JOE BARRY Edsel 610 The Loneliest Boy In The World ● CD $17.98 $10.98
17 tracks, very good
17 tracks (including several alternate takes) recorded for Huey Meaux in the mid 60s by this fine swamp popper best known for his fine 1961 hit I'm A Fool To Care. The material here is a mix of swamp pop ballads, Louisiana rockers and country songs. Best of the tracks is the rocking title song, the intense ballad Fat's In The Fire, with some very nice guitar, the Elvis flavored You Belong To My Heart and some others. Like other titles in this series which relies extensively on unissued demos, some of the material is fairly mediocre and the alternate takes are unecesarry. But there's definitely some worthwhile material here. (FS)

JOE BARRY Edsel 617 (AKA Roosevelt Jones) Crazy Cajun Recordings, Vol. 2 ● CD $17.98 $10.98
16 more sides recorded for Huey Meaux in the 60s with Joe using the pseudonym Roosevelt Jones in an ttempt to persuade listeners that he was black! Includes Greatest Moment Of My Life/ You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry/ Come What May/ You Call Everybody Darlin'/ I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover, etc.

THE BLASTERS Hightone 8148 Trouble Bound - Live 2002 ● CD $15.98 $8.98
17 tracks, 67 min, recommended
The original Blasters back & loud! Led by the feudin' Alvin brothers, Phil on vocals & rhythm & Dave on lead (I heard rumors that Dave may be joining Dylan's band!) with original rhythm section of Jon Bazz & Bill Bateman, with relative newcomer Gene Taylor on piano - he didn't join the band until after their 2nd LP! Very solid & rockin', with all the faves from the old days (American Music/ Marie Marie/ Long White Cadillac/ Hollywood Bed/ Trouble Bound. Recorded live at the House of Blues in L.A. during two 2002 reunion shows. (GM)

JIMMY CLANTON Westside 842 Jimmy's Happy/ Jimmy Blue ● CD $15.98 $10.98
Two of Jimmy's early 60s Ace albums on one CD - You're Just In Love/ Jimmy's Tune/ I'm Sitting On Top Of The World/ I'm Beginning To See The Light/ Over The Rainbow/ Somebody, Please help Me/ Don't Look At Me, etc.

ROY HEAD Edsel 598 White Texas Soul Shouter - Crazy Cajun Recordings ● CD $17.98 $10.98
24 tracks featuring Texas singer Roy Head on a collection of rock 'n' roll, R&B, blues and soul songs recorded for Huey Meaux in the early 70s - mostly covers. Includes One More Time/ Get Out Of My Life Woman/ I'm Not A Fool Anymore/ Double Your Satisfaction/ Bring It To jerome/ Drivin' Wheel/ How Do You Think I Can Live With Somebody/ Do What You Can Do, etc. The opening cuts is supposed to be a version of One More Time by Roy but is actually a song by Lowell Fulson. No doubt a tape error. As far as I know all copies are like this.

ERSEL HICKEY Collectables 6479 The Rockin' Bluebird ● CD $13.98 $10.98
20 track collection of Epic sides from the late 50s and early 60s including Ersel's only hit Bluebirds Over The Mountain plus Goin' Down That Road/ You Never Can Tell/ Don't Be Afraid Of Love/ People Gotta Talk/ What Do You Want?/ Stardust Brought Me You, etc.

AUGIE MEYERS & THE WESTERN HEAD BAND Edsel 554 Live At The Longneck ● CD $17.98 $9.98
11 tracks, 33 mins, recommended
When Augie Meyer rocked the organ solo in She's About A Mover in 1965, he had the longest man hair in Texas Rock `n' Roll, with it flowing radically past his shirt collar. Ten years later, Augie still had the longest man hair in Texas Rock `n" Roll, with a hippy pony tail that was down to his butt when he tore apart the Longneck bar in San Antonio doing among others, Hello, Mary Lou/ Hen Pecked Polka, and even the most rockin' version of the Hokey Pokey ever. He was a firebrand in '65 and a legend in '75, releasing records on his own Texas Record Company and ruling the local bars, when he wasn't jammin' with Dylan or re-uniting with Sir Doug and crew. In 1975 he was (and still is) cooking up a hardy musical stew of R'N'R, Blues, Tex-Mex, Country and yes, even Polka! There is a strong contingent of Sir Doug, Augie, Texas Tornadoes etc. fans among the Roots and Rhythm regulars who will certainly dig this. Great notes by John Lomax III and the Edsel crew as well. (JM)

