COMPACT DISCS - Vintage Rock 'n' Roll & Rockabilly
Various Artists
| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Ace CDCHD 289 | Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll | ● CD |
| 30 tracks, very highly recommended The first volume in this long running series. All 30 songs in this collection are pre-British Invasion era, the earliest from 1954 and the latest from 1963. The expected classics are here: The Penguins' Earth Angel, Bobby Day's Rockin' Robin, The Skyliners' Since I Don't Have You, Crests' 16 Candles and so on. But it also contains the less-often collected Sally Go Round The Roses by The Jaynetts, My True Story from The Jive Five, The Genies' Who's That Knocking, I Love How You Love Me by The Paris Sisters, and more. You get over 78 minutes of great music, without having to change 45's every other minute. Liner notes are excellent, and provide the US and UK labels, numbers and peak chart position for every cut. This is a collection put together by people who love the music, on a CD that looks like a 45! Nice touch, no? | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Ace CDCHD 445 | Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 2 | ● CD |
| 30 tracks, 74 min., recommended Sometimes a well-chosen, long, various artist program is just what the CD format seems to have been made for. And this one's a good one. A generous slice of mostly top 40 material recorded between 1956 and 1964, and the companion piece to the earlier issued Volume 1 of the same name (Ace 289). Featured numbers include Memphis by Lonnie Mack, You Belong To Me by the Duprees, A Million To One by Jimmy Charles, Stay by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, You By The Aquatones, I've Had It by the Bell Notes, and Buzz, Buzz, Buzz by the Hollywood Flames. The focus is clearly on the fifties. Sound quality, cover art, and notes are up to Ace's usual high standards. (DH) THE AQUATONES: You/ THE BELL NOTES: I've Had It/ BILLY BLAND: Let The Little Girl Dance/ THE BLUE BELLES: I Sold My Heart To The Junkman/ THE CAPRIS: There's A Moon Out Tonight/ JIMMY CHARLES: A Million To One/ BOBBY COMSTOCK: Let's Stomp/ THE CRESCENDOS: Oh Julie/ KENNY DINO: Your Ma Said You Cried In Your Sleep Last Night/ HAROLD DORMAN: Mountain Of Love/ THE DUPREES: You Belong To Me/ THE ETERNALS: Rockin' In The Jungle/ THE FIVE SATINS: In The Still Of The Night/ GABRIEL & THE ANGELS: That's Life (That's Tough)/ BARBARA GEORGE: I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)/ THE GLADIOLAS: Little Darlin'/ THE HALOS: Nag/ THE HOLLYWOOD ARGYLES: Alley Oop/ THE HOLLYWOOD FLAMES: Buzz Buzz Buzz/ LONNIE MACK: Memphis/ SANDY NELSON: Teen Beat/ THE PARADONS: Diamonds And Pearls/ THE QUINTONES: Stay Aisle Of Love/ THE RIVIERAS: California Sun/ THE ROCKIN' REBELS: Wild Weekend/ THE SILHOUETTES: Get A Job/ THE VIDELS: Mister Lonely/ THE WILLOWS: Church Bells May Ring/ LINK WRAY: Rumble |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Acrobat 6000 | The Rock 'n' Roll Explosion | ● CD |
| 6 CDs, 120 tracks, 300 Mins, highly recommended This is a massive amount of music, in a tight little package (though not a terribly functional little package) for very little money. If you wanted to teach a class on Rock 'N' Roll, this set would pretty much be the perfect collection to tell the story. So many of the classic hits are here, with all of the big names represented - Elvis, Fats Domino, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and all of their contemporaries as well as some greats that aren't necessarily household names. Next to Gene Vincent's Be Bop A Lu La, there is also his Bluejean Bop, and Race With The Devil. Next to The Platters, there are The Turbins, Cadilacs, Five Keys, and Domino's. Then there's Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Smiley Lewis--it goes on and on. This is an instant jukebox, and even some of the hardcore collectors might find a track or two that they don't have. Only the full track listing will tell for sure, but I am guessing this could easily replace a lot of lesser compilations in our collections with its fantastic sound and thorough line-up. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Acrobat ACQCD 7008 | Brylcreemed Boys & Beehived Birds - Birth Of British Ro | ● CD |
