| Lost Soul Records has produced over 25 excellent collections
of rare soul. Among these, the 15-cd Lost Soul Oldies focuses on rare
ballads with sweet soul harmonies. Perfect for slow dancing in front of a
fire or as an antidote to too much Christmas music. Many many cuts with
emotion-drenched voices, call and response, group harmonies, falsetto
singing, and tight bands. If you listen to soul or gospel, you'll swear
you know these songs and groups even if you've never heard them -- instant
old favorites. The cuts are mostly dubbed from disk, so there is some low-fi,
but that's easily put up with if you see what these 45's are now selling
for. For sweet soul collectors this is the real deal. Highly recommended.
18 tracks, 52 mins, highly recommended The "rarest love jams"
disk and a great introduction to the series. Mostly love-gone-wrong songs
but with a few celebrations of togetherness. Favorites: the Fuller
Brothers' Stranger at my Door, the Limitations' My Baby, Tony
Drake's Let's Play House, and James Conwell's Second Hand

after ten collections, these compilations would start to weaken but you'd
be wrong. Amazing what you can do with great taste and an even greater
vinyl collection. Two cuts that stood out for me were the Highlighters' Have
a Little Faith and Babylove's Do it for Me --both deep soul
leads with sweet soul harmonies. But don't overlook the Implements' I
Wish it Were Me, the Enchanted Five's Your Love Comes Slower than
Never (my favorite title) and Porgy and the Monarch's Magic Maker,
Music Maker (later recut by the Jive Five with Arlene Smith and the

collection! Most sound like they're from the early-mid 60s, with band
names like Thee Dupremes, The Suenos, The Matadors, titles like My Vows
To You/ There's No Other Girl/ Forgive Me If A Cry. The only cover
here is Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying by The Mumy . I Want

| 18 tracks, 39 mins, recommended Another in Night Train's series devoted to the "Legendary Labels Of Louisiana" - this one features 18 sides recorded for Spinett - a label formed by Frankie Ford and his manager Joe Caronno in 1957 and lasted for two years. Many of the recordings featured various combinations of New Orleans musicians recording out of contract - usually Ford, Huey "Piano" Smith and Mac Rebennac - and were issued under such pseudonyms as The Cheerleaders, Snuffy Smith (their Lumumba is a very bizarre political song) and The Three Stooges. Other artists recorded under their real names including Louis Hayward, Roland Stone (his Preacher's Daughter is a great steal of James Wayne's Junco Partner), high pitched vocalist Stormy, Bobby Lonero and Johnny Meyers. Nothing terribly profound here but a nice bunch of entertaining music with that distinctive New Orleans feel. (FS) |
