NEWSLETTER #130 Eddie Cochran -> Gene Vincent |
| EDDIE COCHRAN | Proper Pairs 133 | Forever Rockin' | ● CD $12.98 |
| A two CD set of lesser known Cochran material. The first
disc features songs performed on the British "Boy Meets Girl" TV program in
1960 along with an appearance at the NME Poll Winners Concert where he duets
with Gene Vincent, a 1957 radio interview and a couple of home recordings.
The second disc features 20 of his pre Liberty recordings including tracks
with him accompanying Jerry Capehart, Bob denton and others. |

| DION | Collectables 2797 | New Masters | ● CD $14.98 |
| 18 tracks, 67 mins, highly recommended. Fabulous new album
from from one of New York's finest singers finds him to still be in great
voice - he sings with as much energy and soul as he did almost 50 years ago.
He is accompanied by solid band which strikes a perfect balance between the
simplicity of the past yet sounding up to date. The opening track is a new
original from Dion Behind Susan's Eyes, dedicated to his wife, and is
possibly the highlight here with fine lyrics and a catchy melody line that
brings to mind his earlier recordings. The next 16 tracks are either remakes
of some of his early hits (Ruby Baby/ Teenager In Love/ Where Or When/
Donna The Prima Donna, etc) or covers of rock 'n' roll and R&B hits (Blue
Suede Shoes/ Stand By Me/ Runaway/ Blue Monday, etc) and all sound
really fine and not at all dated. The closing song Heal This Land is
another new composition - this time commenting on the aftermath of Sept 11
in asensitive and thoughtful manner. This CD is a real gem. (FS) |

| PAUL EVANS | Castle CMRCD 715 | Happy Go Lucky Me - The Paul Evans Songbook | ● CD $16.98 |
| 28 tracks, 78 min, recommended If you're like me, you think
Paul Evans, you think of his hits - Seven Little Girls (Sitting In The
Back Seat) (Guaranteed '59), the wacky title tune (Guaranteed '60),
recently used by John Waters over the opening credits of "Pecker", or his
morbid Hello, This Is Joanie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song)
(Spring '78). All are here along with other recordings from RCA, Carlton &
Musicor. However, he’s better represented here as a songwriter, with his
demos of such hits as Roses Are Red (My Love) done for Bobby Vinton,
When for The Kalin Twins, Happiness Is, for the Ray Coniff
Singers & used for years for Kent Cigarettes, but especially for Elvis -
I Gotta Know/ Something Blue and The Next Step Is Love. There's
also a lengthy recorded interview with Paul done in January, 2003. (GM) PAUL EVANS: 60 Minute Man/ Cry Baby Cry (unissued)/ Fool/ Good Good Thing (unissued)/ Happiness Is (unissued)/ Happy Go Lucky Me/ Hello This Is Joannie (the Telephone Answering Machine Song)/ Hushabye Little Guitar/ I Gotta Know (live)/ I Was A Part Of The 50s/ If I Had My Life To Live Over (unissued)/ If There Were No Moon (unissued)/ Interview/ Johnny Will (unissued)/ Midnight Special/ Next Step Is Love (unissued)/ Quiet Desperation (unissued)/ Roses Are Red (my Love)/ Seven Little Girls (sitting In The Back Seat)/ Since I Met You Baby/ Something Blue (unissued)/ Tender Moments (unissued)/ This Pullover/ Twins/ What Do You Know/ When/ Worried Guy (unissued)/ You Won't See Me Anymore (unissued) |

| CARL PERKINS | Sanctuary 81302 | Ol' Blue Suede's Back | ● CD $11.98 |
| 12 tracks, 36 minutes, excellent. Reissue of Jet 856 from
'78.Recorded outside of Memphis at Chip Young's Young 'Un Studio in '77 in
the aftermath of Elvis's death, done with Elvis's producer Felton Jarvis &
many of his backing musicians & singers including The Jordanaires. On the
surface, it looks like just a bunch of 50s covers, but Carl gives many of
them his personal stamp, with the best being some fine versions of Rock
Around The Clock/ That's All Right & Kaw Liga, while some of them
have that overblown late 70s feel (think of live performances on "Saturday
Night Live" with a dozen musicians & even more back-up singers). The
original version of the LP had Carl giving a running narrative on
rock'n'roll & the tunes, which made it to the promo copies only - they're
reinstated here. (GM) |

