FATS DOMINO Bayou 1007 Fats Domino '65 - The Complete Session ● CD $18.98
20 tracks, recommended. Enjoyable set of 20 songs performed live by Fats in Las Vegas in June 1965. Although his hit days were behind him Fats is in top form accompanied by his all star New Orleans band (Dave Bartholomew, Herb Hardesty, Lee Allen, Clarence Ford, Roy Montrell, etc.) as they storm their way through many of his Imperial hits Blueberry Hill/ Domino Twist/ Whole Lotta Lovin'/ I'm In Love Again/ I'm Ready (particularly hot with great piano by Fats)/ I Want To Walk You Home/ I Want To Walk You Home/ I'm In The Mood For Love/ Oh What A Price/ Walking To New Orleans/ So Long and others. The album title is a little misleading as these recordings are from two different days (June 10th and June 13th). Sound quality is unexceptional but the music is great and really makes you wish you could have been there. Fats made some of the most irresistible music ever! (FS)

FRANK MOTLEY & HIS MOTLEY CREW DC 0400 Honkin' At Midnight ● CD $18.98
30 tracks, 72 mins, highly recommended. Excellent collection of hot R&B and some soul featuring band led by trumpeter Frank Motley and recorded between the early 50s and mid 60s. Apart from singer and pianist Curley Bridges most of the band members are unknowns but if you like solid sax honking, blaring trumpets and hard driving rhythm sections you won't be disappointed. The material is evenly divided between vocals and instrumentals and includes originals and covers. Bridges is a fine vocalist and his sides include a supercharged version of Hound Dog, a soulful cover of Ray Charles' Night Time Is The Right Time, the Louisiana flavored Try Rock 'n' Roll and others. There are also several vocals from the excellent Jackie Shane. Motley had a lengthy and interesting career starting in the 40s and extending into the 70s so it's a shame there are no notes. Still this is a worthwhile and entertaining collection. (FS)

THE OLYMPICS Varese Vintage 66362 The Very Best Of The Olympics ● CD $13.98
17 tracks, 40 mins, recommended. Career retrospective of this fine rockin' R&B novelty group featuring the great raspy lead vocals of Walter Ward. Along the way we hear hits and non-hits from Arvee,Tri-Disc & Mirwood like (Baby) Hully Gully/ Big Boy Pete/ Shimmy Like Kate (this updates of a 1920s pop hit is one of my favorites by them)/ Little Pedro/ Dooley/ Dancin' Holiday/ The Duck and others. It also includes Peanut Butter by The Marathons which used the same backing track as (Baby) Hully Gully and a 1974 incarnation of the group with the soul ballad I'm A Dead Man (Still Walking Around). Knowledgeable booklet notes by Billy Vera. (FS)

BOBBY PARKER Night Train 7107 The Wardell Quezerque Sessions ● CD $16.98

When he wasn't cloning his hit he did some fine R&B and soul song including some nice covers of songs from the repertoire of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard and others. Most of these tracks are making their first ever appearance on CD.

GEORGE PERKINS Night Train 7130 Cryin' In The Streets ● CD $16.98
22 track recorded between 1968 and 1979 by this Louisiana soul singer including his fabulous gospel flavored Crying In The Streets.
