| CAFE SOCIETY
The Wrong Place For The Right
People by Barney Josephson with Terry
Trilling-Josephson |
● BOOK $32.95 |
Hardbound, 376 pages, counts as 8 CDs for shipping
"Cafe Society" tells the
personal history of Barney Josephson, proprietor of the legendary
interracial New York City night clubs Caf‚ Society Downtown and Caf‚ Society
Uptown and their successor, The Cookery. Famously known as "the wrong place
for the Right people", Caf‚ Society featured the cream of jazz and blues
performers-among whom were Billie Holiday, Big Joe Turner, Lester Young,
Buck Clayton, and Mary Lou Williams-as well as comedy stars Imogene Coca,
Zero Mostel, and Jack Gilford, the boogie-woogie pianists, and legendary
gospel and folk artists. A trailblazer in many ways, Josephson welcomed
black and white artists to perform for mixed audiences; in particular, he
sought out and developed new performing talent, and he offered musicians and
performers the rare security of continuous work for months and years.
Spanning half a century from the 1930's to 1980's, Josephson's narrative
depicts both the business and the artistic sides of Café Society while
exposing the tensions between the club's own progressive interracial
openness and the more restrictive social and political climate in which it
evolved. A concept ahead of its time, Café Society was acclaimed then and
now for its revolutionary innovations and creativity, inspired by the vision
of one remarkable man.

| AL "JAZZBO" COLLINS |
El ACMEM 162 |
Fairy Tales For Hip Kids Plus ... |
● CD $16.98 |
20 tracks, 79 mins, highly recommended
Al "Jazzbo" Collins
was a perfect mix of Lord Buckley and Slim Gaillard, with a little Steve
Allen thrown in. These "Hip Fairy Tails" started out from Collins' improvs
on his own Jazz radio shows. After the first single Little Red Riding
Hood (track one) sold an impressive 250,000 plus copies a long-player
was in order, laying down the same hipster jive, with equally cool results.
Jack & The Beanstalk/ Three Little Pigs, and beyond got the Jazzbo
touch. Collins was the real deal, a huge asset to the history of Jazz on the
radio. The second half of this CD features his album presenting "The East
Coast Jazz Scene," with such heavy hitters as Don Elliot and Coleman
Hawkins. Definitely one of a kind, thankfully Collins landed in the Bay Area
for the end of his radio career and I can personally attest to him sounding
cool all the way to the end. Fans of Jazz, Beatnik culture and novelty
records will all certainly dig this CD, it's "the Most!" (JM)
