Drum 001 |
From The Vaults Of Drum And Elgin Recording
Company |
● CD $18.98 |
26 tracks, 62 mins, highly recommended
Excellent collection
of sides from the late 50s and early 60s recorded by Chance Drum for his
Drum, Elgin and other labels. Most of the tracks are high class doo wop
including several tracks by the excellent Five Chesnuts featuring lead by
former Five Satins vocalist Bill Baker. This group also is featured here
backing Marvin Baskerville, Vicki Lee and Rodney Gallant. There's also fine
vocal group sounds from Anne Watts, Jimmy Mack and Betty Watts accompanied
by The Watts - Mack's I Believe I Love You is a beautiful performance
that is on the cusp between doo-wop and soul. There are also a couple of
fine rockabilly tracks featuring The Cool Notes - one with vocals by Paul
Kepler and one with Peter Concillo. There are also a couple of fine rock 'n'
roll ballads by Ralph Miranda & The Deltoros including a fine stripped down
cover of Elvis's Don't Leave Me Know. There are also a couple of girl
group sides from The Baby Dolls which are the weakest here. Sound quality is
excellent and there are brief notes on the label and artists. (FS)

King New Breed Rhythm & Blues |
● CD $18.98 |
24 tracks, 62 min, highly recommended
If you ain't too hip
'bout that New Breed thing, here's the place to start. These King/Federal
sides from '59-67, though mostly from the early 60s are a kind of middle
ground - too rough to be soul, too smooth to be R&B, though they are more on
the rough side than sweet! There's a few names here sounding a bit poppier
than usual, including Albert King (Had You Told It Like It Was, It
Wouldn't Be Like It Is), Freddy King (Now I've Got A Woman),
Johnny Watson (pre-Guitar) with I Say I Love You, Hannibal (pre-The
Mighty) with My Kinda Girl. One of the biggest hits for the label was
Little Willie John's Fever; here's a few attempts at jumping on that
bandwagon - Pneumonia by Joe Tex, She Made My Blood Run Cold
by Ike Turner, & John himself with I'm Shakin'. My fave here is
You're Welcome To The Club by Lee "Shot" Williams, later a big hit for
Little Milton as Welcome To The Club, & Tiny Topsy with Just A
Little Bit - the same song done by Roscoe Gordon who claimed authorship,
but this was recorded around the same time in a poppier vein with writing
credits to King staff including Syl Johnson! (GM)
BOBBY BYRD: I Found Out/ JAMES DUNCAN: Three Little Pigs/ THE FABULOUS DENOS:
Bad Girl/ THE FIVE ROYALES: Think/ HANNIBAL: My Kinda Girl/ LITTLE WILLIE
JOHN: I'm Shakin'/ MARY JOHNSON: Hard Forgetting Memories/ ALBERT KING: Had
You Told It Like It Was (it Wouldn't Be Like It Is)/ BOBBY KING: Thanks Mr
Postman/ FREDDY KING: Now I've Got A Woman/ Some Other Day, Some Other Time/
THE KING PINS: You're Using Me/ LLOYD NOLAN: I Don't Know About You/ WILLIAM
PATTON: Don't Be So Mean/ MIKE PEDICIN: Burnt Toast And Black Coffee/ THE
PREMIERES: I'm Better Off Now (than I Was Before)/ LULA REED & FREDDY KING:
It's Easy Child/ ROSEMARY: Not Much (do You Baby)/ JOE TEX: Pneumonia/ TINY
TOPSY: Just A Little Bit/ IKE TURNER: She Made My Blood Run Cold/ JOHNNY
WATSON: I Say I Love You/ LEE "SHOT" WILLIAMS: You're Welcome To The Club/
MIKE WILLIAMS: You Don't Want Me Around

Sax Kari - Fumigate Funky Broadway |
● CD $15.98 |
29 tracks, good
A collection of 29 tracks recorded in New
Orleans between 1963 and 1968 under the guidance of the remarkable Sax Kari
- a figure who appears prominently as a musician, producer, songwriter and
more from the late 40s through to the present day. His work is represented
on dozens of labels including important independents as well tiny labels
some of them run by himself. The music here represents the full range of
Kari's eclectic talents from the down home bllues of Polka Dot Slim to the
lounge music of Kari himself with The Codes. We also hear urban blues
(Warren Lee Taylor), funky New Orleans R&B (Chris Kenner), soul (Charles
"Soul" Brown) and more. There's lots of good music here that's not available
elsewhere but I find it hard to recommend this because of the poor sound
quality. Tracks are presumably mastered from worn 45s and the sound is
frequently distorted. I know these records are not that easy to come by but
I think with greater effort to track down better copies and with more care
in remastering it could have been much better. (FS)