| 4 discs, 128 tracks, recommended If you ever wanted to find out how British Rock n' Roll measures to the Yank variety, well here's your chance; this 4 disc box set does a good job of illustrating what went on in Britain while we were digging the R&B of LaVern Baker, Ray Charles, and Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and the Rock n' Roll of Bill Haley, Elvis, and Chuck Berry. The discs spotlight nearly everyone who loomed large in early Brit R 'N' R: Tommy Steele, Marty Wilde, Larry Page, Frankie Vaughan, Alma Cogan, Winifred Atwell and more. This music is not everybody's cup of tea (pun intended), but for anyone who wants to hear the British response to Bill Haley and the Comets, this is the box set for you. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Acrobat 7009 | Pig Iron, Washboards, Freight Trains & Kazoos | ● CD |
| Four CD set with 120 tracks (!) features the most
in-depth look at that peculiarly British popular music phenomenon -
Skiffle. With it's home made, do it yourself ethos skiffle briefly
rivaled rock 'n' roll and the hot, new teenage craze during 1956 and
'57. This compilation features every major skiffle and all the genres
big names along with lots of lesser known artists. Includes Lonnie
Donegan, The Vipers Skiffle Group, Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group, City
Ramblers, Alan Lomax & The Ramblers, Johnny Duncan & His Bluegrass Boys,
Alexis Korner's Breakdown Group (with Cyril Davies), Johnny Parker's
Washboard Band, Ken Colyer Skiffle Group, Bob Wallis' Washboard Beaters,

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Acrobat ACTRCD 9005 | British No. 1 Hits, 1950-1957: Melodies, Mambo, Waltzes | ● CD |
| 3 discs, 75 tracks, recommended This box set is exactly what the title says: a collection of No. 1 British hits from the years 1050 to '57, and for the most part the music is pre-rock 'n' roll pop that runs the gamut from show tunes and movie music (Moulin Rouge, Mantovani; Secret Love, Doris Day; Three Coins in the Fountain, Frank Sinatra) to mainstream pop (The Tennessee Waltz, Patti Page; Comes A-Long-A-Love, Kay Starr) to novelty tunes (I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat, Mel Blanc) to country (Guy Mitchell, Frankie Laine, Tennesse Ernie Ford) and everything in between. Rock 'n' Roll rears its ugly head on disc 2 in the form of Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock and Frankie Lymon & the Teenager's Why Do Fools Fall in Love, and fully takes hold on disc 3 with Johnny Ray, Tommy Steele, Lonnie Donegan (skiffle division), Elvis, and the Crickets (with Buddy Holly). Basically, this set is for musicologists, the curious, and anyone else who wants to know what our British cousins listened to before rock 'n' roll turned the world upside down. From this evidence, I'd say that British tastes weren't that different from American ones, at least during the first half of the decade. (GMC) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Charly CPCD 8137 | Unissued Sun Masters | ● CD |
| 30 tracks, 69 min., recommended These vintage rockabilly tracks, not up to Sam Phillips "release standard" at the time of their recording in the mid-50's to early 60's, may not compare handsomely with the prime works of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny, Warren, Carl or Billy, but they still make most of the non-Sun competition look pretty weak. And this material is truly obscure, with many cuts not listed in previous "complete" discographies and all appearing on CD for the first time. Includes artists like Howard Chandler, Curley Money (the great Chain Gang Charlie with hot guitar), Andy Anderson (a slow alternate of his Johnny Valentine), Jesse Lee Turner, Narvel Felts, Carl McVoy, Curtis Hobeck, Teddy Reidel and others. There is even an unknown artist with a terrific bluesy Little Red Hen. If you're a got-to-have-it-all Sun Records fan, or if you're just a dyed-in-the-wool rockabilly lover, this is not a disc you'll want to pass by. A number of these tracks have subsequently turned up on Volume 14 of "That'll Flat Git" on Bear Family ($21.98) . Solid sound quality, and worthwhile artist-by-artist liner notes by Adam Komorowski. (DH/ FS) ANDY ANDERSON: Johnny