| ALAN PRICE | Sanctuary 81301 | I Put A Spell On You And Other Great Hits | ● CD $11.98 |
| 24 tracks, 78 min, recommended. Still best known in the
states as the organist on The Animals' classic House Of The Rising Sun
in '64, Price left that band in '65 & has had a solo career since, which has
resulted in UK hits, though one of my faves, Simon Smith & His Dancing
Bear actually made it in the States & is one of the earliest covers of a
Randy Newman song. There's a preponderance of covers of R&B tunes, some of
which don't wear as well today, but I tend to like his original tunes,
including the hit House That Jack Built (not the same as the Aretha
hit) & The Jarrow Song. There's also a bunch of live tracks here from
the 80s as well as a medley of 2 Robert Parker tunes (Barefootin' &
Let's Go Baby (Where The Action Is))& Land of 1000 Dances from
'95 with Zoot Money. (GM) |

| JACK SCOTT | Castle CMEDD 669 | Baby's She's Gone | ● CD $25.98 |
| Two CDs, 50 tracks, 117 mins, highly recommended. I've
always had a great fondness for the early recordings of Jack Scott (no, he's
not related!). With his distinctive sombre baritone voice, catchy and highly
repetetive songs (mostly written by Jack himself), his solid acoustic rhythm
guitar, sturdy backing by his group and vocal support from the appropriately
named Chantones he produced memorable music that really gets under your
skin. With the exception of the five CD box set on Bear Family this is the
best retrospective of his early recordings (1957 to 1964) and features all
his hits with the exception of a couple of Capitol tracks which, presumably,
were unavailable for licensing reasons. It features recordings made for ABC
Paramount, Carlton, Top Rank, Guaranteed and Groove and includes such
classics as Leroy (and an early unissued version called Greaseball)
his intense ballads My True Love, With Your Love and What
In The World's Come Over You (which meant a lot to me when I was a
teenager about a thousand years ago), the pounding gospel Save My Soul,
the incessant Geraldine, the wonderful minor key and very Italian
sounding Bella (Scott's real name is Giovanni Scafone), the great
Groove rocker Wiggle On Out and lots more. A few of the later tracks
are less rewarding with occasional excessive strings and syrupy chorus but
those in the minority. Includes a fold out booklet with informative notes by
Bob Solly, photos and other memorabilia. (FS) JACK SCOTT: Baby Baby/ Baby Marie/ Baby She's Gone/ Bella/ Burning Bridges/ Cool Water/ Cruel World/ Fancy Meeting You Again/ Flakey John/ Found A Woman/ Geraldine/ Go Wild Little Sadie/ Good Deal Lucille/ Goodbye Baby/ Greaseball/ I Need Your Love/ I Never Felt Like This/ I Prayed For An Angel/ I'm Dreaming Of You/ I'm Satisfied With You/ Is There Something On Your Mind/ It Only Happened Yesterday/ It's My Way Of Loving You/ Jingle Bell Slide/ Just A Closer Walk With Thee/ Leroy/ Lonesome Mary/ Midgie/ My King/ My True Love/ No One Will Ever Know/ Oh Little One/ Old Time Religion/ Patsy/ Save My Soul/ So Used To Loving You/ Take My Hand, Precious Lord/ The Gospel Train/ The Way I Walk/ There Comes A Time/ There's Trouble Brewing/ Thou Shalt Not Steal/ True Love Is Blind/ Two Timin' Woman/ What A Wonderful Night Out/ What Am I Living For/ What In The World's Come Over You/ Wiggle On Out/ With Your Love/ You Can Bet Your Bottom Dollar |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Big E 101 | Kustom Made Rock-A-Billy | ● CD $15.98 |
| 20 tracks, highly recommended. Reissue of LP of same name
with four additional tracks for a total of 20. If you ahve allthe rockabilly
collections on Ace, Collector, Buffalo Bop and Bear Family then you probably
have everything here but this is chock full of truly exciting rockabilly
tracks from beginning to end. Among the highlights are Jack Day's Little
Joe which has guitar work and vocals so hot that you might want to keep
a fire extinguisher handy. Benny Joy does an alternate version of his
classic Crash The Party and Haskell May really turns up the heat on
Party Line and the wild and wonderful Tom-Cat Daddy by Arlie
Miller is one of the few tracks here not available on another CD.Other
artists include Little Billy Earl, Johnny Faire, Al Epp & The Pharoahs, Leon
Bowman, Jerry Arnold and more wild men. (FS) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Lenox 1011 | 50's Rockers, Vol. 1 | ● CD $16.98 |
| 16 tracks, 37 minutes, recommended. Available again. Much
needed collection of rock 'n'
roll, many with a novelty slant. While
rockabilly has been mined for almost all it's worth, these oddball offbeat
