| THOR'S HAMMER |
Big Beat 206 |
From Keflavik ... With Love |
● CD $16.98 |
20 tracks, 53 min, recommended VERY rare beat music from
Iceland by Hljomar (The Chords), better known (if at all) as Thor's
Hammer. This collects 20 of their tunes from 65-67, including their
original Icelandic tunes, stuff in '66 recorded in UK for Parlophone, even
a '67 Columbia session done by their leader in the US with John Simon
producing. Though some of the early material is very Mersey Beat, it's the
later fuzz-guitar laden '66 Freak Beat material that especially shines
through including I Don't Care/ My Life/ Big Beat Country Dance.

Buffalo Bop 55151 |
Skippin' Along |
● CD $18.98 |
| A mixed bag of 30 rock 'n' roll obscurities. Much of it is
relatively pedestrian though there are a few real winners like the Johnson
Brothers' great hard driving cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven,
Glen Glenn's Don't You Love Me, Glen Mann's Truly Yours and
Marlon Grisham's Ain't That A Dilly though this latter one has been
reissued several time before. There are also several real dogs including
the painfully wretched Teen-Age Talk by Vincent Macree.

Buffalo Bop 55012 |
Choo Choo Bop |
● CD $18.98 |
30 tracks, 73 mins, highly recommended
The railroad is an
endless source of musical inspiration in American vernacular music and
this is Buffalo Bop's second compilation of rockabilly and rocking country
songs on the subject (the first is Buffalo Bop 55012 "Hobo Bob")
and is a winner. It opens with R&B singer Lloyd George's rocking down
home blues with harmonica Come On Train and swiftly charges into
rocking hillbilly in Clyde Arnold's Black Smoke & Blue Tears
and continues on with Phil Bo's bluesy Mr. Train. There are a few
big names - Johnny Cash with Hey, Porter and Blue Train,
Bill Haley with a version of Chattanooga Choo Choo and Harold
Jenkins (aka Conway Twitty) with his great early recording Long Black
Train. Norman Sullivan does a great cover of Cash's Folsom Prison
Blues, there are a couple of fine unissued Sun cuts from O.C. Holt and
Warne Perdie and Larry Harvey and Johnny Six do uncanny imitations of Hank
Snow on their cuts. Lots more fine stuff from Ken Patrick, Benny Martin,
Eddie Bond, Tommy Faile, Ray Scott and others and the set ends with actual
train sounds. Excellent sound and booklet has artist photos and label
shots. (FS)

Stomper Time 13 |
Nashville Rock 'n' Roll |
● CD $18.98 |
35 tracks, 78 mins, recommended More excellent sides from
Murray Nash's Do-Ra-Me Records label and it's various affiliated labels
recorded between 1959 and 1969 including several previously unissued
tracks. There are five tracks by the excellent singer/ piano player Mel
Robbins who later went on to fame and frtune as Nashville sideman Hargus
"Pig" Robbins. There are some great instrumentals from Cliff
Nash, The Imps and The Sting Rays as well as fine vocals from Chuck Wiley,
Chuck Howard (two takes of the amusing Out Of Gas), Curtis Hobock
(including a fine cover of Charlie Rich's Lonely Weekends), Little
Willie Brown (fine R&B singer - one of the few black artists to record
for Nash), Fred Carter and others. Fine sound and nice illustrated booklet
with informative notes. (FS)
