DISCOGRAPHIES
| THE BLUES DISCOGRAPHY
1943-1970 by
Les Fancourt and Bob McGrath |
● BOOK $100.00 |
640 pages, paperback
The long awaited new discography of
post war blues and rhythm & blues records recorded between 1943 and 1970 is
now at the printer and will be available for shipping by the end of next
week. Based on the groundbreaking "Blues Records, 1943-1966" by Mike Leadbitter & Neil Slaven, originally published in 1967 and subsequently
updated as two volumes published in 1988 and 1995 this new book has been
completely revised by Les Fancourt and an army of researchers and
collectors around the globe. The book is produced and published by Bob
McGrath who also publishes the acclaimed "R&B Indies." This book attempts
to document all recordings made during this period of country blues, down
home blues, city blues, blues shouters and rhythm and blues but not gospel,
doo-wop or soul though some entries will overlap into those genres. In
addition to updating all the previous entries, more than 300 new artists
have been added. Artists are listed alphabetically with session information
listed chronologically including titles recorded, location, session
personnel (where known) and original issue on 78, 45, LP or CD. In addition
there is a cross referenced index of musicians. The performers range from
the well known like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Big Joe Turner and B.B.
King to the utterly obscure like Big John Bouie, Jewell Gilbert, Happy Joe
Lewis and L.C. Steel. The book is nicely laid out in a two column
format on 8.5 x 11" pages and will be an indispensable and utterly
fascinating reference work and will give diehard collectors many new items
to seek out.

| THE GOSPEL DISCOGRAPHY, 1943-1970
by Cedric J. Hayes & Bob Laughton |
● BOOK $100.00 |
658 pages, paperback
Now available from the same folks who
brought us "The R&B Indies" and "The Blues Discography" comes the long
awaited new edition of the discography of black gospel music recorded
between 1943 and 1970. The authors have been working on this for some 45
years along with the aid of researchers throughout the world. An early
version of their discography was published in 1993 as "Gospel Records,
1943-1969." This new edition has been completely revised with hundreds of
new artists added and thousands of new titles. Artists are listed
alphabetically with session information listed chronologically including
titles recorded, location, session personnel (where known) and original
issue on 78, 45, LP or CD. In addition there are several invaluable
indexes - one listing all the songs and who sang them (did you know that
there were 67 different versions of Amazing Grace recorded during
the period covered by this volume?). A cross reference of vocalists - very
useful since group members often moved from one group to another. There's
also a cross reference by label and listings of LPs and CDs. The book is
nicely laid out in a two column format on 8.5 x 11" pages and will be an
indispensable and utterly fascinating reference work and will be of
interest to gospel music lovers, record collectors and researchers. To
expedite shipping the book will be shipped directly from the publisher in

| THE R&B INDIES,
VOLS.1-> 4 by Bob McGrath |
● BOOK $90.00
each volume |
Seven years ago Bob McGrath published “The R&B Indies” - a remarkable piece of research featuring two hefty volumes presenting label listings for more than 4,000 record labels active from the early 40s to the 70s that produced, blues, R&B, doo-wop, gospel and soul music. Since that time a great deal of new information has come to light requiring the release of a completely revised and expanded edition. The work now stretches over four volumes and encompasses nearly 7,000 additional labels for a total of 11,300 labels as well as much new information on labels previously covered. The original volumes covered from the early 40s through the late 60s - this new set extends to 1980 to enable better coverage of soul music.
Volume 1 covers label names beginning with the letters A through D, Volume 2 covers E through L, Volume 3 covers R through R and fourth volume covers the letters S through Z and includes a cross reference of artists to the labels they recorded for.
Each label listing includes catalog, pressing and master numbers plus details of ownership, related labels and dating (where known). Most of the labels also feature a copy of the logo. The book is remarkably thorough and comprehensive and there is an astonishing amount of useful and interesting material presented here that will prove to be an invaluable reference for a long time and complements the already existing artist discographies and the information contained will provide fodder for future artist discographies.
