| BIG DADDY KINSEY & THE KINSEY REPORT | Rooster Blues 2620 | Bad Situation | $15.98 |
| Excellent debut album by family group from Gary, Indiana
that very neatly mixes traditional Muddy Waters styled Chicago blues and
very contemporary sounds with disco or reggae rhythms and girl choruses and
sounds equally good at all of them. Leader of the group is singer, guitarist
and harmonica player Lester Kinsey, a energetic Albert King styled singer
who also plays some fine slide guitar. He is joined by his sons Donald,
Ralph & Kenneth on guitar, bass, drums and percussions and various other
musicians including Nate Armstrong or Billy Branch/ harmonicas, Pinetop
Perkins or Frankie Hill/ piano and occasional horn sections and girl
choruses. All the material is original and includes a couple of excellent
topical songs. The mixing of traditional blues and contemporary sounds
doesn't often work but here it is very effective. (FS) |

| EDDIE "BLUES MAN" KIRKLAND | Original Blues Classics OBCCD 513 | It's The Blues Man! | $11.98 |
| 12 tracks, 33 min., recommended. Reissue of Tru-Sound 15010
from 1962, also reissued by Red Lightnin'. These are probably the best
recordings by this Alabama bluesman who lived in Detroit and worked
extensively with John Lee Hooker. Kirkland is a wonderfully gritty singer
who really shouts the blues accompanying himself with basic but effectively
stinging guitar and occasional harmonica. He is accompanied by a group of
studio musicians led by the great sax player King Curtis and guitarist Billy
Butler; both supply sympathetic accompaniments. I particularly like the
intense Have Mercy On Me where Curtis's sax echoes Eddie's vocal
lines. A good 'un. |

| BOB KIRKPATRICK | JSP 269 | Going Back To Texas | $14.98 |
| 12 tracks, 51 mins, very good Bob spent the early 70s
playing the Newport Folk Fest that resulted in a Folkways LP in '73, after
which he disappeared from the recording scene. Seems Bob was in Dallas
raising his family, working for the government &, since '86, playing
weekends in local clubs. This is Bob's 1st recording in 23 years, & it's a
fine set of smooth BB King-influenced Texas blues, with Bob on guitar &
vocals & his 4-piece backup band - sax, piano/B3, bass & drums, on a dozen
Kirkpatrick originals, including Big Feet/ Sad Sad Blues/ Every-ree Day
& the title tune. (GM) |

| LOUISIANA BOB KIRKPATRICK | Topcat 2012 | Drive Across Texas | $14.98 |
| 16 tracks, 57 min, recommended U.S. issue of Red Lightnin'
099. Born in Louisiana, based in Texas, Kirkpatrick takes the best of both
styles on this fine collection, recorded In England with the Steve
Coleridge, with Steve on fine harp & Bob on hot guitar. The final tune is a
nice reading of Black Night, the rest are all originals including a
long & short version of Remember, plus Born In Louisiana/ Dallas
Woman/ Please Don't Waste My Time/ Tried So Hard (To Leave You), title
track.(GM) |

| SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK BAND | Bullseye Blues 9510 | Steppin' Out Texas Style | $15.98 |
| Solid set of contemporary Texas blues by quartet fronted by
the energetic guitar work if Joe Kubek. Vocals are by second guitarist
B'nois King who is a relatively undistinguished singer. Gues musicians
include Ron Levy on piano and organ, Greg Wright on tenor sax and "Tino"
Barker on baritone sax. Songs include originals plus tunes from B.B. King,
Willie Dixon, Jimmy McCracklin and others. (FS) |

| SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK BAND | Bullseye Blues 9524 | Chain Smokin' Texas Style | $15.98 |
| Kubek earned his reputation playing behind Al "TNT" Braggs,
Freddie King and others, but didn't really move into the national limelight
until Steppin' Out Texas Style (Bullseye 9510). His second release
once again has smoldering guitar tuned to the key of blues as he works
through a set of originals and well-chosen covers, including a top-notch
version of Willie Dixon's Love To Live The Life and T-Bone Walker's
Little Girl. On Come By Here he proves himself to be a master
of the slide too. The 2nd guitar of Bnois King is a power to be reckoned
with as well, and his lead vocals, while not superb, are more than adequate,
especially on Just For A Little While. Bet these guys could tear a
bar into tiny pieces. (JC) |