Valentine/ HOWARD CHANDLER: Wampus Cat/ HAROLD DORMAN: I'm Stepping Aside/ NARVEL FELTS: Cry Baby Cry/ Did You Tell Me/ Teenage Way/ RAY GARDEN: This Chick/ RUDY GRAYZELL: Remember When/ JIMMY HAGGETT: Rabbit Action/ CURTIS HOBACK: King Is Back, The/ With My Best Friend/ GLENN HONEYCUTT: Campus Love/ CARL MCVOY: Little Girl/ You're The Only Star/ CURLEY MONEY: Chain Gang Charlie/ KEN PARCHMAN: Love Crazy Baby/ Treat Me Right/ DICK PENNER: Someday Baby/ JOHNNY POWERS: But Now That It's Over/ Don't Got Away/ LYNN PRATT: If I Can't Have You/ JIMMY PRITCHETT: Nothing On My Mind/ TEDDY REIDEL: Stop/ Tired Of Love/ GENE ROSS: Everybody's Trying To Kiss My Baby/ GENE SIMMONS: Peroxide Blond & Hopped Up Model Ford/ RAY SMITH: Right Behind You Baby/ CLIFF THOMAS: Dance Little Girl/ JESSE LEE TURNER: Put Me Down/ UNKNOWN ARTIST: Little Red Hen |

country, bluegrass and, out of left field, the pre war black group The
Cotton Top Mountain Sanctified Singers with the great Christ Was Born

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Collectables 5319 | Have Yourself A Ball | ● CD |
| Originally an LP on the English Krazy Kat label. A set
of 14 sides from Gotham's rock'n'roll subsidiary 20th Century. Most of
the tunes are in a Bill Haley-ish rockaphilly jive style featuring brass
sections, sax solos and forced-sounding "teenaged" lyrics. The best here
are the 5 earliest Charlie Gracie sides, pre-Cameo, backed by The
Wildcats - helped quite a bit by Charlie's great guitar solos - Honey
Honey/ Wildwood Boogie + 3. There's a couple alternate takes by
Bobby Boyd's Jazz Bombers, unissued material by The Playboys and
coverboys Don Haven & The Hi-Fi's (which may also be The Playboys, The
Nu-Tones, heard here on Jump Figaro Jump and The Bombers) and
finally 2 by Mike Pedicin Quintet including his hit cover of Shake A
Hand. BOBBY BOYD'S JAZZ BOMBERS: Dilly Dally/ Rockin' And Rollin' The Blues/ CHARLIE GRACIE & THE WILDCATS: Frankie And Johnny/ Head Home Honey/ Honey Honey/ My Baby Loves Me/ Wildwood Boogie/ DON HAVEN & THE HI-FI'S: Everybody's Going Crazy/ Have Yourself A Ball/ THE NUTONES: Jump Figaro Jump/ MIKE PEDECIN QUINTET: Shake A Hand/ THE MIKE PEDECIN QUINTET: Disc Jockey's Boogie/ THE PLAYBOYS: Everybody's Going Crazy/ Mambo Boogie |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Del-Fi 9008 | Wild Surf | ● CD |
| 24 tracks, 55 min, recommended This solid sampler collects top-notch tracks from Del-Fi's finest and even throws in some lesser-knowns as a bonus. The Lively Ones start things off with Surf Rider/Wipeout!/Misirlou/Surf Beat and their awesome Exodus with energy to spare, followed by the Centurions with 3 of their best Surfin' At Mazatland/Bullwinkle Pt. II/Body Surfin'. Dave Myers and the Surftones pile on the reverb for the staples Church Key/Moment Of Truth, while San Luis' Sentinals get exotic on 5 more, including Latin Soul/Exotic. The Impacts (featuring Merrel Fankhauser) slow it down with the excellent Blue Surf, only to follow it with the thundering Impact. You'll also find the (Original) Surfaris classic 2-sided blast Bombora/Surfari, 2 tunes from the pre-Lively Ones Surfmen (Paradise Cove/Ghost Hop), both sides of the mysterious Pharos' single (Pintor/Rhythm Surfer), and the Gonzos (actually the Centurions in disguise) wacky vocal take of Church Key. Good notes give background on all the bands. If you're wondering what the Del-Fi surf sound is all about, here's your answer. (GDR) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Dragon Street 70100 | The Big "D" Jamboree - Live, Vols 1 & 2 | ● CD |
| Two Cds, 54 tracks, 145 mins, highly recommended Last copy.Another amazing production from Dragon Street Records - this one features two CDs of live recordings made at Dallas's Big "D" in the 50s drawn from recently discovered transcriptions. Most of the recordings were made between 1956 and 1959 along with a short show from 1950. Disc one is all country and disc two is rockabilly and rock 'n roll. Highlight of the set are five live tracks by the great Carl Perkins with his band including his takes on some recent hits by other artists including a fabulous version of That's All Right based on the Elvis version. Some of the tracks from the rockabilly disc have been out on previous Dragon