| ENGLAND | A.L. LLOYD | Fellside 173 | England & Her Traditional Songs | ● CD $16.98 |
| 19 tracks, 52 mins, highly recommended. Fabulous collection
of traditional English songs sung by A.L. Lloyd whose contributions to the
British folk scene are immense. He was a tireless researcher and writer and
provided an inspiration and encouragement to the many young performers who
emerged in the 60s and 70s. The performances here were recorded in 1960 and
issued on an LP and EP on the Collector label. Although the original tapes
have long since disappeared Fellside have done a superb job remastering from
the original vinyl. Lloyd was a distinctive singer - not a pretty voice but
a remarkably effective one. Half the tracks are acapella and the rest
feature the concertina accompaniment of his long time associate Alf Edwards.
If you have listened to much of the British folk revival all these songs
will be familiar to you but this was the first time they were recorded
outside of field recordings of rural singers. Includes The Devil And The
Ploughman/ A Sailor's Life/ Salisbury Plain/ George Collins/ The
Whale-Catchers/ Ye Mar'ners All/ The Grey Cock/ Lovely Joan/ The Gentleman
Soldier/ Broomfield Hill and more. Booklet includes notes on the all
songs based on Lloyd's original liner notes. Glorious! (FS) |
