a slew of reproductions of album covers, sheet music, etc. in full color. Counts as 15 regular CDs for shipping purposes. (FS)
