Let's Say Goodbye Like We Say Hello |
● CD $97.98 |
This isn't the complete E.T. but it covers one of his most
musically fertile periods: the years 1947 to 1953. 1948 doesn't count,
since the Recording Ban was in effect and few if any commercial recordings
were being made during that year. A lot of his best work can be heard
here, in far clearer form than ever before. Everything from "You Hit
The Nail Right on The Head," "Driftwood on the River," his
spine-chilling "Warm Red Wine" "Seaman's Blues" and
"Slipping Around" to "Have You Ever Been Lonely" from
1948 (the hit version), "Mean Mama Blues, " "Blue
Christmas," "Letters Have No Arms," "You Don't Have to
Be A Baby to Cry" and "Driftwood on the River" was done
during these years. All the duets with Red Foley from the 1956 Red 'N
Ernie LP are here, along with several unissued Foley-Tubb duets. This is
the weakest part of the set, because cute as these duets are on first
listening, after a couple of listens you wonder what was so funny and
understand why many of them were never released. The gospel material, on
the other hand, is excellent as are Tubb's interpretation of the Jimmie
Rodgers songs that influenced his entire career. Such newly-discovered,
unreleased titles as "Don't Your Face Look Red" spice things up
considerably along with unissued versions of his underrated ballad
"Watching My Past Go By" and "Takin' It Easy Here,"
"I'm In A Crowd But So Alone" and "Yesterday's Winner Is A
Loser Today." The significance of this collection is that it reflects
a period when E.T.'s style matured. Tubb authority Ronnie Pugh's booklet
is excellent, and the photos of Tubb and the Troubadours include some
seldom-seen ones of Tubb and the Troubadours entertaining the troops in
Korea in 1952. Absolutely one of Bear Family's finest. (RK)

Yellow Rose Of Texas |
● CD $123.98 |
5 CDs, 150 tracks, approx. 5 hr. 27 min. recommended. Disc
one of this set constitutes some of ET's finest work. His voice and the
Troubadours are perfect on Yellow Rose of Texas/ Till We Two Are One/
Journey's End/ Two Glasses Joe, Jimmie Rodgers' Last Blue Yodel
and Kansas City Blues. A few surprises slip through, like his
excellent Top Ten country version of Chuck Berry's Thirty Days.
Things became shaky beginning in 1957, when Owen Bradley tried in vain to
fit ET into Nashville Sound production, complete with the Anita Kerr
Singers. Things reached a low point with Hey Mr. Bluebird, ET's
1958 hit duet with the Wilburn Brothers, so sticky sweet that even now,
you may need "Mr. Insulin" to get through it. Also on this set
are his 1958 hit Half A Mind and the complete sessions for the
two-LP Ernest Tubb Story LP, stereo remakes of many old hits, some good,
some not. Eventually, ET went back to recording his way, and other
surprises appeared. His 1960 hit version of Connie Francis's Everybody's
Somebody's Fool fit his style perfectly though he didn't do so well
with Billy Bland's Let the Little Girl Dance. Again, the booklet
features outstanding notes by ET authority Ronnie Pugh, currently working
on a Tubb biography for Duke University Press. The rare photo feature
shots of the original Ernest Tubb Record shop. The next Tubb Bear Family
box will round up all his 1936-1947 Bluebird and Decca. Stay tuned. (RK)

Reissue of album originally issued in 1960. In spite of his
name and the album title, Tyler, was actually from Arkansas, but no matter
- this is a good collection of traditional gospel songs originally
recorded for Four Stars. Included are Praise The Lord (Salvation Has
Been Brought Down)/ In The Sweet Bye & Bye/ I Dreamed I Searched
Heaven/ Blessed Jesus Hold My hand/ God Put A rainbow In The Cloud,
etc. (FS)

Carry Me Across The Mountain |
● CD $14.98 |
Debut solo album from fine bluegrass singer,
mandolin player
and guitarist Tyminski who some of you may recognize as the singing voice
of George Clooney in the terrific movie "Oh Brother, Where Art
Thou". Tyminski is a member of Alison Krauss's band and she joins him
on several tracks along with the other fine musicians. Mostly recent
compositions along with a few older tunes.
