Apparently, this film comes from 1971-72 from a series called Artists In
America. Each of the half hour segments is a documentary-style portrait of
the artist as a blues man. An interview of Hopkins is cut with college
concert footage, solo studio stuff, and cover shots of (presumably)
Houston's black areas. As usual, Hopkins sounds good but he's sounded
better, and they often cut away before he's finished his song. His stories
of how he came to write various songs, including Short Haired Woman,
are worth hearing, but you never get the idea that he's "opening up." The
film makers who shot Sykes were seemingly more successful at getting at who
he was. Highlights include Sykes interpreting the Bible while catching a
fish, some concert shots that show him as happy as his audience, and his
grandson singing I'm A Nut. (JC)
