SIDNEY BECHET Good Time Jazz 12064 Up A Lazy River ● CD $15.98
Recommended Expanded issue of the 2 LP set "In Memoriam" (Riverside 138/139). The majority of the sides here are from studio sessions that can truly be called All-star, 1 session from '40 & 2 from '49. The 1st is under the name Bechet-Spanier Big 4 with the soprano master doubling on clarinet & joined by Muggsy Spanier (cornet), Carmen Mastern (g) & Duke Ellington's long-time bassist Wellman Braud. Bechet's Circle 7 features such names as Buster Bailey, Walter Page & James P Johnson. The final session has Bechet with his best-known pupil - Bob Wilber's Jazz Band, including Dick Wellstood & Pops Foster. To round out the set are a 2 Bechet appearances on the "This Is Jazz" radio show in '47, 2 tunes with a septet featuring an all-star rhythm section of Johnson, Foster, Danny Baker & baby Dodds which were not on the original LPs, & 2 tunes with the previous rhythm section & Spanier, George Brunnis & Albert Nicholas. SIDNEY BECHET RCA Bluebird 6590 The Legendary Sidney Bechet ● CD $12.98
Twenty selections from the late 30's/ early 40's, plus two from 1932, all of which present Bechet at the height of his powers as an emotionally-charged virtuoso soloist. Although some of the trad jazz groupings aren't particularly compelling, Sid is always thrilling and many of his cohorts (Tommy Ladnier, Sidney DeParis, Earl Hines, Sid Catlett et.al.) put in superior performances, making this disc enjoyable throughout its 1 hour and 5 minute length. The re-processed sound is miraculous from the technological standpoint, well-defined and noiseless, but suffers from shrill high-end distortion that is only made worse by digital reproduction. BIX BEIDERBECKE Columbia CK 46175 Bix Beiderbecke, Vol. 2 - At The Jazz Band Ball ● CD $12.98
The second volume of Columbia's Bix on CD series finds our hero (teamed with Frank Trumbauer) making the rounds of the record companies and casually knocking off some of the hottest jazz records of all time. All of the known takes of the Chicago Loopers session are here, released on Pathé, as well as the first sides he did with members of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra. There are also 3 tunes from a recently discovered session with Lou Raderman & His Pelham Heath Inn Orch., originally released on Harmony 78's in 1928. The sound quality on these is noticeably inferior to the other 20 cuts but it's always nice to hear Bix in another context. Of course there are more jazz greats on these tunes than you can shake a cornet at, with one delightful solo after another. Three Blind Mice/ Clorinda/ I'm More Than Satisfied (2 takes each), Jazz Me Blues/ Sugar/ Jubilee , etc. (AE)

CHU BERRY Jazz Archives 157382 Berry's Story ● CD $11.98
Tenor saxophonist Leon "Chu" Berry featured in various settings between 1936-39. Includes sessions with Gene Krupa, Wingy Manone, Lionel Hampton, and several dates as both frontman and co-leader with trumpeter Roy Eldridge. The disc's opener, Krupa's interpretation of I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music, offers tenor-powered ensemble riffing and Benny Goodman's hot upper-register clarinet work. Body and Soul/ Sittin' In/ Stardust and 46 West 52 are all from a November 1938 date with Eldridge's "Little Jazz" Ensemble and showcase the soft, round sound of Berry's tenor. Chu swings masterfully, weaving in stellar interplay with Eldridge. The Hampton material feature's Berry's active, dextrous improvising. Uneven sound quality but some enjoyable music. (PL)

ANDY BEY Evidence 22162 Ballads, Blues & Bey ● CD $14.98
10 Tracks, 70 min, recommended I've been playing this one non-stop. A fantastic return to the studio by vocalist/pianist Andy Bey who was last heard in the '70's with Horace Silver, Max Roach and Gary Bartz. Here, Bey takes on the standards, with a slight emphasis on Ellington and Gershwin. His vocal style is best described as Luther Vandross-meets-Carmen McRae (who, incidentally, is one of the artist's idols). All of Bey's renditions are sultry and heart-felt, but also very intelligently done. And he is a fantastic keyboardist. For all of you who like listening to Nat "King" Cole and Billie Holiday, this disc is one of the best of the new jazz releases. 'Nuff said. (PL)
