Hightone 8148 |
Live 2002 |
● CD $15.98 |
17 tracks, 67 min, recommended The original Blasters back &
loud! Led by the feudin' Alvin brothers, Phil on vocals & rhythm & Dave on
lead (I heard rumors that Dave may be joining Dylan's band!) with original
rhythm section of Jon Bazz & Bill Bateman, with relative newcomer Gene
Taylor on piano - he didn't join the band until after their 2nd LP! Very
solid & rockin', with all the faves from the old days (American Music/
Marie Marie/ Long White Cadillac/ Hollywood Bed/ Trouble Bound. Recorded
live at the House of Blues in L.A. during two 2002 reunion shows. (GM)

| JAMES BURTON |
A&M (UK) 540 553-2 |
The Guitar Sounds Of James Burton |
● CD $13.98 |
Reissue of 1971 solo album by legendary guitarist which
proves once again that great sidemen should rarely give up their day job.
James does some fine playing here but the choice of tunes and arrangements
gives him little chance to shine - includes Polk Salad Annie/ Fire And
Rain/ Johnny B. Goode/ Delta Lady/ Rock & Raunch/ Hi-Heel Sneakers, etc.

| THE DIXIE CUPS |
Varese 66375 |
The Complete Red Bird Recordings |
● CD $13.98 |
18 tracks, 45 min, highly recommended. New Orleans meets the
Brill Building with wonderful results! The New Orleans trio did songs produced
by Leiber & Stoller, written by Barry & Greenwich (& Phil Spector - some of
their original recordings, including the perennial Chapel Of Love,
were originally written for Spector acts), & arranged by Joe Jones & Wardell
Quezerque, who first made his name with the arrangement of I Got You Babe
& later was on the Dr John The Night Tripper LPs! As the name implies, all
the Red Bird tunes are here (also Gee Baby Gee/ Girls Can Tell/ I'm Gonna
Get You Yet). There's also the mono 45 version of Gee The Moon Is
Shining Bright, an alternate take of People Say, & the original
acapella version of Iko Iko, the tune that, when I saw them do it on
Shindig as a kid, turned me into a lifelong New Orleans fan (now if someone
will only reissue their ABC sides so I can get a copy of Two-Way Poc-A-Way!)

| ROY HALL |
TRG 505101 |
Diggin' That Rock-A-Billy Boogie |
● CD $17.98 |
28 Tracks, 75 mins, highly recommended. Available again. Do
you dig that rockabilly boogie? If you do, then this CD is actually
essential to you. Roy Hall pounds his boogie woogie piano to 13 songs
recorded for Decca in 1956. Included is the original version of Whole
Lotta Shakin' Goin' On which was co-written by Hall. The other 15 cuts
are made up recordings for the Strate-8, Hi-Q, Fortune (these are from 1949)
and Bullet labels. Some were made with a group Hall led called the Cohutta
Mt. Boys and feature vocals by members of the group as well as by Hall. A
few of the cuts have a more C&W, Western Swing stlye with a pedal steel or
fiddle thrown in. But the whole thing will get you rockin'. A great release
featuring one of the true characters of rockabilly. (RS)

| BUDDY HOLLY |
BGO BGOCD 564 |
That'll Be The Day/ Remember |
● CD $17.98 |
Reissue of two LPs by the great Buddy Holly. "That'll Be The
Day" is the album Decca issued in 1958 after Buddy & The Crickets hit it big
on Brunswick with "That'll Be The Day" and includes the original Decca
version of that song as well as other early sides, mostly with Nashville
sidemen, including Blue Days, Black Nights/ Rock Around With Ollie Vee/
Ting-A-Ling/ Love Me and others. "Remember" was a 1971 British album
featuring a mixture of material including several by Buddy & The Crickets,
an undubbed version of That Makes It Tough, overdubbed versions of
some of the other "Apartment Tapes", the wonderful Reminiscing with
King Curtis on sax and Jerry "Ivan" Allison doing his idiosyncratic real
Wild Child with superb guitar from Buddy.

