Carl's Blues |
● CD $12.98 |
Excellent hard bop session, reissued from late 50's
Contemporary Records holdings. Besides the exemplary playing of rock-solid
bassist Counce, the expansive Coltrane-esque tone of Harold Land and Carl
Perkins' legendary piano work, its a treat to hear the cohesive sound of
this steady working Los Angeles group running down their nightly
repertoire in a hi-fi studio setting. A varied and exciting program of
seven cuts - recommended. (MB)

| HANK CRAWFORD |
Atlantic 82364 |
After Hours |
● CD $11.98 |
Hank Crawford, pianist and sax player with Ray Charles,
leads a variety of units through deep blues, soul ballads and some rather
turgid R&B. Recorded in '65 and '66, this material sounds dated.
Crawford's sax playing is soulful, yet oddly confined. His piano attack is
Charles-influenced, especially in the breaks and comping tempi, but again
something is missing. Junction/ Who Can I Turn To/ Makin' Whoopee
get off, but this version of Next Time You See Me is less alive
than the Dead's. PL)
