NATHAN ABSHIRE & THE PINE GROVE BOYS |
Arhoolie 373 |
French Blues |
$12.98 |
28 tracks, 78 mins, essential
An invaluable collection of
recordings by one of the greatest of all cajun singers and accordion
players. Nathan's music was intense and full of a pathos that perhaps
reflected the hardships and tragedies of his own life. Although Nathan
first recorded briefly for Bluebird in 1936 his recording career didn't
really take off until he recorded Pine Grove Blues for O.T. records
in 1949 - a song that has become a cajun standard and was Nathan's theme
song. That song along with 27 more recorded for O.T., Khoury's and Lyric
between 1949 and '56 are featured here. Nathan was accompanied by various
musicians on these sessions including fiddlers Will Kegley and Dewey
Balfa, steel guitarist Atlas Fruge, guitarist Ernest Thibodeaux and
others. A number of the tracks feature lead vocals by other performers
including Roy Broussard, Will Kegley, Dewy Balfa and the remarkable Little
Yvonne Le Blanc who sings the mardi gras flavored Mama Rosin. Many
of the recordings were cut in very primitive studios and the digital
remastering faithfully preserves the raucous sound of those sessions.
Whether playing a blues, a waltz or two step Nathan gave them everything
he had. There is burning heartfelt intensity in this music that is too
rarely heard in the cajun revival of recent years. (FS)

ALPHONSE
"BOIS SEC" ARDOIN |
Arhoolie CD 445 |
With Canray Fontenot - La Musique Creole |
$12.98 |
25 tracks, 69 minutes, highly recommended
Creole music is
the music of the primarily French speaking rural African American
population of Southwestern Louisiania. As such, it represents a point of
evolution between Cajun music and the more heavily blues based style that
became known as zydeco. Alponse Ardoin and Canray Fonterot are the best
known exponents of Creole music and played together for decades until
Fonterot's death in 1995. This disk contains their entire first album from
1966 and a series of backyard recordings made by Chris Strachwitz in 1971
and 1973. The tracks feature Ardoin on accordion and Fonterot on fiddle,
accompanied by triangle and bass, guitar and drums on some tracks.
Sqeezebox and fiddle are equally prominent on these collaborations. The
music itself is distinctive from either Cajun or zydeco. Highly rhythmic,
bluesy and trace like at times, it seems to swirl in the air like smoke.
At other times it is upbeat and energetic, quicking the pulse and setting
toes tapping! The singing is frequently improvised and highly emotional,
mirroring the joys and hardships of country life. Fans who enjoy these
wonderful recordings will also want to check out Canray Fonterot's
Louisiania Hot Sauce - Creole Style, also on Arhoolie. (DP)

CUARTETO MACHIN |
Harlequin 104 |
1934-35 |
$16.98 |
20 tracks, 60 minutes, highly recommended
Fourth volume in
Harlequin's series on this seminal Cuban group that helped popularize the
son, this disk documents the later recordings of the group prior to it's
disbanding in 1935 when it's founder Antonio Machin left for France. While
the previous disk presented an orchestral version of the group, here they
are back to their classic quartet format composed of guitar, tres,
trumpet, and maracas. The songs, sones and boleros, weave
beautiful spells of nostalgia full of longing and emotion that need no
translation. This is a great place to start for those wishing to learn
more of the origins of modern Cuban music. The sound quality is fine,
especially considering the age of the recordings – highly recommended!

$12.98 |
25 tracks, 67 min, essential
Wonderful recordings of
Santiago Jimenez, the don of San Antonio accordionists, and doyen of the
Jimenez family, with sons Flaco & Santiago Jr. both carrying on his
tradition. The 1st 12 tracks were recorded in 1979, with Flaco on bajo
sexto and vocal harmonies, & Juan Viesca on bass (previously Arhoolie LP
3013). Strong in voice and marvelously expressive & soulful on the
accordion, Santiago makes these 7 vocals (including Ay Te Dejo En San
Antonio, later picked up by Los Lobos) & 5 instrumental waltzes,
rancheras & polkas both exciting and haunting. Then follows 13
instrumentals, mostly polkas, cut in 1937-8, recordings that influenced a
whole generation of Norteno accordionists, with its virtuosity and unique
blend of Mexican and European, especially German & Moravian, elements.
More fine music from a master.

