27 tracks, 65 minutes, recommended Available again. This disc contains most of the first 2 LP volumes (a few were left off) but adds the Belles classic Melvin (sung to the tune of Gloria ). Don't expect Phil Spector producing the Ronettes here, but you can expect charm aplenty. Hightlights are many but some of the standouts include the super tough pair Whyte Boots - Nightmare and The Girls - Chico's Girl , the mayhem of Worse Record Ever Made by Althea & the Memories (Kim Fowley) and the primal fuzz-fest of Jungle Rock by the Chimes Of Freedom. VARIOUS ARTISTS Romulan UFOX 09 Frolic Diner ● CD $15.98
31 tracks, 73 minutes, recommended Available again. 31 gimmick instrumentals from the 50's and 60's, many owing a huge debt to the Champs big hit Tequila . The Carnations steals the rhythm of Tequila on their tune Scorpion but do add plenty of their own spicy guitar licks. The Instrumentals change the locale from Mexico to China on Chop Suey Rock . Other like Felix & his Guitar - Chili Beans/ Enchilada , the Royaltones - Tacos , Danny Bell & the Bell Hops - Chili With Honey , etc. have no shame about sticking South of the border with their thefts. Others venture further afield like the spooky Contrails - Mummy Walk(Walking Death) , Wes Dakus' flea-bitten howler Dog Food , Ivan Wards' Congo Glide , the Zircons' Frog In The Fog , etc. This stuff is excellent dinner music for the tragically hip. (AE)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Romulan UFOX 018 Frolic Diner, Part 2 ● CD $15.98
30 tracks, 73 minutes, recommended A whole bunch of mediocre instrumental singles along with a few flat vocals that make a wonderful collection. The tunes, which sound like soundtracks from bad movies, have such great titles as Satellite Beep Bop (Leon Evans & His Combo), Shake The Can (Senor Jimenez y Los Taquitos), Fried Eggs (The Intruders). The vocals are started by the classic Delicious by Jim Bakus & Friend & includes the hopelessly fine Shanty Town (Carolyn Lenoir) & Weather Report Love (Nancy Dupont) (GM)

Still more offbeat and sleazy instrumentals from the 50s and early 60s - The Spacemen, Th Monarchs, Doc Bagby, The Blockbusters, Mo Klein & The Sargents (the truly weird Flying Loxbox), Johnny Zorro, The J-Walkers (a rocking version of Hava Nagila which they call Israeli Twist!), The Premieres, The Applejacks, Ritchie & The Squires, The Bonnevilles & others. 19 tracks in all.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Sundazed 11062 The Dimension Dolls ● CD $15.98
20 tracks, 49 min., recommended Reissue of the "Dimension Dolls" LP from 1963 (Dimension DLP 6001), with eight bonus tracks featuring high quality pop music emananting from the fabled Brill Building in New York. The roster of artists remains the same. Little Eva sings her biggest hit, The Locomotion, plus Keep Your Hands Off My Baby/ Up on the Roof, and The Trouble with Boys. The Cookies perform their hit version of Chains, plus On Broadway and Foolish Little Girl. And Carole King, who is featured on several songwriting demos, does Crying in the Rain/ Breaking Up is Hard to Do, and her first hit, It Might As Well Rain Until September. These are some of the best written tunes from the early 60s. Booklet includes informative new notes by Dominic Priore. (FS/ DH)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Teenie Weenie FR 1020 Teen-Age Dreams Vol. 15 ● CD $18.98
30 track collection of obscure teen pop-rock from the 50s and 60s including sides by Stan Cayer, Kenny Price, Roy Victor, Ritchie Ray, Warren Williams, Sinx Mitchell, Rick & The Randells, Dale Vaughan, Howie Butler & The Reflections, Sandy Contella, Rusty Curry, John Gabriel, The Three G's, Lou Jordan, Lon Dobro and many more. Includes 12 page booklet with details on each track in tiny print plus photos and label shots.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Teenager 6084 Let's Go Rocking With The High School Favorites, Vol. 1 ● CD $16.98
Straight reissue of old LP. This one gets off on the right foot with Bob King's great Party Hop , an energetic pop rocker with hot guitar and sax breaks. Got A Whole Lot Of Loving To Do by Barry Martin is more of the same. Jay B. Loyd has a fine, deep voice and effortlessly knocks off a rockin' You're Just My Kind . The Royal Monarchs play a catchy instrumental, Teen Scene , and The Beau-Marks offer up a shufflin' rocker, Clap Your Hands Once Again . I've Got You (originally Lynn 505) by Bobby Doss is a pretty cool RAB tune out for the first time on a compilation. For some reason Bill Doggett's The Hully Gully Twist is thrown in for good measure. Most of the rest falls into the teen malt shop genre but I have to mention the surprising effort by Nino Tempo (sans April) on When You Were Sweet Sixteen, a decent tune spiced up considerably by a burning guitar break. 17 tunes in all. (AE)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Varese 66333 25 Hits Of The British Invasion ● CD $16.98
25 tracks, 70 min, highly recommended Don't pretend this is representative of the mid-60s invasion - most of the hits & big names are not here, & when here often not for what we'd expect. The Dave Clark 5 are heard with a pre-Bits & Pieces tune I Knew It All The Time & the Animals Boom Boom is not their hit but the live Newcastle version. There's a bunch of great hits by the likes of The Zombies, Hollies, Lulu, Pet Clark etc. But what I like is that there's a lot of harder to get tunes I like, such as Hedgehoppers Anonymous - It's Good News Week, Crispian St. Peters - The Pied Piper, The Tornados - Telstar, Unit 4 + 2 ( with songwriter Russ Ballard & future Argent & Kink drummer Bob Henrit)- Concrete & Clay & Long John Baldry's gorgeous Let The Heartaches Begin. Nostalgic liner notes by Ian Whitcomb (who like me has adopted Pasadena as his home town), who's heard with his falsetto classic You Turn Me On. (GM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Varese 66484 25 Rockin' Instrumentals ● CD $16.98
There's no rarities here just a collection of some of the best and most popular instrumentals from the mid 50s through the early 60s - Misirlou/ Bongo Rock/ Raunchy/ Rebel Rouser/ The Happy Organ/ Teen Beat/ Tequila/ Honky Tonk (Parts 1 & 2)/ Bust Out/ Time Is Tight/ Red River Rock/ Wild Weekend/ Guitar Boogie Shuffle/ Torquay, etc. All the original recordings by the original artists. Superb sound and notes by Bill Dahl.