AUGIE MEYERS & THE WESTERN HEAD BAND Edsel EDCD 555 Finally In Lights ● CD $17.98 $8.98
10 tracks, 35 Mins, recommended
Tex-Mex superstar Augie Meyers and his rag-tag band of hippies and outlaws tore up the San Antonio Texas scene in the 1970's and occasionally still do today. Edsel records is doing a fine job re-issuing all of Augie's records from the time that he put out on his own "The Texas Re Cord Co" based out of his home town of Bulverde (I'm pretty sure that means bull in green sauce) Texas, just north of San Antonio. This batch of ten eclectic tunes features 7 originals by Meyers, country standards Release Me and Deep In The Heart Of Texas and the swell "Cowboy" Jack Clement song Miller's Cave. Articulate and entertaining liner notes by Clayton (Augie's Son) Meyers (original) and John Lomax III (new), as well as a complete album discography covering The Sir Douglas Quartet through to the Texas Tornadoes (R.I.P. Doug Sahm & Freddy Fender). (JM)

SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET Edsel 557 Live Love ● CD $17.98 $11.98
10 tracks, 37 min., highly recommended
Recorded live at The Armadillo in Austin, Texas, in 1977, this SDQ show offers an admirable eclecticism of song that few groups could match. These boys take diverse material from many musical styles and play them all as if they were born doing it. They cover Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood, Roosevelt Sykes' Drivin' Wheel, the Smokey Robinson-penned My Girl, Roky Erickson's Starry Eyes, and assorted originals by Mr. Sahm. Original band member and sought after session man Augie Meyers works his brand of tex-mex magic throughout. And indeed both sets of booklet notes are all about Meyers (Sir Doug is barely mentioned) as this is part of Edsel's efforts to reissue albums from Meyers' own record label. A nice set, if a bit short. (JC)

