VARIOUS ARTISTS Stax 8559 Superblues - All-Time Classic Blues Hits Vol. 2 ● CD $11.98
A welcome follow-up to the first Superblues compilation (Stax 8551), which I was less than enthusiastic about, due to the glut of over-used blues standards. This one gets higher marks, though it is still heavy on familiar (but timeless) favorites - The Things I Used To Do/ Please Send Me Someone To Love/ Lawdy Miss Clawdy/ Standing At The Crossroads/ Next Time You See Me. Nice surprises include Little Joe Blue's Dirty Work Going On, Sonny Boy #2's Don't Start Me To Talkin', and many soulful pleaders like You Can Make It If You Try/ Will You Ever Be Mine/ You're Gonna Make Me Cry/ You'll Need Another Favor that I'd be happy to listen to for the rest of my days. Compiler Kirk Roberts (Fantasy Records' 4-star general of reissues) makes a nod to collector types by putting Jimmy Hughes' and Johnnie Taylor's versions of Steal Away back to back, and he balances the fare carefully, making sure that there is something for everybody here. VARIOUS ARTISTS Stax 8551 Superblues Vol. 1 - All-Time Classic Blues Hits ● CD $11.98
14 cut blues collection from various labels, all selections are pretty well-known hit singles. B.B. King's The Thrill Is Gone, Z.Z. Hill's Down Home Blues, Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor, Koko Taylor's Wang Dang Doodle, Little Milton's Blue Monday, and versions of Part Time Love by both Little Johnny Taylor and Johnnie Taylor!

VARIOUS ARTISTS Easydisc 7071 Swing Is The Thing ● CD $7.98

VARIOUS ARTISTS HighNote 6004 That Lonely Feeling Called The Blues ● CD $7.98
Unexpecetd release on this mostly jazz label. This is compilation of tracks drawn from recent blues releases - mostly from Chris Millar's Sacramento based Fedroa label along with some others. The material ranges from the very down home sound of former pimp Fillmore Slim to the polished jazzy blues of Etta Jones. Also includes Johnnie Bassett, Irene Reid, J.J. Malone, Willie Willis, Arthur Williams, Robert "Bilbo" Walker, Big Al Dupree, Tommy Bankhead and Charles Earland. A nice, inexpensive way to get a taste of some recent releases.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Relic 7110 Three Shades Of Blues ● CD $13.98
20 tracks, 53 mins, very good Reissue of LP Relic 8003 with 4 additional cuts. Interesting album of mostly previously unissued recordings cut for the Detroit Lupine label between 1959 and 1961. Intense urban blues including there are 8 sides by singer/ guitarist Eddie Kirkland including several with the vocal group The Falcons. These are powerful and intense performances though his over-the-top hoarse vocals and limited emotional range tends to be a bit wearing. There are 4 cuts by Mr. Bo, a fine singer and guitarist who, vocally, is very much influenced by B.B. King - he does a version of Floyd Jones' Hard Times. There are 8 fine sides by The Ohio Untouchables - soul flavored vocals by Benny McCain and nice guitar by Robert Ward. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Westside 570 Tuff Enuff - The Ace Blues Masters, Vol. 3 ● CD $13.98
Another fine collection of blues drawn from the Archives of Ace and its affiliated labels - Champion, Vin and Rex. It includes two double sides down home blues classics - Sammy Myeres Sleeping In The Ground/ My Love Is Here To Stay and Jerry McCain's Steady/ She's Tough. There's more down home blues from Schoolboy Cleve, Lightnin' Slim, Guitar Reed and Frankie Fair and more urban stylings, some New Orleans, from Joe Dyson, Al Collins, Kenzie Moore, Jesse Allen & Little Cameron. It also includes Buddy Guy first recordings that were not issued at the time but have now been reissued many times. Six previously unissued songs and two unissued alternate takes.

VARIOUS ARTISTS BGO BGOCD 456 Urban Blues, Volumes 1 & 2 ● CD $17.98
Two 1970 Imperial albums on one CD - a great collection of sides with less than wonderful sound - Fats Domino, T-Bone Walker, Roosevelt Sykes, Mercy Dee/ Dirty Red, Smiley Lewis, Joe Turner & Wynonie Harris, Archibald, Wee Willie Wayne, etc.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Alan Grant Productions 66886 We Love The Blues ● CD $14.98
15 tracks recorded at live club dates in New York in 1965 for programs hosted by DJ Alan Grant. Includes songs by Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Jimmy Witherspoon, T-Bone Walker and Jimmy Rushing and one by Grant himself.

VARIOUS ARTISTS P-Vine PCD 5807 We're Standing At The Crossroad - Tribute To Robert Johnson ● CD $23.98
And now for something completely different - a tribute to Robert Johnson by Japanese blues performers - half of the songs being sung in Japanese and the rest in an approximation of English. The arrangements are very varied : Mad Words do Love In Vain and They're Red Hot in jug band style and sing in Japanese, The Alligators also sing in Japanese in their rock-blues version of Come In My Kitchen which is one of the most impressive performances here and Ariyoshi Sumito does a nice Jimmy Yancey flavored instrumental piano version of the same song. There are more including Machida Kensuke & Napoleon Yamagishi's If I had Possesion Over Judgement Day and Azumi's Me & The Devil Blues which defy description or understanding. Nothing, if not interesting - and cool cover art!
