THE DINNING SISTERS Jasmine 3551 Back In Country Style ● CD $11.98
26 tracks, very good. 26 songs from, mostly from around 1951, The Dinning Sisters career included recording both pop and country material and although stylistically their performances are only tangential to country they were very popular on the National Barn Dance out of Chicago in the 40s and it must be admitted that their performances of western and country classics do have quite a bit of charm. Songs include Turn Your Radio One/ You'll Be Sorry/ Trouble In Mind/ I'm Sorry Now/ I Only Want A Buddu, Not A Sweetheart/ Oh! Monah/ Ridin' Down The Canyon, etc. Accompaniments are also a mix of country and pop and half the tracks feature the brilliant guitarist George Barnes. (FS)

WAYLON JENNINGS Buddah 99619 Honky Tonk Heroes ● CD $11.98
12 tracks, 33 mins, essential
Reissue of 1973 album which is generally considered one of Waylon's greatest achievements at the dawn of the Outlaw era. After eight years of control by RCA's Nashville machine Waylon finally had a chance to take charge and pick the songs and produce and the result is this acknowledged masterpiece. All but one of the songs was written or co-written by Billy Joe Shaver whose songwriting helped define the genre with songs like Old Five And Dimers (Like Me)/ Willy The Wandering Gyspy And Me/ Omaha/ Black Rose the anthemic Ride Me Down Easy and others. For this reissue two bonus tracks are added - the single version of You Ask Me To with dubbed on harmonica and another Billy Joe Shaver song Slow Rollin' Low from another session.

JAMES KING Rounder 0490 Thirty Years Of Farming ● CD $15.98
13 tracks, 43 mins, highly recommended
Splendid new album by this outstanding and soulful bluegrass vocalist from Virginia. His vocals are exceptional with a powerful and intense delivery that lies somewhere between Carter Stanley and Dave Evans. His band is excellent, both in their spot on instrumental work and spendid harmonies. His material is a mix of new and old bluegrass and country songs from a diverse selection of writers like Fred Eaglesmith, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Carl Story, Buddy Starcher and others. (FS)
