Recorded on March 9, 1958 and notable for the appearance of
Miles Davis in the rare role of sideman (& one of the few albums without
brother Nat.) Incredible recording with the two stellar frontmen backed by Hank
Jones (p), Sam Jones (b), & Art Blakey (d). Includes the Miles-penned title
track, Nat Adderley's One For Daddy-O, and 3 standards - Autumn Leaves,
Love For Sale & Dancin' In The Dark.

Capitol 95482 |
The Best Of The Capitol Years |
● CD $15.98 |
8 sixties slices from the Riverside and Capitol labels, when
Cannonball's groups had forged a dynamic and soulful mainstream sound.
Opening with a high energy version of his classic Work Song, the
Adderley brothers (that's Nat on cornet) enlist Yusef Lateef or Charles
Lloyd on tenors, pianist Joe Zawinul and a handful of funky rhythm players
on their direct and uncluttered arrangements of Jive Samba/ Fiddler On
The Roof/ Mercy Mercy Mercy, Pops Staples' bluesy Why Am I Treated
So Bad and more. The majority of these are recorded either in concert
or a festive live studio setting, adding to the good-time ambience. Make
no mistake - this is jazz with a feeling! Highly recommended. (MB)

Sophisticated Swing : The EmArcy Small Group
Sessions |
● CD $25.98 |
2 Discs, 36 Tracks, 2 hours, 39 min, essential. An
unbelievable find! The complete recordings of the first Cannonball
Adderley
quintet and a Nat Adderley-led session as well. Four LP's on 2 CD's so
there's also lots of bang for your buck. Consists of the albums "To
the Ivy League from Nat", "Sophisticated Swing",
"Cannonball Enroute", and "Sharp Shooters". This set
even includes the long version of Fuller Bop Man, found only on the
Japanese LP "Mercury 40th anniversary V.S.O.P. Album". I just
can't say enough about this stuff: incredible post-bop recorded between
1956-1958. Cannonball (alto) and Nat (coronet) are joined by Junior Mance
(piano), Sam Jones and Al McKibbon (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Disc 1
has some of the great early Cannonball hits: Bimini/ Hoppin' John/ The
Fatman (a wonderful blues)/ Cobbwebb/ A Foggy Day/ Jeannie;
Disc 2 highlights include: Pooky/ Spring is Here/ That Funky Train/ Our
Delight (beautiful ballad playing: Check out Cannonball!)/ What's
New/ Stay On It. Spectacular solos and arrangements throughout.
Excellent liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. A must have. (PL)

Argentina's Versatile Guitar Genius,
1928-1943 |
● CD $15.98 |
18 tracks, 51 mins, highly recommended. This is the first CD
release of this brilliant Argentinian guitarist. He started playing in the
early 20s and performed and recorded from the mid 20s through the early
70s. He was a truly amazing musician being equally comfortable on a range
of stringed instruments including guitar, Brazillian four stringed
cavaquinho, Hawaiian guitar, etc and his repertoire included jazz, bolero,
fox-trots, tango and more! He settled in Paris in the 30s where he was
considered the only rival to the great Django Reinhardt who was Aleman's
good friend. This CD presents the whole spectrum of Aleman's talents
beinnging with three 1928 duets with G. Bueno Lobo where Lobo or Aleman
play Hawaiian guitar, on Pagina Gris they are joined by violinist
E. Vardaro. From his Paris tenure there are three cuts where he
accompanies Spanish vocalist Lina D'Acosta on three folklore songs, a
couple cuts where he sits in on dobro with Bill Coleman's Orchestra and
Danny Polo's Swing Stars. He returned to Argentina in the early 40s where
he formed a small group Quinteto De Swing and there are 5 varied tracks
from this period. There's not a lot of Aleman's hot jazz guitar on this
collection though it does present an excellent overview of his career and,
hopefully, there is more on the way. Sound is excellent and there are
informative notes and discographical information. (FS)
