The Best Of The Touchet Family & Friends |
● CD $15.98 |
21 tracks, highly recommended Great set of traditional style
Cajun music featuring family group whose origins as a musical group date
back to the 40s. The recordings here were made between 1968 and 2000. All
tracks feature the wonderful and distinctive sound of Arconge
"Tee-Con" Touchet on steel guitar, his brother Willis on fiddle
and sister Eva on guitar. The 11 earlier tracks which are the highlight of
this collection features superb accordion work by Elier Touchet who also
is featured on vocals as are Arconge and Eva. All the songs are tunes are
originals by the family members. There are four tracks from 1995 which are
not quite as strong and feature the less impressive accordion of Nathan
menard, Finally there are six tracks from 2000 which are the weakest here
- most of the group were getting on in age and it show. Still, the earlier
sides are so good that this is a highly recommended title. (FS)

Lamento Borincana (Puerto Rican Lament) |
● CD $21.98 |
Between the two World Wars but especially in the late 1920s
and early 1930s migrants from Puerto Rico domiciled in the USA and those
living in the island produced a succession of exciting Spanish-language
recordings accompanied by fashionable string bands. These units sometimes
included a trumpeter or perhaps a reed player, even a brisk accordionist,
who added to the fulsomeness of the sound. Rooted in the inter-mix of
African-Caribbean and Spanish-European elements this is dazzling music and
Arhoolie/Folklyric's collection attests to its variety and consistency.
Arranged chronologically (although the first disc commences with a 1930s
side) this admirable compilation includes the island's instrumental
tradition alongside the sparkling vocal performances - there are examples
of the Valse, Rumba Samaria the Fox Trot and the Danza from formal as well
as the more exciting musical units. The mix of vocal styles ranges from
the Christmas Aguinaldos to the Jibaro and Plena, as well as the Cuban Son
and ubiquitous Bolero and Decima. Key performers such as Canario, the
Cuarteto Flores, Los Jardineros, or Los Reyes de la Plena are present as
well as lesser know units. The songs also attract the listener, including
the first recorded version of Rafael Hernandez's still favoured Lamento
Borinquano, performed by the ever-popular Canario (1930). Other
topical lyrics deal with migrant experience in New York as well as events
in Puerto Rico itself. The booklet gives background to the music and
contains both Spanish and English translations of the lyrics for the
majority of the sung performances. This is an exemplary and essential
production. (John Cowley)

Beyond Recall-A Record Of Jewish Musical
Life In Nazi Berlin |
● CD $249.98 |
A truly remarkable historical document featuring 11 CDs, a
DVD and a 400 page hardcover book in English and German. After Hitler's
seizure of power in 1933 the National Socialists attempted to eradicate
every vestige of Jewis culture. In spite of almost insurmountable odds the
human spirit was stronger than hatred and despite constant surveillance by
the Gestapo, the members of a Jewish Cultural League (Jüdischer
Kulturbund) in Berlin were able to pursue their artistic activities and
make and distribute records. In this set some of those priceless documents
have been rescued and restored for posterity. Some of the titles recorded
in Berlin were released in Palestine from 1934 to 1936 - forming part of
the early history of Israel's record industry. These records that are
scattered throughout the world for the most part exist only as single
copies or test pressings. The repertoire is wide and includes classical
music, Yiddish comedians, German cabaret, Palestinian folk songs and,
above all, cantorial singing of enormous eloquence. The 11 CDs feature
more than 14 hours of music and the DVD contains a reconstruction of the
sound film "Hebrew Melody," that was thought to be lost,
featuring violinist Andreas Weissberger. The text of the book has been
jointly prepared by the biographer Horst H. J. P. Bergmeier, the historian
Ejal Jakob Eisler and the discographer Rainer E. Lotz, and also contains
an introduction by Rabbi Andreas Nachama, a foreword by Henryk Broder, an
'Introduction to the Jewish Liturgy' by Rabbi David Polnauer as well as an
explanation of sound recording techniques by the sound engineer Robert M.