Street issues (Groovey Joe Poover, Johnny Dollar, Gene Vincent) but we also get to hear Johnny Carroll, the mediocre Belew Twins, local rocker Tommy Mitchell doing a good version of Elvis's Too Much, Warren Smith (great!), Jerry Reed, Sid King & The Five Strings, Werly Fairburn, Orville Couch and Ronnie Dee (Dawson). On the country side we get Johnny Cash doing doing three of his recent recordings, The Texas Stompers (the house band which was basically an augmented version of the Light Crust Doughboys), Cowboy Copas, ferlin Husky, Hank Locklin, The Kentucky Mountain Boys, Sherry Davis, Leon Payne, Wanda Jackson and others. There's lots of interesting between song patter and introductions from announcer Johnny Hicks. Sound quality is superb and the set is beautifully packaged in a fold out digipack and comes with a 32 page booklet with extensive notes by Kevin Coffey and lots of great vintage photos - many of them from the Jamboree itself. A class production all round. (FS) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Eagle 90205 | Chicken Rock - Rockin' Around The Mountain | ● CD |
| 29 tracks, 65 mins, highly recommended Excellent and intriguing collection of mostly unissued tracks (at least that's what it claims!) of rockabilly and rock' n' roll. Highlight is four cuts by Carl Perkins, supposedly from an acetate featuring him doing four Sun era songs - Movie Magg/ Turn Around/ Put Your Cat Clothes On/ Look At The Moon. Are these Sun outtakes? Lot's of other good cuts too particularly from The Kingbeats, Jimmy Evans, Red Hadley (a great version of Piano Red's She Knows How To Rock Me), John Kline & Eddie Bond (his Cotton Patch Hop is mistitled Patchuko Hop). There are a couple of excellent instrumentals from The Gentry Brothers. Some nice photos in booklet but no notes - I'd love to know the story behind these sides. (FS) EDDIE BOND: Patchako Hop/ WAYNE BUSBY: Live Your Life With Care/ JIMMY EVANS: I Hate To Say Goodbye/ Pink Cadillac/ What Am I Gonna Do/ THE GENTRY BROTHERS: Swanky (alt) (inst)/ Swooney (alt) (inst)/ RED HADLEY: She Knows How To Rock Me (unissued)/ NEVILLE HAWKS: I Got A Baby (unissued)/ Make It Like Rock 'N' Roll (unissued)/ Morse Code (unissued)/ THE KINGBEATS: I'll Tell My Mama On You/ I've Been A Bad Bad Boy/ I've Been A Bad Bad Boy (alt)/ JOHN KLINE: Rock-A-Billy Baby (unissued)/ DICKEY LEE: She Wears My Goin' Steady Ring/ CURTIS LITTLE: She Won't Let Me Down (unissued)/ WAYNE MCGINNIS: Rock 'N' Roll Rhythm(alt)/ THOMAS MITCHELL: I'm A Wise Ole Cat/ THE MOUNTAIN RAMBLERS: Rockin' Round The Mountain/ CARL PERKINS: Look At That Moon (vers. 1)/ Movie Magg(alt)/ Put Your Cat Clothes On (vers. 3)/ Turn Around(alt)/ JOHNNY POWERS: Fallin' Star/ The Bigger They Are/ TOMMY TUCKER: Little More Lovin'/ Rock 'N' Roll Mama/ THE YELVINGTON: Malcolm, It's Me, Baby(alt) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | El Toro 1011 | Tennessee Rock 'n' Billy 1955 | ● CD |
| 33 tracks, 77 min., recommended The territory covered here is mostly familiar, despite (or because of?) the narrow theme chosen for this album. Sun cuts (usual suspects and a few surprises, including Rock 'n' Roll Baby and You're My Baby, demos from Johnny Cash, later recorded for real by Warren Smith and others. Johnny Burnette's Von recordings are here (both of them) with enough surface noise to make them sound authentic. And while aural imperfections derived from vinyl source material (hear Oh Stop! by The Tunesmiths) comes with the rockabilly addiction, why the Sons Of The Pioneers' The Tennessee Rock And Roll (which it isn't) suffers from an embarrassing amount of surface noise is tough to figure, since it came out on a major label. Surely Bear Family has already digitized it, no? Other labels represented include the Hollywood-based Ekko, Columbia, Mercury, Atomic, Meteor, Hickory, and others. A pleasing and generous collection where every song is at least pretty good and many are wonderful. (JC) SMOKEY JOE BAUGH: Hula Bop/ Listen To Me/ EDDIE BOND: Double Duty Lovin'/ Talking Off The Wall/ BARNEY BURCHAM: Can't Steal My Way Around/ JOHNNY BURNETTE: Go Mule Go/ You're Undecided/ THE CARLISLES: Nine Have Tried (And Nine Have Died)/ JOHNNY CASH: Rock 'n' Roll Ruby/ You're My Baby/ ERNIE CHAFFIN: Get Me On Your Mind/ I Can't Lose The Blues/ JACK EARLS: Hey Jim/ They Can't Keep Me From You/ CURLEY GRIFFIN: You Gotta Play Fair/ RED HADLEY: Brother, That's All!