The U.K. Sue Label - The World Of Guy
Stevens |
● CD $18.98 |
26 tracks, 69 mins, highly recommended For British music
fans getting turned on to blues and R&B in the early 60s the newly formed
Island subsidiary Sue was a Godsend. It was run by disc jockey and R&B fan
Guy Stevens who sought out rare and exciting U.S. blues and R&B singles
and reissued them on the distinctive orange and yellow Sue label for the
British market. This is the first in a series of three albums tracing the
history of the label and some of the great music it made available. Quite
a few of the tracks here have been out before on other compilations but
it's all great stuff and is a real trip down memory lane for Brits like
myself who got their musical education in the 60s. Includes tracks by Inez
& Charlie Foxx, Ike & Tina Turner, Harold Betters, The Daylighters, The
Pleasures, Jimmy McGriff, O.V. Wright & The Keys, The Phil Upchurch Combo,
Bobby Parker, Louisiana Red, The Olympics, Joe Tex, Elmore James and many
more. 24 page booklet has extensive notes on the label and Guy's career
(he died in 1981) plus photos, label shots, posters and other memorabilia.

Black Cats 112 |
It's A Deep Soul Thing, Vol. 2 |
● CD $17.98 |
22 tracks, 76 mins, highly recommended Although some of
the tracks on Black Cats' second volume of rare soul sides from the 60s
and early 70s could be considered as slick uptown soul there are plenty of
fine gospel flavored deep soul sides. Highlights include The Fuller
Brothers (the powerful (I Want Her) By My Side), former Raelette
Mary Ann Fisher (the terrific I Can't Take It), Calvin Leavy, Candi
Staton (For You - a beautiful ballad not on the recent Astralwerks
compilation), J.E. Morgan (the blues flavored Gone For Good), Otis
Clay, Robert Collins & The Apaches, Jean Wells (the gorgeous I Can't
Get Over Losing You) and others. Generally excellent sound and
booklet has brief notes on all the tracks. (FS)

The Roots Of Rock 'n' Roll, 1946-1954 |
● CD $39.98 |
Three CDs, 60 tracks, highly recommended Yes it's another
collection devoted to looking at the music that eventually led to what
became known as rock 'n' roll. Listening to the 60 tracks here it's pretty
clear that the music was in place well before it became a national
phenomenon - it's just that this music was marginalized - R&B for the
African American audience and country for the mostly rural white audience.
Eventually they converged and were accepted by mainstream America -
initially by teenagers. This set is presented chronologically and is
mostly blues and R&B along with some country and includes many songs that
later became standards of rock 'n' roll. Includes sides by Lionel Hampton
& His Orch., Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five, Merle Travis, Wynonie
Harris, Sister Rosetta Tharpe & Marie Knight, Paul Williams, Jimmy Preston
& His Prestonians, Percy Mayfield, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jackie Brenston &

to alaternate the East Coast and West Coast sides. Includes sides by The
Blenders, Mello Moods, Solitaires, Legends, Tremaines, Holidays, The Nic