WARREN STORM Edsel 636 King Of The Dance Halls - The Crazy Cajun Recordings ● CD $17.98 $11.98
26 tracks, 67 mins, highly recommended
We've managed to turn up a few copies of this out of print set.Terrific collection of swamp pop from one of Louisiana's finest singers recorded for Huey Meaux's Crazy Cajun label between 1963 and 1973. Warren, who is also a superb drummer, started recording for Jay Miller's Nasco label in 1958 and on many of his recordings for Miller he sounded like a Fats Domino imitator. By the time of these recordings he found his own voice and a very fine and expressive one it is. The selection is a mixture of new songs, R&B, rock 'n' roll and country favorites - all given a soulful swamp feel. Among the highlights are superb blue eyed soul renditions of two country oldies Daydreamin' and Tennessee Walts, a fine version of Delbert McClinton's Honky Tonkin' and a cover of Fats Doomino's Blue Monday which shows just how far he's come since his days of imitating Domino. But it's all good and unlike some of the Crazy Cajun reissues there are no bad tracks here. A few of the unissued tracks were from a tape with variable tape speed but these have been fixed as to be barely noticeable. Informative notes by Louisiana expert John Broven though some discographical data would have been welcome. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Charly CPCD 8137 Unissued Sun Masters ● CD $13.98 $10.98
30 tracks, 69 min., recommended
These vintage rockabilly tracks, not up to Sam Phillips "release standard" at the time of their recording in the mid-50's to early 60's, may not compare handsomely with the prime works of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny, Warren, Carl or Billy, but they still make most of the non-Sun competition look pretty weak. And this material is truly obscure, with most cuts not listed in previous "complete" discographies. Among the featured tracks are Wampus Cat by Howard Chandler, Treat Me Right by Ken Parchman, Peroxide Blond & Hopped Up Model Ford by Gene Simmons, Teenage Way by Narvel Felts, Little Girl by Carl McVoy, I'm Stepping Aside by Harold Dorman, Tired of Love by Teddy Reidel, and But Now That It's Over by Johnny Powers. If you're a got-to-have-it-all Sun Records fan, or if you're just a dyed-in-the-wool rockabilly lover, this is not a disc you'll want to pass by. Solid sound quality, and worthwhile artist-by-artist liner notes by Adam Komorowski. (DH)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collectables 5319 Have Yourself A Ball ● CD $11.98 $6.98
Originally an LP on the English Krazy Kat label. A set of 14 sides from Gotham's rock'n'roll subsidiary 20th Century. Most of the tunes are in a Bill Haley-ish rockaphilly jive style featuring brass sections, sax solos and forced-sounding "teenaged" lyrics. The best here are the 5 earliest Charlie Gracie sides, pre-Cameo, backed by The Wildcats - helped quite a bit by Charlie's great guitar solos - Honey Honey/ Wildwood Boogie + 3. There's a couple alternate takes by Bobby Boyd's Jazz Bombers, unissued material by The Playboys and coverboys Don Haven & The Hi-Fi's (which may also be The Playboys, The Nu-Tones, heard here on Jump Figaro Jump and The Bombers) and finally 2 by Mike Pedicin Quintet including his hit cover of Shake A Hand.
BOBBY BOYD'S JAZZ BOMBERS: Dilly Dally/ Rockin' And Rollin' The Blues/ CHARLIE GRACIE & THE WILDCATS: Frankie And Johnny/ Head Home Honey/ Honey Honey/ My Baby Loves Me/ Wildwood Boogie/ DON HAVEN & THE HI-FI'S: Everybody's Going Crazy/ Have Yourself A Ball/ THE NUTONES: Jump Figaro Jump/ MIKE PEDECIN QUINTET: Shake A Hand/ THE MIKE PEDECIN QUINTET: Disc Jockey's Boogie/ THE PLAYBOYS: Everybody's Going Crazy/ Mambo Boogie

