Rhythm & Blues, Soul & Doo Wop
VARIOUS ARTISTS COLLECTIONS
| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Ace CDCHD 629 | Southern Doo Wop, Vol. 2 - Krooning | ● CD $18.98 |
| 24 tracks, 57 min., highly recommended This is volume two in
Ace's overview of the vocal group output of Nashville's Excello label. It
opens auspiciously with Juke Box Rock and Roll by Johnny Brag & the
Marigolds, then moves on to the real stars of both this compilation and its
predecessor, The King Krooners. Here, as was the case in Volume 1, the
Krooners are featured in seven tracks, this time out including School
Daze, There's Been a Change, Now That She's Gone, and
What Does the Future Hold. Among the other solid selections here are
Comin' Home to You by the Gladiolas, Sloo Foot Soo by the
Seniors, Give Me the Power by the Five Chums, The Magic of You
by the Themes, and You For Me by the Hollyhocks. Once again, a
stellar collection of vocal group tracks from the American South, all
recorded between 1955 and 1960. And Ace's production values, as usual, are
among the highest in the industry. Not one to miss. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | KC CD JAM 01 | Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol. 1 | ● CD $17.98 |
| A truly fascinating album - it's a real shame there is no
documentation. This features 24 rare tracks of vocal group harmony from the
late 50s recorded in Jamaica. Some of the tracks are straight ahead copies
of American doo-wop stylings while others have a more distinctively Jamaican
flavor with that distinctive "blue beat" rhythm making it's presence felt.
Artists include The Jiving Juniors (an important group which featured a
young Derrick Herriot), The Moonlighters, Sir Jablonski and Group, The Blues
Busters, The Charm Kings, Chuck & Dobby and others. Sound quality varies
from track to track but is generally good and the music is consistently
fine. |
|||
| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Kent KENCD 212 | The Arock/ Sylvia Soul Story | ● CD $18.98 |
| 28 tracks, 70 min, recommended. This set spotlights the
fruits of Arock, Serock & Sylvia labels, based in NY & owned by long time
Ellingtonian tenor saxist Big Al Sears. No real big hits here (the only hit
from these labels, Theola Kilgore's The Love Of My Man isn't even
here), but there's plenty of fine early - mid 60s soul. Though the names
aren't big, The Diplomats had a few hits, & The DC Playboys is actually Van
McCoy, who also did production work. Sterling McGee is today better known as
the latter half of Harlem blues duo Adam & Satan! Half the tracks are
excellent demos that were never released, with one of the demo singers being
Marie Knight, who, as Sister Marie had a wonderful duo with Sister Rosetta
Tharpe in the 50s. One of her demos here, Come Tomorrow (just her &
piano - amazing cut!) were later done by her on OKeh & may be best known by
it's cover by Manfred Mann. (GM) |
