VARIOUS ARTISTS Acrobat 124 Early Soul ● CD $9.98
19 tracks, 48 min, recommended
This set would be worth it if only for the inclusion of one of my fave records, The Halos' only recording Nag "You're a nag, naggitty nag" (turns out the band has future solo artist JR Bailey who went on to write Everybody Plays The Fool!) What this disc does have is tunes from the years '60-64, when R&B transitioned into soul. Most of the artists here were stars at some point but not here. Chuck Jackson would have huge soul hits on Wand, but heard here on his Beltone single, Hula Hula. Esther Phillips also had later hits, as well as earlier as Little Esther; here's an early coupling on Warwick, Ooh Baby. Shirley & Lee were the Sweethearts Of Soul in the 50s. They're here with a tougher remake of Let The Good Times Roll. Wilson Pickett's heard on his recording for Lloyd Price's Double L label with 2 classics, If You Need Me & It's Too Late. Also tracks by Ted Taylor, Maxine Brown, The Bluebelles with Patti Labelle & The Genies. (GM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Boulevard Vintage 1009 Vocal Groups In Harmony ● CD $28.98
4 CDs, 4 hours 33 minutes, 100 tracks, recommended
Covering the period between 1946-53, when the smooth vocal group sound was making the transition to doo-wop, this box set serves as a nice introduction to four influential practitioners. With one foot in the older tradition (e.g. Mills Brothers) and another moving in the direction of jumpin' R&B and doo-wop, the groups (The Ravens, The Orioles, The Dominoes, The Red Caps) here each get a 25-song CD to show their stuff. The Orioles, aside from popularizing the bird group names, pioneered the smooth '40s sound that often crossed over to the pop charts. Led by the vocal magic of Sonny Til, songs here include It's Too Soon To Know, (It's Gonna Be) A Lonely Christmas, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?, Crying In The Chapel, I Need You So, and others. The Raven featured the amazing deep bass of Jimmy Ricks, which found its perfect companion in the tenor of Maithe Marshall on older tunes such as Summertime and Old Man River, as well as on popular new songs such as The Orioles' It's Too Soon To Know. Their Rock Me All Night Long leaves little doubt as to the etymology of the future phrase "rock and roll." Disc 3 belongs to The Dominoes, mostly featuring the sweet-voiced Clyde McPhatter, although the final two cuts (You Can't Keep A Good Man Down and Rags To Riches feature a young Jackie Wilson on lead vocals. Their timeless and timely Sixty Minute Man, released in December of 1950, is here of course, as is Heart To Heart and The Deacon Moves In, both featuring the vocal additions of Little Esther! Disc 4 offers Steve Gibson And The Red Caps, who would be remembered forever even if Blueberry Hill--a massive hit for Fats Domino--were their only contribution to musical history. It wasn't. Packaging includes better than minimal but hardly exhaustive notes, and photos and session info. on each disc sleeve. A nice introduction to the influential pre-doo wop masters and a healthy amount of music for the buck. (JC)

30 tracks, 74 mins, recommended
Another collection on this label featuring 30 minor hits and obscurities - a mix of R&B, doo-wop, rock 'n' roll and some pop including a number of tracks in stereo. Includes Tina Robin, Jan Bradley, The Clovers (their original version of Bossa Nova Baby - covered note for note by Elvis), The Aquatones, Lloyd Simms (the great rocking I Want To Know), The Tarriers (pop folk), The Tops, Eddie Rambeau, The Mello Tones, The Tokens, WindJoe Jones, Marcy Jo, Charles Brown (the bluesman in great form on a cover of Sonny Knight's hit Confidential), Tommy Tucker (the hot Rock And Roll Machine) and others. VARIOUS ARTISTS TPAR 145 The Best Doo-Wops From Tin Pan Alley Records ● CD $17.98
31 tracks recorded for this small New York label in the mid/late 50s. The title is a bit redundant since I think this includes all the doo-wop recorded for that label. The material ranges from the superb R&B sounds of The Melloharps to the truly appalling vocals of bandleader Teacho Wiltshire that explains why he is best known as a bandleader. Also includes sides by The Deans, Randy & Sandy, Pat Riley, Gus Colletti & The Clusters, The Bell Hops and The Blendairs.
THE BELL HOPS: Merchant Street Blues/ Please Don't Say No To Me/ THE BLENDAIRS: My Love Is Just For You/ Repetition/ GUS COLLETTI: At The Rock And Roll Party/ My Darling Wait For Me/ Hold My Hand/ Life Is Sad And Dreary/ Sample Kiss (version 1)/ Sample Kiss (version 2)/ Without Your Love/ THE DEANS: Don't Let Her Cry Tonight/ I'm Gonna Love You/ THE MELLOHARPS: Gone/ I Couldn't Believe/ I Love Only You/ My Bleeding Heart/ What Good Are My Dreams/ RANDY & SANDY: Forever Yours/ My Little Skipper-oo/ PAT RILEY: Get With It/ No Regrets Have I/ The Proper Time/ Without You To Love/ CARMEN TAYLOR: It Takes Two/ TEACHO WILTSHIRE: Are You Willing/ Coffee Break/ Love Your Loved One/ Shut Eye/ Working Overtime