VARIOUS ARTISTS Collectables 5326 Be Bop Boogie ● CD $11.98 $8.98
CD issue of Krazy Kat LP 826. Second volume of rock'n'roll from the Gotham vaults, mostly stuff that owner Ivin Ballen bought for possible release. The tracks on Side one were obtained from the Oak label in North Carolina and features Don Hager and The Hot Tots doing 2 takes of the rockin' River Rock , Be Bop Boogie and a couple of lesser tunes. Rockin' Ronnie walks through Boppin' The Blues but Glenn Johnson & The Acorns' alternate take of Having Little Heart Attacks is real fine with some hot guitar. Bobby Green & The Sportsmen open Side two with a swingin' Sweet Thing , Johnson plods through a couple more numbers, but Dudley Callicutt & The Go Boys, after weezing a lame ballad really cut loose on Get Ready Baby . The Derocher Sisters wail an awful ditty and then The Go Boys close things out with a pretty fair instrumental, Ramble . (AE)
DUDLEY CALLICUT & THE "GO" BOYS: Get Ready Baby/ Heart Trouble/ THE DEROCHER SISTERS: Saturday Night/ THE GO BOYS: Ramble/ BOBBY GREEN AND THE SPORTSMEN: Sweet Thing/ DON HAGER AND THE HOT TOTS: Be Bop Boogie (previously Unreleased)/ I Love You Dear Forever (unreleased Take)/ Liza Jane Bop (previously Unreleased)/ River Rock/ River Rock (previously Unreleased)/ GLENN JOHNSON & THE ACORNS: Having Little Heart Attacks (previously Unreleased)/ Putting It Together/ Run Here Honey/ ROCKIN' RONNIE: Boppin' The Blues (unreleased Take)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Hi HEXD 44 Hi Records - The Early Years ● CD $19.98 $12.98
57 tracks, 136 mins, recommended
Previously available as two separate CDs. The Hi record label came into being in 1957, the brainchild of Ray Harris, whose two earlier Sun singles had gone nowhere, and Memphis songwriters and musicians Bill Cantrell and Quintin Claunch. Their attempt to find a distinctive but successful sound found enough local, and even some national, success that Hi became, between the glory days of Sun and the rise of Stax, the sound of Memphis. The major hits of Hi's earliest years were Smokie (Part Two) by the Bill Black Combo, Haunted House by Gene Simmons, and Tuff by Ace Cannon, all included here. Lesser known but solid cuts on the program include Daydreamin' by Carl McVoy, Skating in the Blue Light by the Charmettes, Lovin' Lil by Tommy Tucker, Judy by Bill Reeder, 26 Miles to Joliet by Darlene Wallace, and I Want to Hold You by Teddy Reddell. The second volume traces Hi's output throughout the 60's. The program opens with seven selections by Jerry Jaye, including My Girl Josephine and I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water. Tommy Tucker and Narvel Felts each merit four tracks. Tucker performs Shackles and Chains and I'm in Love with a Shadow, both influenced by the early sound of Johnny Cash. Felts offers interesting countrified covers of Since I Met You Baby and A Little Bit of Soap. Other featured performers include Charles Eldred, Murray Kellum, Gene Sutton, Gene Simmons, Jay B. Lloyd, Jerry Arnold, the Bill Black Combo, and Ace Canon. The 28 page booklet has extensive notes and song by song discussion, unfortunately they are printed in white on gray and so are difficult to read. (DH/FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Stardust 1072 James Dean Era ● CD $18.98 $10.98
CD + DVD - Essential for James Dean fans
This is an interesting set. 1st there's a CD with a lot of hard rockin' 50s tunes, hits ( Elvis - That's Alright Mama (Louisiana Hayride version), Little Richard - Tutti Frutti) & cult( Elroy Dietzel & The Rhythm Bandits - Rockin' Bones, Dwight Pullen - Sunglasses After Dark) as well as Marilyn Monroe singing I Wanna Be Loved By You & both sides of James Dean's very rare single Dean's Lament/ Jungle Rhythm - Dean's on bongos. This is all interspersed with soundbites of 50s mostly anti-rock'n'roll. The treat is the second disc, a DVD with three of Dean's rare starring TV appearances in their entirety. There's "Something For An Empty Suitcase" from Campbell's Soundstage 1953, two years before "Rebel Without A Cause", "The Unlighted Road " (Schlitz Playhouse Of Stars '55) & "I'm A Fool" (co-Starring Natalie Wood - General Electric Playhouse '54) hosted by Ronnie Reagan. All are with original commercials. Then there's Dean's famous driving safety public service announcement & an extremely rare Pepsi commercial with Dean. There's an outtake from "Giant", photos of Dean shot at a car race, & trailers for the three Dean movies. Booklet with extensive notes & it comes in a slipcase. (GM)

Summer's not over yet! There's still plenty of time to feel sand between your toes, smell the oceans breezes, catch a wave.or at least listen to one more bitchin' surf comp. Lesser known vocal tracks by the Surfaries, great instrumental bands like The Galaxies and The Blazers etc. On top of that you get rare band incarnations from '60s pop songwriting svengalis P.F. LINK WRAY & THE WRAYMEN Epic EK 47904 Walkin' With Link ● CD $12.98 $8.98
Well you can knock me over with a bass string, Sony has had the smarts to dig into the Epic/Okeh vaults and put out some prime Link twangers. Not only have they reissued the rare Epic LP 3661 but they've added the Okeh single Rumble Mambo and the Epic 45 Ain't That Lovin' You Baby/ Mary Anne . There's also lots of hilarious studio chatter leading into the tunes with producer Chuck Sagle sounding like your typical slick oldtime New York record guy - "the drive is the whole thing with these kids today." In addition there are 5 previously unissued tunes including a savage Dance Contest and a pair of alternate takes, making 20 cuts in all. I'd suggest that you grab this one pronto. It's the reissue of the year and you also get a cool little booklet with boss pics and notes by Kicks University dean Billy Miller.