Favorites |
$14.98 |
25 tracks, 61 mins, highly recommended
The 1949 movie "The
Third Man" is one of the greatest movies of all time and it featured some
of the most memorable theme music of any movie thanks to director Carol
Reed's inspired decision to use music composed and played on the Austrian
zither by Viennese tavern musician Anton Karas. The movie went on to
deserved acclaim and the theme music became a world wide hit. This
wonderful collection features all the main music from the movie along with
a number of tunes recorded by Karas in the early 50s including two
accompaniments to vocalist Kay Armen. This is a lot of zither music to
listen to at one time but the music has an undeniable charm and if you've
seen the movie the haunting sounds here will conjure up images of the
Viennese sewers and of Orson Welle as Harry Lime's first appearance in a
doorway. If you haven't seen the movie you really should - the recntly
released DVD is superb with great quality and has all kinds of extras
including a shot of Karas playing live. Booklet has lots of fascinating
information about Karas and the movie. (FS)

$16.98 |
20 tracks, 60 min., essential
Recorded at the Kingsway
Hall, London, these tracks represent both sides of 10 Zonophone records
(#1001-1010) and are thought to have sold exclusively in the Gold Coast.
It is not surprising then that these wonderful recordings are quite rare.
The Kumasi Trio, who took their name from the city of Kumasi, the
cultural, commercial, and spiritual center of the Ashanti, were H. E.
Biney, Kwah Kanta , and the "near-legendary" Jacob Sam--these are his
earliest know sides. Most of the time the trio is featured on guitars and
drums or guitars and castanets, but on two songs they perform a cappella,
singing apparently in Fanti. Their sound is remarkable full and hopeful,
with bright, lilting guitar work throughout. Excellent sound quality. (JC)

the excellent accordion of Elias Badeaux and the soaring steel guitar of
Archange Touchet. Other great songs from the 60s include She Didn't

the best and longest lived (since 1937) of those groups and has preserved
that style in the succeeding years. Their nickname, "Los Campeones del

$13.98 |
25 tracks, 71 mins, highly recommended
Max Romeo's 1968
single entendre Wet Dream burst on the scene, so to speak, and made
him famous and infamous, depending on who was asked. The song launched
many others with less than disguised sexuality by Romeo and others, and
yet Max Romeo's early career was more about politics than prurience. Sides
reissued here, recorded between 1967-75, include an early pair cut with
the Emotions (Kenneth Knight, Lloyd Shakespeare): I Don't Want To Let
You Go and Soulful Music. His recordings issued during the 1972
election in support of Michael Manley are represented by a reworking of
Rastafarian tradition Let The Power Fall On I and No Joshua No.
Included are the Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced Public Enemy Number One,
The Coming Of Jah, and Three Blind Mice. A pleasing sample
of Romeo's early work. (JC)

2CD set, 48 tracks, 153 mins, essential
Fantastic
collection featuring some of the greatest early recordings of one of the
architects of reggae - Frederick "Toots" Hibbert and his great vocal
companions Nathanial "Jerry" McCarthy and Henry "Raleigh" Gordon aka The
Maytals. The group drew strongly on American R&B and deep soul and
produced beautifully melodic and memorable music. In spite of the album
title most of the recordings here are from the period 1965 and 1974 when
the group was in its prime and includes some of their most popular songs
including 54-46, Struggle (based on his 12 month prison
sentence on a marijuana possession charge that was never proved), a
gorgeous version of the American civil rights anthem We Shall Overcome,
the song that gave the newly developing music its name Do The Reggay,
Pressure Drop featured in the classic reggae film "The Harder They
Come", Monkey Man (his first international hit), 54-46 Was My

utterly enchanting and hypnotic. In recent years Ali has achieved the
acclaim he so richly deserved. This collection of 16 tracks is selected

Tejano Roots: The Women |
$12.98 |
Marvelous collection of 22 heavenly female duets & trios
recorded in south Texas by Armando Marroquin for the Ideal label. Starting
with Marroquin's wife & her sister, Carmen y Laura in 1945, Ideal recorded
many duetas, realizing how popular the sound of 2 women wailing of the
joys & sorrows of love were, especially in the jukeboxes of the cantinas.
While going against the traditional role assigned Hispanic women, glorious
and gritty singers like the Hermanas Guerrero, Rosita y Laura, Hnas.
Segovia, Las Abajenas, Chelo Silva, and, of course, Lydia Mendoza & her
sisters, overcame this with heartfelt emotions & angelic harmonies. Backed
not only by conjunto accordion greats like Narciso Martinez, Paulino
Bernal, & Tony De La Rosa, but by mariachis, the excellent Beto Villa
orchestra, and innovative combinations of all these styles, Ideal
maximized its appeal to all classes of Tejano society. With a 28 page
booklet chock full of photos, artist profiles & lyrics in Spanish &
English, this a welcome survey of this lovely music. (JM)