/ Ring Out Those Bells/ JESS HOOPER: All Messed Up/ Sleepy Time Blues/ RUSTY & DOUG KERSHAW (WITH WILEY BARKDULL): So Lovely Baby/ MAC & JAKE: Yakety Yak/ LLOYD MCCULLOUGH: Oh Darling/ Watch That Girl/ CARL PERKINS: Gone, Gone, Gone/ You Can't Make Love To Somebody/ ELVIS PRESLEY: I Forgot To Remember To Forget/ I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone/ MAC SALES: A Gal Named Joe/ THE SONS OF THE PIONEERS: The Tennessee Rock and Roll/ HAYDEN THOMPSON: Act Like You Love Me/ I Feel The Blues Comin' On/ THE TUNESMITHS: Baby, I'm Ready/ Oh Stop! |

| 30 tracks, 67 mins, highly recommended A very hot collection of black and white rock 'n roll from the 50s. Intriguingly it includes a track from 1954 called Oh Maria which is supposed to be by the Cubans featuring Chuck Berry before he signed to Chess! Is it? Could be - it is a calypso flavored number not unlike some of those Chuck recorded for Chess but no guitar - so.... Among the rockin' gems here are Buck Rogers & His Jets doing Rose Marie, The Satans cover Lazy Lester's rockin' blues Sugar Coated Love, Sleepy LaBeef outrasps Hank Ballad on his version of Tore Up, T.V. Slim tells what happened when Flatfoot Sam Met Jim Dandy, Clyde Stacy does one of those great clanging guitar instrumentals, the previously unissued Tranquilizer which is anything but tranquil and Terry Clement & His True Tones treat us to a great Cajun instrumental with accordion French Blues.. Lots more from Big Al Downing, Claude Robinson & Group, the wonderful Five Chavis Brothers, Floyd Dakil Combo, Paul Peek, James Carter & The Sentimentals, Dick Holler, Rod Bernard (about the only slow number here!), Lee Diamond & The Upsetters and many others. Some duplication with other reissues. (FS) T.V. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Proper BOX 103 | From Boppin' Hillbilly To Red Hot Rockabilly | ● CD |
| Four CDs, 120 tracks, highly recommended Fabulous collection of up-tempo hillbilly and rockabilly from the period 1951 to 1955. The first two discs are predominantly country artists and the second predominantly rockabilly though the transition between the two is pretty seamless and Hardrock Gunter's 1951 recording of Hesitation Boogie rocks almost as hard as recordings made four years later and Billy Starr's 1953 cover of Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog is just as wild as Elvis's version from three years later though not as good. Many of the sides here have been on CD before though a number are pretty hard to find and the presentation here is great with superb sound and a 68 page illustrated booklet with extensive notes by rock 'n' roll expert Adama Komorowski and full discographical info. Artists include Rose Maddox, Forest Rye, Jess Willard, Lucky Joe Almond, Charline Arthur, Little Jimmy Dickens (a great cover of Piano Red's Rock Me), Ray Batts, Lattie Moore, Johnny Hicks, Jimmy & Duane, Frankie Miller, Lloyd McCullough, Jimmy Myares, Carl perkins, Sid King & the Five Strings, The Miller Sisters, Rudy Gray, gene Henslee, Skeeter Bonn, Charlie Adams, Buck Griffin, Chuck Murphy, Malcolm Yelvington, Elvis Presley, Charlie Brown, Werly Fairburn, Barney Burcham, The farmer Boys, Sonny Fisher and many more. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Proper BOX 122 | Classic Rockabilly | ● CD |
| Four CDs, 120 tracks, highly recommended If you're only get one rockabilly collection this is probably the one to get with 120 classic sides covering rockabilly's heyday from late 1954 to late 1956. All the rockabilly heroes are here - Elvis, Carl Perkins, Billy Lee Riley, Johnny Carroll, Warren Smith, Charlie Feathers, Gene Vincent, Roy Orbison, Eddie Bond, Johnny Burnette, etc. along with country stars who hitched their wagon to the rockabilly style with verve - Skeets McDonald, Red Foley, Webb Pierce, George Jones, Freddie Hart, etc. as well as a host of performers who only recorded a few sides but left an indelible mark on the music - Jeff Daniels, Wayne McGinnis, Sammy Masters, Sonee West, Lew Williams, Bill Flagg, Joe Clay, Hal Willis, Jaycee Hill, Jimmy Johnson and many more. Diehard rockabilly fans will probably have everything here but just about every track is, indeed, a classic and the set comes with a thick 68 page booklet with extensive notes by rockabilly expert Adam Komorowski (who also compiled this set) along with loads of artists photos and label shots and full discographical details. Tracks are arranged in a cute way - disc one is all songs with "Rock" in the title, disc has "Cat" or "Chick" in the title, disc 3 has "Bop","Shake" or "Boogie" in the title and the fourth disc has "Baby" in each title. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Proper BOX 143 | Rockin' Memphis | ● CD |