rockers have hardly been touched except for the "Las Vegas Grind" series and
a few others. It's a shame too because they're fun as all heck and often
great rockers like Carl Simpson's Baby Blues Rock, a tune that starts
off with a nursery rhyme then shifts gears into a rocker. Knock Kneed
Rooster by Hank Moore has some absolutely savage guitar. Big Nick Toc
sounds like a singing foghorn on Jibba Jab . Bob Arlin spins a gnarly
tale about his homeboys in East L.A. Scott Engel sounds like a kid
but his two tunes, The Livin' End & Good For Nothin' , rock
like crazy. Chick Carlton does an interesting number called T.V. Cowboy
. Lots more by Al Calloway, Stan Ross, Delbert Trolinder, etc. Minimal
duplication with other reissues. (AE) BOB ARLIN: East L.A./ Pearl In My Heart/ BIG NICK "TOC": Jibba Jab/ AL CALLOWAY: Uncle John/ CHICK CARLTON: (I Want To Be A) TV Cowboy/ SCOTT ENGEL: Good For Nothin'/ The Livin' End/ BEN HARPER: Sittin' Here Worried/ SONNY KNIGHT: Teenage Party/ LITTLE ANGEL: Help Me Baby/ MARCUS BROTHERS: Little Girl In Pigtails/ HANK MOORE: Knock Kneed Rooster/ STAN ROSS: Please Don't Tease/ CARL SIMPSON: Baby Blues Rock/ DELBERT TROLINDER: So We Walked/ LARRY WHEELER: Be My Baby, Baby/ RUSTY YORK: Frosty |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Lenox 1015 | I'm Gonna Rock | ● CD $16.98 |
| A great collection of mostly country flavored rockabilly and
rockin' country featuring some great raw performances from Rabon, Little
Dickie Chaffin, Billy Adams (the great You Heard Me Knockin'), Fuzzy
Lofton, The Keeleys (rocking country gospel!), Starvin Marvin, Danny Keebler
(a hot version of Matchbox) and others. In among the white country artist are
two black country blues artists - Leroy Dallas with I'm Going Away and Ralph
Willis with I'm Gonna Rock - and the both do, indeed, rock. BILLY ADAMS: You Heard Me Knocking/ DELBERT BARKER: Blue Suede Shoes/ No, I Don't Believe I Will/ LITTLE DICKIE CHAFFIN: Princess Whitefoot/ BOB CRIBBIE: Rockabilly Yodel/ LEROY DALLAS: I'm Going Away/ DANNY KEEBLER: Matchbox/ THE KELLEY'S: The Great Foggy Mountain/ FUZZY LOFTON: Bounce Baby, Bounce/ RICK RICKELS: I'm Gone/ You Gonna Go Away/ RABON SANDERS: You Tore Your Playhouse Down/ ORDEN SEXTON: Rock-A-Way/ STARVIN MARVIN: Gamblin' Man/ LARRY THORNTON: Honky Tonk Ties/ RALPH WILLIS: I'm Gonna Rock |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Rockstar 022 | Rock 'n Roll Radio, Australia 1957 | ● CD $19.98 |
| 10 music tracks, 20 talking tracks, 56 mins, highly
recommended. Two live radio shows from 1957 featuring American artists
touring Australia and sponsored by the Australian Ampol Oil Company. The
shows include performances by Bill Haley & The Comets, The Platters, Fredde
Bell & The Bellboys, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps, Little Richard & His Band
and Eddie Cochran (accompanied by Little Richard's Band and doing Whole
Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - a song he never recorded commercially). There
are also lots of commercials for Ampol and compere Jack Davey interviews a
number of the artists and, to my ears, sounds incredibly patronizing though
even he seems at a loss for words when Little Richard tells him and the
audience that after this tour he is going to quit show business to serve the
Lord. Although none of the performances themselves are particularly
outstanding this is a rare chance to hear these artists live at the pinnacle
of their careers and the set comes with a wonderful 16 page booklet with
extensive notes by Adam Komorowski and loads of great photos from the tours.

|||
| GENE VINCENT | Magnum Force CDMF 108 | Rebel Heart, Vol. 8 | ● CD $18.98 |
| 27 tracks, fans only The latest in this series devoted to
rare and unissued Gene Vincent material is for the most devoted Vincent-O-Philes
only. 11 of the tracks don't even feature Vincent including eight tracks by
rather ordinary country group The Phelps Brothers which happened to feature
guitarist Cliff Gallup before he joined Gene - but don't expect any hot
guitar - there is none. The actual Vincent material includes 8 tracks
recorded live in England in 1969 - good performances but sound quality
borders on the unlistenable. There's a 1970 interview, an overdubbed version
of a radio broadcast, a previous unissued version of the horrible
Spaceship To Mars plus other odds and ends. If you're a real enthusiast
none of this will bother you - he was a truly great artist and even lesser
material is of some interest, but for the casual fan you might be better off
with other issues. (FS) |