Hello, It's Really Me - The Al Roberts Jr
Memorial Album |
● CD $10.98 |
27 tracks, 60 mins, highly recommended
Al Roberts Jr. was an
English one man rockabilly band who released two albums and a couple of EPs
in 1978 and 1979 and then "died" or more likely reverted to his alter ego
Bob Clifford. Roberts generated a really nice groove, played fine guitar and
wrote some very funny and clever songs like Spider In The Bath/ Electric
Chair Rock 'n' Roll (he's going to the chair for killing his manager who
cheated him out of royalties!)/ I'll Be Your Hamburger King ("If
you'll be my ketchup queen")/ Motorway Food/ 2% of 90% of 1% (another
song about managers and royalties - "2% of 90% of 1% of Fuck All")/ He
Ate Too Many Burgers and his classic My Granpappy Don' Smoke No Grass
which has become a standard on Dr. Demento's radio show. I really like this
guy - too bad he had to die! (FS)

Sparkletone 99015 |
Woo-Hoo & Other Classics |
● CD $21.98 |
Everything you could possibly want by this vocal and
instrumental quintet who hit it big in 1959 with the title tune. It includes
their only album in both stereo an mono versions along with some alternate
takes and false starts for a total of 34 tracks.

| DEAN TORRENCE |
Varese 66349 |
Legendary Masked Surfer Unmasked |
● CD $17.98 |
18 tracks, 48 min, recommended First overview of Dean's solo
material. When Jan Barry had his car crash & subsequent coma & rehab, Dean
kept the Jan & Dean name alive with the "Jan & Dean" label material ("Save
For A Rainy Day" LP, etc) & Columbia. Later on there was the legendary
Vegetables 45 done as Laughing Gravy, which has Dean recording over the
original Smile version of that Beach Boys tune. After that, Dean was
playing around with old Jan & Dean tapes with a lot of the original backing
musicians & came up with one of my all time faves, (When Summer Comes)
Gonna Hustle You, which was done over the original tapes for New Girl
In Scholl & put out as The Legendary Masked Surfers. All this is here,
along with stuff done for Radio Shack with Mike Love in the 80s, a new
version of Eleanor with Flo & Eddie, & a brand new version of Barbara
Ann done techno style with The Vertikals. The liner notes have a fine
interview with Dean which you already read if you get Goldmine - however, it
doesn't give you specific info on the tracks contained here! (GM)

Saturday Night On Bop Street |
● CD $17.98 |
30 tracks, 67 mins, highly recommended. Great collection of
50s rockabilly. It opens with Gene Vincent's Bop Street and after
that it's on to mostly obscure artists. Quite a few of these tracks have
been reissued on CD before but some were on no longer available collections
on Chief, Flesh Den, Classic, etc. and the standard here is very high. Among
the tracks that have not been on CD before are Don French's fabulous
Little Blonde Girl, Kenny Baker's Goodbye Little Star and Larry
Trider's Hollyish version of the Fiestas So Fine. There are also
sides by Wayne Walker, Carl McVoy, The Raiders, Sammy Gowans (his great
Rockin' By Myself), The Recalls, Huelyn Duvall, Mel Dorsey, The Jiants,
Curtis Potter and others. Excellent sound quality. (FS)

30 tracks, 66 mins, highly recommended A particularly nice
collection of 50s rockabilly and rock 'n' roll. About half the tracks are on
other CDs (Bear Family, Buffalo Bop, etc) but this is certainly worth it for
the ones that are not and there really isn't a dud here with lots of fiery
guitar work and the occasional pounding pinao or honking sax. Includes Chuck
Dockery, Jack lane, Trery Roberts (fine rocking version of Don Gibson's
Oh Lonesome Me), The Chessmen, Joe South, Dave Edge (Wham Bam - a
country flavored rocker in the vein of George Jones's Who Shot Sam),
Rusty Isabell, Johnny Leggett, Don Agee & The Digets, Roy Hall's Alleycats,