The Cuban Danzon - Before There Was Jazz |
$12.98 |
23 tracks, 73 mins, highly recommended
Delightful,
intriguing and important recordings of the first African American music
style to be recorded in depth. The recordings here, mostly recorded in
Havana, cover the period 1906 (a rare 2 minute cylinder) to 1929. The
danzon is a series of dance strains and evolved in the 1870s from the
contradanza, becoming a distinctive creole blen of African rhythms with
melodic elements drawn from the European contredanse. The groups bear some
parallels to the then evolving (but not recorded) New Orleans jass bands
with front lines of cornet, trombone, clarinet and one or more violins.
Rhythm sections could include kettle drums, timbales, guiro, claves or
woodblock. The sound quality on these ancient recordings is astonishing
and the 12 page booklet includes notes on the music, the performers and a
discussion of each tune. (FS)

Boogu Yagga Gal |
$16.98 |
22 tracks, 68 mins, highly recommended
Wonderful reissue
of recordings from the 50s featuring Jamaican mento music. Mento is a
dance style that like much Caribbean music draws on both African and
European influences. It has some similarities to Trinidadian calypso but
is a distinctly Jamaican musical form. The songs, like calypso, deal with
topical events, philosophical observations and, of course, the joys and
tribulations of love. Instrumental accompaniments are by small groups
featuring instrumentation which includes fife, banjo, guitar, maracas,
rumba box (a form of bass thumb piano), violin, bamboo clarinet and more.
There are some wonderful singers here including Count Lasher, Lord Lebby,
the particularly fine E. Bedasse and Lord Power. At times one can hear
hints of the forthcoming ska music which was become popular in the early
60s. Sound quality is generally excellent though some of the original
recordings have distortion which cannot be eliminated. 28 page booklet has
informative notes by Richard Noblett and transcripts of the lyrics. (FS)

JSP 7776 |
Rembetika |
$28.98 |
Four CDs, 89 tracks, approx five hours, essential
This is
one of the reissues of the year. Rembetika is often thought of as the
Greek equivalent of the blues - a creation of the underclass and dealing
with the realities of their life - smoking hash, thieving, jail,
addiction, desire and betrayal sung with incredible soul and feeling. The
music is thought to have originated with Greeks who had to leave Asia
Minor at the beginning of the 20th Century. The earliest form is the Smyrnaic style (after Smyrna in Turkey) where the musicians first played
the style and had a strong Turkish flavor to it. The usual accompaniment
included violin, santouri/ cimbalom (hammered dulcimer), guitar and oud.
The first volume is mostly devoted to recordings in this style and
includes such legendary performers as Marika Papagika (who recorded in the
USA), Achilleas Poulus (who sang in Turkish), the prolific and popular
Andonios Dhiamandidhis (aka "Dalgas"), the sublime female singers Roza
Eskenazi and Rita Abadzi. In the early 30s a new style of rembetica began
to appear in the port city of Piraeus with a less ornamented style of
singing and the extensive use of the bouzouki and its smaller cousin the
baglama. The second disc is devoted to this style featuring sides by the
gruff voiced Markos Vamvakaris - another extremely popular performer who
recorded hundreds of songs as well as Stratos Payioumidzis, Yiorgis Batis
and others.
The third disc is strongly dominated by the guitar though
the bouzouki and other instruments are also featured. It includes five
gorgeous instrumental sides - two of them featuring bouzouki master Jack Halikias, one a rare example of a lute instrumental in rembetika and a
dazzling guitar instrumental from the mysterious K. Kostis. This disc also
features a track by the amazing George Katsoras whose modal singing and
guitarist almost has the feel of a Mississippi hill country blues. In
April, 1936 a right-wing government took power in Greece and censorship
was introduced resulting in the banning of lyrics with an "undesirable"
content as well as "Eastern style" music. The fourth disc features
recordings from this period of censorship and while the lyrics are more
concerned with romance than with dope or crime the performances are still
powerful and moving featuring artists like Rirta Abadzi, Stellakis,
Vassilis TsitsanisYiorgos Kavouras and others. The sound quality is superb
and the only drawback to this set is that only 12 pages were allocated to
the notes and compiler and annotator Charles Howard has done his best to
give an overview of the music, brief biographies of the performers, a
glossary and very brief excerpts or descriptions of the songs. (FS)

!Saoco! Masters Of Afro-Cuban Jazz |
$17.98 |
18 tracks, 69 minutes, highly recommended
The title says
it all! This CD collects eighteen excellent examples of the latin jazz
form, mainly recorded on the 1960's, played by creators of the musical
form like Frank "Machito" Grillo and Israel Lopez "Cachao" as well as
later stars in the form, such as Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria. The
sides from lesser-known performers are equally fine-not a clunker in the
lot. (JV)
