Southland 22 |
National Downhome Blues Festival, Vol. 2 |
● CD $13.98 |
22 tracks, 70 mins, recommended After five years, Southland
issues the second of two discs presenting recordings from the National
Downhome Blues Festival held in Atlanta in 1984 originally issued on four
LPs. There are some fine performances from John Jackson, Alabama duo
Albert Macon & Robert Thomas, Robert Junior Lockwood, Piano Red,
Doctor Ross, Booker T. Laury, Son Thomas, Larry Johnson and the remarkable
Hezekiah & The Houserockers who do the big blues hit of the time Down
Home Blues with group featuring harmonica and trombone as lead
instruments! The contributions of Snooky Pryor & Homesick James, Eddie
Kirkland and Henry Townsend are less rewarding due to sloppy guitar work.
Includes booklet with extensive notes by David Evans. (FS)

Still 1156 |
Real Black Rhythm |
● CD $16.98 |
25 tracks, 61 mins, highly recommended Not a new release but
one we haven't had before. This is a great collection of rocking blues,
R&B and black rock and roll with the occasional white artist thrown
into the mix from the 50s and early 60s. Just about every track is a
winner - among the highlights are St. Louis disc jockey, vocalist and
trumpet player Gabriel with a terrific version of the Billy Boy Arnold
songs Don't Stay Out All Night with a hot guitar solo from Ike
Turner and a trumpet solo from Gabriel himself. Sara Lee comes on like an
even wilder version of Wanda Jackson with a great band doing a storming
version of Jim Dandy - too bad it fades out in the middle of a hot
guitar solo. Sheryl Crowley is another fine female vocalist - she is
accompanied by Lorenzo Holden's powerful band on It Ain't To Play With
with some excellent piano work which sounds quite a bit like Amos Milburn.
There are two splendid sides by the 3 Of Us Trio featuring the vocals of
Charles Kelly - Big Sid and It's Love - the latter with a
terrific guitar solo. Lots more great sides from Jerry Bradford & The
Spades, Bobo Jenkins (a very obscure release), Jo Jo Williams, Otis Read,
Georgia Lane, Emmett Hobson & The Rag-Muffins, Carl Simpson, Frank
Floyd (aka Harmonica Frank), Little Cameron, The Commandos, Bob Roubain (a
fine vocal and piano rocker from an unreleased acetate) and more. Good
sound and booklet has some nice label shots and a couple of artist photos.
If you liked the Stompin' series you'll love this. (FS)

Scratch(inst.)/ SHERYL CROWLEY & LORENZO HOLDEN'S ORCH.: It Ain't To

Vestapol DVD 13003 |
Legends Of Country Blues Guitar |
● CD $23.98 |
DVD 17 performances, 58 minutes, color/ black & white,
essential. Now on DVD. Phenomenal collection of rare clips featuring some
of the greatest country bluesmen. Among the highlights are a set of five
performances by Big Bill Broonzy. No real details are give other than they
are from the 50s - although quality is unexceptional and most of the
performances cut off half way, the performances are stunning featuring
some truly outstanding guitar work from Bill. If you think that Bill
turned "folky" by the 50s you are in for a pleasant surprise.
Son House is at his most intense and ferocious on a verison of his classic
Death Letter Blues. Gary Davis is dazzling, both vocally and
instrumentally on the long Children Of Zion, and even Pete Seeger's
attempt at banjo backup on the last few choruses of the song don't
diminish the beauty and excitement of this performance. Robert Pete
Williams, that most idiosyncratic of country bluesmen, is in top form on Mamie.
The most recent performance here is a 1986 TV clip of Henry Townsend doing
Cairo Blues - a song from the repertoire of his St. Louis buddy
Henry Spaulding and shows that Townsend had lost little of his skills
since he first recorded in the 20s. Other performances feature Mance
Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Josh White, Brownie McGhee and more from
House and Davis. Some truly stunning performances. My only quibble is that
there is little detailed information on the origin of these performances,
(the Broonzy is of particular interest) and several of the songs are
mistitled. Still a small price to pay for some real magic. (FS)

Legends Of Country Blues Guitar, Vol. 3 |
● CD $23.98 |
DVD 18 performances, b&w/ color, 60 mins, highly recommended
Now on DVD. A beautiful collection of country blues film clips most of
which have never been shown publicly including a number of
"outtakes" from sessions filmed at the University Of Washington
between 1968 and 1970. If you think "outtakes" means inferior
performances, think again, these are beauties including four songs by
Furry Lewis at the height of his powers, two by John Jackson displaying
some dazzling fingerpicking, one eerie gospel song with slide guitar by
Robert Pete Williams and two delightful performances by Jesse Fuller
accompanying himself on electric 12 string guitar, harmonica, kazoo,
cymbals and home made bass which he called the fotdella. The tape also
includes what I believe is the only film footage of Pink Anderson doing
three fine songs in the Piedmont style, one wonderful song by George &
Ethel McCoy with incredibly mournful vocals and lovely twin guitar work
and a beautiful performance of Oh Glory How Happy I Am by Rev Gary
Davis from a Pete Seeger TV show. The tape is rounded out with three
performances from 1962 and '67 by Josh White which are interesting but
their slickness stand outs in contrast to the earthiness of the other
performers. Includes booklet with notes by Mark Humphrey. (FS)
