Cables' Vision |
● CD $12.98 |
Somewhat erratic late-'70's effort by pianist George Cables.
Although it features heavyweights such as Freddie Hubbard, Ernie Watts and
Bobby Hutcherson, this disc veers dangerously close to "lite jazz" - picking
up a static, dated quality on the two tunes burdened with electric piano.
Luckily, Cables is a fine acoustic pianist and proves it on the other four
cuts. Hutcherson's vibe fills are beautifully understated and Hubbard's
trumpet tour de force Byrdlike is the record's high point, an uptempo
post-bop romp which offers joyously strong solos all around. (PL)

20 tracks, 60 min, essential
You may have noticed that most
titles in this series start in the 40s & this one starts in 1930. The first
Black music chart, "The Harlem Hit Parade" started Oct '42. The first cuts
here actually crossed over and were in the Pop Top charts. In fact, due to
Cab's long Cotton Club residency, the first dozen are from '30-34. And most
of these we still know today, Minnie The Moocher/ St. Louis Blues/ St.
James Infirmary/ Kickin' The Gong Around/ Between The Devil & The Deep Blue
Sea/ (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You/ Moon Glow, etc.
After that, the hits were few & far between, but there were still some Pop
hitslike The Jumpin' Jive, and by the end, doing covers of The
Honeydripper & Shotgun Boogie. (GM)
CAB CALLOWAY: (Hep! Hep!) The Jumpin Jive/ Between the

Are You Hep To The Jive? |
● CD $9.98 |
22 tracks, 65 mins., recommended
This is a great set of
wartime zoot-suit jive from 1939-47, when Calloway was the defining force in
good-time dance music. Outstanding liner notes capture the excitement and
high-voltage humor of this unique band. The only thing omitted is credits
for the band members. Half the tunes are Calloway's originals. Immense fun
is obviously had by the whole band who regularly sing and talk back to Cab
in true hep-cat fashion. You get definitive versions of the requisite hits
like Hey Now, Everybody Eats, and Minnie the Moocher,
which have appeared often enough on other compilations. But you also get
three previously unreleased sides including Don't Falter at the Altar
from 1947. Truly fine masters were used for this CD. Crank it up and you can
close your eyes and dance at the Cotton Club. (DC)

25 tracks, 75 min, highly recommended
As opposed to the
other jazz greats in this series, Cabbell seems to have the fewest existing
alternate takes, as they're all on this vol! Starting with '30-32 Brunswick
sessions including Is That Religion?, which you might remember as the
theme to Andy's Gang - "I got shoes, you got shoes, all God's chillun got
shoes". Then there's 33-34 Victor sides including Minnie The Moocher
& Jitter Bug, '38 Vocalion sides, '40-41 Okeh sides (A Chicken
Ain't Nohin' But A Bird/ Who's Yahoodi) & finally V-Disc sessions from
'43-44 (Diga Diga Doo/ Cruisin' With Cab). Musicians include his
wonderful trumpeters Lamarr Wright, Shad Collins & Jonah Jones, + Foots
Thomas, DePriest Wheeler, Ben Webster, & from '39-40 Dizzy Gillespie! (GM)

Bill Carlsen |
● CD $15.98 |
23 tracks, 63 min, recommended
One of the finest labels ever
to reissue & rescue old jazz is back for it's 2nd set of releases, starting
off with very obscure hot dance. Legendary blues label Paramount had a jazz
subsidiary Broadway, which is where most of these recording originate.
Carlsen was a Milwaukee based reed player (cl, as, ts) who directed the
house band for a restaurant called The Wisconsin Roof. The band, known as
The Wisconsin Roof Orch of Devine's Wisconsin Roof Orch, as big in the
mid-west, especially Chicago, but never further than that. All of the band's
recordings, done under both names from '26-29 are heard here, all for
Broadway except an alternate take of Tiger Rag put out by EBW, & a
never issued test pressing of Wherever You Go, Whatever You Do. By
'29, Carlsen was top named (Bill Carlsen & His Orch) for these 4 '29-31
sides showing more jazz, including Milenburg Joys & Clarinet
Marmalade. These are remarkably clean sounding (mastering is, of course,
by The Master - John RT Davies), considering that Paramount pressings were
notoriously poor. (GM)

Stardust Melody |
● CD $16.98 |
21 tracks, 67 min, essential
The good thing about when a
biography comes out, the artists' material get reissued & re-evaluated. With
Stardust Melody: The Life & Times Of Hoagy Carmichael now out, the
newly revived Bluebird label gave its author, Richard Sudhalter, the
go-ahead to do a CD. He selected the tunes & wrote the liner notes, which
gives it the mark of a well-done CD, not something a studio hack slapped
together. The tunes here mainly feature the composer playing the earliest
versions of his greatest work, starting out with a gorgeous solo piano
version of Stardust from '33, then going into 2 never-before heard
Hoagy Carmichael Orch sides from '29, doing Rockin' Chair, with
Hoagland on vocals, & March Of The Hoodlums. Rockin' Chair is
also heard on 2 other recordings, one by Mildred Bailey from '32 that was
such a big hit that she became known as The Rockin' Chair Lady, & again by
the duo who are probably best known for it, Louis Armstrong & Jack
Teagarden, heard here from a '47 All-Stars session. Bailey is also heard on
a '31 version of Georgia On My Mind - in fact there are a few tunes
here not to feature Hoagy, most notably Earl Hines' '42 version of
Skylark, Hot Lips Page doing Small Fry from '38, & 2 '39
recordings by Ethel Waters - Old Man Harlem & Bread And Gravy.

Where? - With Eric Dolphy and Mal Waldron |
● CD $12.98 |
Reissue of the bassist's first album as a leader, from 1961,
would be worth the price of admission just for the playing of Eric Dolphy
(on his arsenal of alto sax, bass clarinet and flute). On many of the
selections Carter plays cello, as he did to great effect on Dolphy's classic
Out There (ORIG 023), and leaves the bassics to George Duvivier. Mal
Waldron lends his dark and sparse touch to the piano and Charlie Persip mans
the drums. An engaging and unique item, not only for the unusual
instrumentation but also for the 2 Randy Weston tunes, Where? and
Saucer Eyes.

5 tracks, 38 min., good
A pleasant, though very much a
studio, disc featuring Carter (bass), Chet Baker (trumpet) and Kenny Barron
(piano). Several cuts highlight Carter's interest in Latin rhythms and
feature the talents of Brazilian musicians Amaury Tristao (guitar) and the
estimable Nana Vasconcellos (percussion). The samba-shuffle Ah Rio is
probably the best of this bunch. Yet it's the straightahead cuts which pique
my interest, mostly because Baker and Barron - perhaps feeling more at home
- play with more assurance on them. Check out Chet's wonderfully melancholic
reading of Yours Truly. A bit heavy on the overdubbed piano solos and
multitracked trumpet parts for my tastes, this CD's a worthwhile addition
nontheless. (PL)
