Dynamite 130 |
Dynamite Group Sounds, Vol. 30 |
● CD $17.98 |
26 tracks, highly recommended. Another fine selection in this
outstanding series featuring rare black vocal group harmony from the 50s
and early 60s. With so many compilation out there it's perhaps not too
surprising that a dozen sides are duplicated on other collections though
in general this has one has a superior choice. Among the highlights are
the beautiful Since You Left My World by The Centurians with a tune
very similar to Auld Lang Syne, the delightful tribute to Amazing
Willie Mays by The King Odom Quartet, the unusual This Little Boy
by The Coronets (what is this about?), the rocking Oo-Wha-Cha-Wah
by The Incredible Upsetters with some hot guitar and others from The
Fascinators, Twilighters, Crescents, Sonny Fulton & The Mix Masters,
The Flips, The Hide-A-Ways (a soulful rendition of the standard Can't
Help Loving That Girl Of Mine), The Deltas and others. Good sound and
attractive cover. (FS)

El Toro 100 |
Rockin' With The Rhythm & Blues |
● CD $15.98 |
26 tracks, 68 mins, highly recommended A fine collection of
up tempo R&B from 1949 through 1951 featuring songs with the word
"rock" in the title - five years before Alan Freed
"invented" the term "Rock & Roll." Appropriately
enough it starts with the tune Rock And Roll by La Verne Ray &
Arlene Talley from 1950 and also includes sides by Goree Carter (Rock
Awhile), Wynonie Harris (Rock Mr. Blues), The Treniers (It
Rocks, It Rolls, It Swings), Amos Milburn (Let's Rock Awhile),
Doc Sausage (Sausage Rock - what else?!), Max "Blues"
Bailey (Rockin' The Blues), Laurie Tate (Rock Me Daddy) and
more. Some of the material is readily available elsewhere but there is
enough obscure material thanks to careful selection by compiler Dave Penny
who also provides informative notes. Sound quality is excellent and the
set is nicely packaged with photos, label shots and ads. (FS)

Famous Groove 971050 |
The KRC Story |
● CD $18.98 |
20 tracks, 48 mins, recommended. Fine collection of R&B
recorded in 1957 and 1958 for Lloyd Price's short lived KRC label - most
of their output. 12 of the tracks are by Lloyd himself including his
wonderful Just Because which was licensed to ABC-Paramount and
became a big hit. Though recorded in New York many of his sides have a New
Orleans feel reminiscent of his great early 50s Specialty sides. The other
artists are also excellent - Stella Johnson, vocal group The King Bees,
hot rocker Eddy Seacrist and Little Jimmie Merritt. Booklet has brief
notes, photos, etc. This label didn't issue much but it was all high
quality. After closing down the label Lloyd went on to record for
ABC-Paramount where he had the biggest hit of his career Stagger Lee.

The Onyx Records Story |
● CD $15.98 |
20 tracks, recommended. Fine overview of this New York-based
doo-wop label that lasted only from June 1956 to February 1958. The
label's output was 18 45s with their best groups, The Pearls (with David
Clowney, later better known as Dave "Baby" Cortez) & The
Velours having 5 each, 2 by The Monterreys led by ex-Cricket Dean Barlow
(1 unreleased) & 1 single each by The Impressions (not the Curtis
Mayfield group), The Wanderers, The Marquis, The Chordelles & girl
groups The Joyettes & The Miller Sisters. There was a previous
overview of the label on Relic, but that only had 5 of these groups, with
both sides of the singles by The Impressions & the girl groups being
solely on this issue. Includes such classics as The Velours Can I Come
Over Tonight and The Monterreys Dearest One. (GM)