| 4 CDs, 118 tracks, highly recommended Considering this set focuses on one of the all-time great music cities in it's prime, the main question about this is whether you have this material or not; if you don't, then you need it. Disc one concentrates on the Blues and Rhythm & Blues backbone of the Memphis scene with key recordings like B.B. King's B.B. Boogie, Jackie Brenston (with Ike Turner's band) doing Rocket 88, Rufus Thomas' version of Decorate the Counter, along with his Bear Cat, and Tiger Man, Little Junior Parker's Mystery Train, as well as great tracks by Johnny Ace, Little Milton, Roscoe Gordon, Willie Nix and more. Disc two digs up the Country roots with great tracks by Slim Rhodes, Malcolm Yelvington, Charlie Feathers, Eddie Collins and more, with the certain appeal of having lesser-known tracks by well known artists like Warren Smith's Black Jack David, and Dorsey Burnett's Let's Fall in Love. Disc three takes us to when the black & white combined to make things red-hot! Featuring essential tracks by The Rock & Roll Trio, Carl Perkins, Warren Smith, Sonny Burgess, Elvis, and Johnny Cash, etc, alongside lesser known tracks by Eddie Bond, Junior Thompson, Charlie Feathers, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more. If the first three discs didn't knock you out completely disc four is another heavy dose, but this time mostly compromised of great, rarer tracks. Probably the best known track on this disk is Billy Lee Riley's Red-Hot, but it is in great company next to tracks like Carl Mann and his Kool Kats Gonna Rock and Roll Tonight, Hayden Thompson's One Broken Heart, Cliff Gleaves' Love is My Business, and Lee Carzle with Bobby Mizzel & the Le-Bows' (they are a household name right?) I'm Asking, But I'm Not Getting. All this and more plus a thick booklet packed with all kinds of obscure information. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Proper BOX 146 | Rare Rock 'n' Roll Rampage | ● CD |
| Four CDs, 100 tracks, highly recommended Although there are quite a few collections out there that look at early rock 'n' roll from the perspective of rockabilly - that Southern blend of supercharged down home blues and honky tonk hillbilly this is the first in-depth look at the early days of urban rock 'n' roll. Apart from Boyd Bennet and the Rockets most of the artists here show very little hillbilly influence and the blues roots are the jump blues of artists like Louis Jordan and Jimmy Preston along with elements of pop and jazz thrown into the mix. The set opens with two tracks from 1951 by the remarkable Jimmy Cavello & His Rockers - Cavello, who is still active today 81. He was a fine singer and dynamite sax player and was one of the earliest white artists to perform jump R&B and these early sides include covers of tunes by Joe Morris and Jimmy Preston along with his own meaningful Leave Married Women Alone. The rest of the set draws from the period 1953 to 1957 and features several more fine sides by Cavallo though some are more geared towards a teen audience. The set features a fair proportion of sides recorded by the superb Boyd Bennett & His Rockets who were one of the best bands working in the pop rock genre in the 50's. They started off in a Bill Haley vein but rock a lot harder on their best stuff, probably due to their rubbing shoulders with all of those R&B greats at King records. Their repertoire includes a mix of originals and R&B and rock 'n' roll covers. Freddie Bell were a pioneering rock 'n' roll group in Philadelphia starting with the obscure Teen label before moving to Mercury. Although having no U.S. hits they made some fine