Chess 01751 |
From The Motion Picture "Rock, Rock, Rock" |
● CD $9.98 |
15 tracks, 39 min, recommended
This is the 50th anniversary
of an LP that was both the first soundtrack LP for a Rock'n'Roll movie & the
first ever LP for the Chess label. Not technically a soundtrack LP, this
features only 3 of the many bands that were in the flick, but all 3 happened
to be on Chess - Chuck Berry, The Moonglows, & The Flamingos (in one of my
fave periods of their tunes). The original set included the tunes that they
did in the movie as well as other hit singles, so this was actually a
Greatest Hits for the three & includes Roll Over Beethoven/ Maybelline
+ 2 more for Chuck, my two all-time favorite Flamingos tunes The Vow
& I'll Be Home + 1, and 3 from The Moonglows including Sincerely.
The three bonus tracks are tunes by bands that now fall under the Universal
label, The Johnny Burnette Trio - Lonesome Train (On A Lonesome Track),
Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent & Alan
Freed & His Rock'n'Roll Orch which included Big Al Sears, Sam "The Man"
Taylor & Taft Jordan (who's also on the 2 Ella Fitzgerald discs reviewed in
the jazz section). (GM)

Northern Soul - The All Night Party Album |
● CD $12.98 |
2 discs, 30 tracks, very good Another compilation of faves
from the up-tempo Northern Soul sound. This one's a bit different - the
producers got some of their fave singers to do some of their fave tunes, so
these are new versions of tunes done by The Tams, Edwin Starrm Lorraine
Silver, Dean Parrish, Tavares, Tommy Hunt, a version of The Platters, even a
version of Sam & Dave! Includes Agent 00 Soul/ Hey Girl Don't Bother Me/
What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am/ Lost Summer Love/ Heaven Must Be
Missing An Angel/ With This Ring, even a new anthem, Parrish's
Northern Soul Survivor. Points off for phony crowd noise between tunes.
