R&B Jukebox Hits - 1947, Vol. 1 |
● CD $15.98 $11.98 |
24 tracks, 72 mins, highly recommended
What was shakin' and bakin' in 1947? Open The Door Richard was
certainly a craze. This song was originally a Vaudeville skit successfully
performed, individually, by both John "Spider Bruce" Mason and Dusty
Fletcher; by '47 it was a novelty song waiting to be a hit. On this CD,
Count Basie and his Orchestra and Dusty Fletcher treat us to two grand
versions, respectively. There were a lot of great versions of the song: my
favorite is Louis Jordon's, which isn't here, though he is represented on
the disc. Ole '47 was a banner year for Louis Jordon and His Tympani Five
and they deservedly have three monster tracks, Texas and Pacific/ Jack,
You're Dead, and Boogie Woogie Blue plate. LJ & The T5 weren't
the only ones boogieing, either; Sonny Boy Williamson is workin' real hard
to Shake The Boogie, Eddie Vinson and His Orchestra got the Old
Maid Boogie going on, and Albert Ammons and His Rhythm Kings are even
doing the Swanee River Boogie. Not everybody got the boogie though;
Lionel Hampton and His Septet with Dinah Washington got the Blow Top
Blues real bad and the New Orleans Blues that Johnny Moore's
Three Blazers have might just be incurable. All that and a whole lot more
was happening; the thing that ties them all together is that they all had a
big time in '47. So, when you get the chance to pick up this winner,
remember the words of Julia Lee and Her Boyfriends when they sang
"(Opportunity Knocks But Once) Snatch and Grab It." (JM)

A companion disc to Excello's "Heart of Southern Soul". This time out the

Wallace Brothers, and a soul version of Tommy James's Crystal Blue
Persuasion by the Kelly Brothers. Impressive late 60's to mid-70's dance

expensive reissue features fine sound quality and the earlier English
issue's liner notes. (DH)

31 tracks, 77 min., highly recommended
A particularly nice compilation of recordings made in the late 50's for this
Nashville, Tennessee label, and one which, unlike most earlier Excello
collections, focuses strictly on the group sound. Some of the numbers are
expected and often reissued, such as Little Darlin' by the Gladiolas,
Rolling Stone by the Marigolds, and Oh Julie by the
Crescendos. But most are much less commonly available, including the
previously unreleased Don't Say Tomorrow by the Marigolds; the a
cappella School Daze, the previously unreleased Pretty Little Girl,
and Now That She's Gone by the delightful King Krooners; The Magic
of You by the Themes; and I'm So Glad by the Meloaires. There are
some real gems here. And the production values are high, with several
vintage photos and solid notes by Cub Koda of Goldmine Magazine. (DH)

An Introduction To New Orleans R&B |
● CD $11.98 $8.98 |
15 tracks, recommended
Fine collection of New Orleans R&B with contributions from the great Allen
Toussaint on most tracks. Four of the tracks were recorded in the early 60s
for Bobby Robinson's Fury label - two each by Lee Dorsey and Bobby Marchan
including Dorsey's hit Do-Re-Mi. The remaining tracks are from the
mid 60s, recorded for Toussaint & Marshall Sehorn's Deesu and Tou-Sea labels
and contemporary soul sounds to the New Orleans sound including sides by
Warren Lee, Willie West (the superb deep soul song Greatest Love),
Ray Algere, Willie Harper (a fine cover of Ernie K-Doe's A Certain Girl),
Zilla Mayes and others. Sound quality on a number of tracks is muffled but
music is consistently fine. (FS)

Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol. 1 |
● CD $17.98 $11.98 |
A truly fascinating album - it's a real shame there is no
documentation. This features 24 rare tracks of vocal group harmony from the
late 50s recorded in Jamaica. Some of the tracks are straight ahead copies
of American doo-wop stylings while others have a more distinctively Jamaican
flavor with that distinctive "blue beat" rhythm making it's presence felt.
Artists include The Jiving Juniors (an important group which featured a
young Derrick Herriot), The Moonlighters, Sir Jablonski and Group, The Blues
Busters, The Charm Kings, Chuck & Dobby and others. Sound quality varies
from track to track but is generally good and the music is consistently
fine.

Soul Galore - 60s, 70s & Northern Soul
Classics |
● CD $18.98 $12.98 |
2 CDs, 40 tracks, 152 mins, highly recommended
Can you stand just one more Northern Soul compilation? If so, then check out
"Soul Galore" - this 2CD, 40 song collection highlights some juicy nuggets
from both Detroit (Motown artists like a Diana Ross-less Supremes, Edwin
Starr, and Gladys Knight & the Pips performing album cuts and obscure
singles) and Chicago (Aretha's sister Erma Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Tyrone
Davis, and Jerry Butler's brother Billy), while leaving room for the odd
track from elsewhere (Memphis is represented by Willie Mitchell and Al
Green; likewise, Miami by Betty Wright and Gwen McCrae). Although there are
some rather strange (Johnny Jones' note-for-note cover of Hendrix's
Purple Haze, for one) and familiar (Young Holt Unlimited's masterful
instrumental Soulful Strut) things here, there's more than enough
cool rarities to keep R&B fans coming back for more. Most tracks date from
the late 60's/early 70's, prime time for this kind of music and the guys in
charge did an excellent job of compiling this CD. And don't let the rash of
well-known artists put you off; no one ever said that Northern Soul consists
solely of obscure performers. On the contrary, the presence of big and
medium names performing lesser-known songs is tantalizing rather than
off-putting. Especially when one is introduced to Erma Franklin belting out
Whispers (Getting Louder) and Betty LaVette's brassy rendition of
What Condition My Condition is In (hit covered by Kenny Rogers and the
First Edition), or re-introduced to a great lost tracks like the Four Tops'
Something About You and Wilson's white-hot Soul Galore. The
packaging is good, and the sound quality is ok; in fact, the only thing that
prevents me from giving this an "essential" rating is that some of the
mixes/mastering are a bit weird (the horns on Soulful Strut are mixed
too low, for example). If you're a purist, then quibbles like this might
make all the difference; if not, then have a ball, toots! (GMC)