music though occasionally strayed into teen pap. They were among the first white artists to cover Hound Dog and seeing them live led to Elvis recording the songs. This set includes their original 1955 Teen recording of Hound Dog along with their 1956 remake for Mercury. Some of their later sides feature the stellar guitar playing of Mickey Baker. There are 11 tracks by Jimmy Daley and The Ding-A-Lings but don't go looking for any biographica information on Daley as he was a fictional character from the movie "Rock Pretty Baby" buty Decca went ahead and issued an album from the movie as by Jimmy Daley & The Ding-A-Lings - the Ding-A-Lings were actually the Henry Macini Orchestra! Other artists include The Treniers, Dave Appel & The Applejacks (a pretty bland group), Rusty Draper, Eddie Fontaine, Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones (a fine, more rockabilly flavored group), Paul Hampton and others. Sound quality is superb and the 44 page booklet has extensive notes by Adam Komorowski and full discographical info. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Sequel NEM 670 | Roulette Rock & Roll, Vol 2 | ● CD |
| 22 tracks, 53 min., recommended An interesting and worthwhile set culled from various labels that originated with the highly successful George Goldner, including Roulette, Gone, Gee, Rama, and Mark X. The two opening tracks are The Whammy and Strange by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, followed by six 1960-1961 tracks by Wynonie Harris (four of which are previously unreleased), four early Isley Brothers numbers including Everybody's Gonna Rock, plus one generally upbeat number each by the Gone All Stars, the Duponts, the Cookies, The 4 Chaps, the Emanons, the Echoes, the Valentines, the Chaperones, Jesse Powell & the Caddies, and Mabel King. Most of the tracks are from the mid- to late 50's. A nice collection, with informative notes by Adam Komorowski, several vintage photos, and fine cover graphics. (DH) |

| VARIOUS ARTISTS | Spade 3013 | The Best Of Spade Records | ● CD |
| 31 tracks, 74 mins, recommended Previously issued as Spade 199955. Spade was a small Texas label run by hustler supreme Bennie Hess in the 50s and this collection features recordings issued on Spade as well as other Hess labels like Pearl, Show Land, TAP and Major. Hess himself contributes 11 tracks ranging from the fine rockers Bennie Hess Boogie and Boppin' The Rock to four acoustic blues songs featuring some mediocre guitar playing. He also does a nice Jimmy Rodgers style blues (Hess supposedly knew Rodgers) and a couple of straight country items. Vern Pullens is the most exciting artist here with six hot rockabilly numbers including the all time classic Bop Crazy Baby and a nice country performance. Royce Porter has a couple of nice songs and a couple of duds and the set is rounded out by some enjoyable sides from Donald Simpson, Ray Doggett, Meredith Neal, Carl Gillion and Carl Greene. The liner notes tell us a bit about Hess's life and business practices that is covered in length in the notes to Hydra 27129 Bennie Hess - Wild Hog Hop..!!! ($21.98) which also includes most of the Hess sides here. Most worthwhile. | VARIOUS ARTISTS | Varese 66382 | The Sun Songbook | ● CD |
| 18 tracks, 38 min, recommended When you have a label that was indeed a powerhouse in the 50s into the early 60s, as great as it is, there comes a time where everything's been put out. What you need is a marketing gimmick. What we have here is a disc full of tunes written by Sun artists but recorded by other Sun artists. There are a few that were actually released at the time by Sun - there's a great version of Charlie Rich's Break Up done by Ray Smith, & of course there's Billy Lee Riley's classic take on Billy "The Kid" Emerson's Red Hot, along with Jerry Lee Lewis' version of Roy Orbison's Rock House. But most of these tunes were unreleased at the time & include a few lesser tracks as Jeb Stuart's Just Walkin' In The Rain. But what may be most interesting is some demos done by the songwriters, my fave being Johnny Cash with Little Wooly Booger (You're My Baby), along with Harold Jenkins (later known as Conway Twitty) doing Rock House, a song he wrote with Roy Orbison, & a couple by Charlie Rich.
