Volume 2 - Band Vocalist |
● CD $13.98 |
22 Tracks, 73 min. good Bailey had a pleasing voice and a
swinging sense of both rhythm and phrasing which allowed her to take on a
great emotional range of songs. She could sound sexy, contrite or virtuous
and could certainly sing the blues (check her out fronting Benny goodman
on the two takes of Junk Man). Bailey is also heard here with Paul
Whiteman (her brother was in his vocal trio) and the Dorsey Brothers.
Highlights include Love Me Tonight/ I'll Never Be The Same/ Snowball/
Rocking Chair/ Heatwave. My favorite, however, is Give Me Liberty
Or Give Me Love. Interesting. (PL)

| PEARL BAILEY |
Columbia CK 47082 |
16 Most Requested Songs |
● CD $11.98 |
16 sides recorded for Columbia in 1945, backed by small
combos. Bailey's sharp vocals cut like a knife through these mostly
uptempo numbers - St. Louis Blues/ Who/ Don't Ever Leave Me/ Ain't She
Sweet/ Frankie And Johnny. But the beauty of her voice is evident in
the ballads Tired/ Personality/ Here You Come With Your Love. Some
hot horn solos by Billy Butterfield. A nice collection, 48 minutes of
top-notch vocal jazz. (PG)

2 Discs, 11 tracks, 1 hour 56 min, recommended A re-release
of Paddle Wheel 6270 and 6281, this excellent 2-CD set was recorded live
in Japan in June 1987. As famous for his reputation and looks as he was
for his playing, the trumpeter is heard here fronting a quartet consisting
of Harold Danko (piano) Hein Van Der Geyn (bass) and John Engels (drums).
Some real fine stuff shows up on both discs. Baker's trumpet playing is
pleasing throughout, deft, sure-footed and deeply emotive. Running through
his ballads and blues, Chet leads the band in impressive versions of Stella
By Starlight, Elvis Costello's Almost Blue, My Funny
Valentine, Seven Steps To Heaven and Broken Wing. Danko
shines on For Minors Only and check out Van Der Geyn on Portrait
in Black and White! Though he would be dead within a year, Baker's
horn was strong and self-assured at this show. Perfect late-night jazz.

| CHET BAKER |
RCA 68590 |
The Italian Sessions |
● CD $13.98 |
The Chet Baker revival continues with the issue of this fine
LP. In the wake of Chet's tragic death and renewed interest in his life
and work due to Bruce Weber's acclaimed film "Let's Get Lost,"
there's no doubt we haven't seen the end of it either. This album should
be one of the bright spots though, a formidable set recorded by RCA in
Italy in 1962 with Bobby Jaspar on tenor sax and flute, Rene Thomas on
guitar and the rhythm section handled ably by a trio of Italians. These
Foolish Things/ Barbados/ Pent-Up House/ Star Eyes , etc. (AE)
