BILLY ADAMS Screen Door 0200 Legacy ● CD $14.98
17 tracks, 44 mins, recommended Back in the 50s Kentucky born Billy Adams recorded a handful of excellent and highly collectable rockabilly 45s with his band The Rock-A-Teers. In 1959 he and the band went their separate way and Billy mostly concentrated on country and gospel in the 60s and 70s. In 1997 Billy entered the Sun studios in Memphis and accompanied by an excellent trio re-recorded four of his 50s songs, did twelve new songs he had written and a sterling cover of Fats Domino's I'm Walking. After forty years Billy still has a fine and soulful voice and the band of your musicians do spot on accompaniments with particular nice lead guitar work from James Lott. (FS)

EDDIE COCHRAN Liberty (UK) CDECB 1 The Eddie Cochran Box Set ● CD $59.98
4 CD set, 113 tracks, highly recommended. Utterly beautiful collection available again. 4 CD box set covering all aspects of Eddie's career with 113 tracks. Each disc is titled, with "I'm Ready" (1956) covering Eddie's pre-Liberty sides including the Cochran Bros. & solo Crest sides, and the first of the Liberty recordings, which are continued on "Summertime Blues" (1957), and "Something Else" (1959-60). "Something" also collects some of the instrumentals discovered by Rockstar, with 4th Man Theme\ Chicken Shot Blues, as well as recently found stereo masters of such tunes as Weekend/ Cut Across Shorty. The fourth disc, "Three Steps To Heaven" has 11 tunes from Jan. & Feb. '60 appearances on BBC's Boy Meets Girl TV show with Gene Vincent, and we also find Eddie in the studio working on 5 tunes, incl. Jelly Bean/ Don't Bye Bye Baby Me. The set concludes with 10 tunes Eddie worked on, including the Holly Twins- I Want Elvis for Xmas, Skeets MacDonald- You Ought to See Grandma Rock and songs by Al Casey, Wynn Stewart, the 4 Dots, etc. Sound is great, plus there is a 60 page booklet with a biography loaded with rare pix, and a complete discography and sessionography. If you have an extensive Cochran collection you may have everything here, but the packaging and sound are so fine and it's as complete a set as you could ever want. (GM)

THE FIREBALLS Ace CDCHD 828 The Best Of The Rest ● CD $18.98
30 tracks, mostly drawn from the B-sides of singles and most of them making their first appearance on CD. Includes Jimmy Gilmer's first single from 1959 before he joined The Fireballs.

LONNIE MACK Ace CDCHD 847 Still On The Move ● CD $18.98
26 tracks, 65 mins, highly recommended
This is a revised version of Ace 352 that was issued in 1992 and was more or less a straight reissue of a Trip double album which featured some of Lonnie's Fraternity singles along with previously unissued masters. For this CD Ace have been able to work from the original master tapes for superior sound. They have left off a couple of tracks (which can be found on the other Mack issues on Ace 713 and 807) and have added in ten tracks including a few previously unissued alternate takes. Mack was one of the finest and least self-indulgent guitar heroes - he could burn ferocious lines up and down the neck of his Gibson Flying V, yet he was such a soulful singer/ writer that chops never got in the way of the songs. There are quite a few covers here, often instrumental versions like his rockin' workout on Ray Charles' Sticks & Stones or his soulful rendering of Ben E. King's Stand By Me. Another winner from Lonnie Mack and Ace! (FS)
BEAU DOLLAR & THE COINS: Soul Serenade/ LONNIE MACK: Cry Cry Cry/ Don't Make My Baby Blue/ Dorothy On My Mind/ Florence Of Arabia/ Florence Of Arabia (alternate Take)/ I Found A Love/ I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water/ I've Had It/ Men At Play/ Money (that's What I Want) (alternate Take)/ Oh Boy!/ Oh I Apologise/ Omaha/ One Mint Julep/ Sa-ba-hoola/ Shotgun/ Snow On The Mountain/ Stand By Me/ Sticks And Stones/ The Circus Song Aka A Good Woman's Love/ Tonky Go Go/ When I'm Alone/ Wildwood Flower/ Lonnie On The Move (aka For Kicks Aka Turn On Your Lovelight)

THE SHANGRI-LAS RPM 506 Myrmidons Of Melodrama ● CD $15.98
32 tracks, 79 mins, highly recommended According to the dictionary a myrmidon is an unquestioning follower so I'm not sure I understand the context but it sounds good. The Shangri-Las were one of the top girl groups of the 60s featuring the exciting lead vocals of Mary Weiss, the Spectorish flavored productions of George Shadow Morton and the wonderfil melodramatic stories of teen angst - often from the pens of Morton and Brill Building stalwarts Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. All their hits are here including the classics Leader Of The Pack/ Remember Walking In The Sand/ Give Him A Great Big Kiss/ I Can Never Go Home Anymore/ He Cried and others as well as obscure B-sides, LP tracks and both sides of their first single for Smash in 1963. Several tracks are presented in stereo for the first time and the set ends with four brief radio spots - two advertising Revlon makeup and two with Mary giving tips on gift receiving and dating courtesy! Includes fold out booklet with 4,800 word essay by Mick Patrick along with photos and other memorabilia. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Ace CDCHD 844 Love That Louie ● CD $18.98
A tribute to one of the all time greatest rock 'n' roll songs that has been performed over the years by thousands of artists and recorded by hundreds and even provided the basis for a book by Dave Marsh. Though not the first this is the most authoritative aural survey of the phenomenon featuring, of course, the original 1957 version by Richard Berry (from original mastertape for the first time), songs that may have influenced the composition, Northwest garage groups that first brought it to prominence in the early 60s (Rockin' Robin Roberts & The Wailers, Kingsmen, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Sonics, etc), miscellaneous American and British covers (Otis Redding, Travis Wammack, The Kinks, Sounds Orchestra, etc), songs featuring rewrites of the lyrics (Jack E. Lee & The Squires, The Kingsmen), sequels to the song from Richard Berry & Paul Revere & The Raiders and ends with Toots & The Maytals reggae treatment. Includes 20 page booklet with introduction by Dave Marsh and incredibly detailed notes from Alec Palao with interviews and loads of photos and other visual ephemera.
