This first volume in the two
from Collectables that will review the output of New York's Gone Records is
a winner. The featured artists to some extent are the Dubs with four cuts
here: Don't Ask Me to Be Lonely/ Such Lovin'/ Beside My Love, and
Chapel of Dreams. Numbers by other contributors include the delightful
and previously unreleased Bad News by the Carouseles (sic), Angel
Face by the Neons, Spanish Lace by the Four Seasons, How Was I
to Know by the Uniques, and Stay As You Are by the Channels. Fine
sound, decent graphics featuring an original Gone record label, and, instead
of notes, a complete listing of the tracks on all of the discs in this

● CD $14.98 $8.98 |
24 tracks, 63 min., recommended
A companion disc to Excello's "Heart of Southern Soul". This time out
the focus is on Southern soul singers who recorded for the Excello and Abet
labels and who at the time were aiming for a fully orchestrated, big city
sound. Featured numbers include I've Got to Hold Back by Freddie
North, Judy by Frank Howard, That's Loving You by Percy
Wiggins, I'm Not Your Regular Woman by Lucille Mathis, Even If the
Signs Are Wrong by Shirley Brown, Bigger and Better by the
Hytones, No More Tears by Bessie Jones, Thanks a Lot by the
Wallace Brothers, and a soul version of Tommy James's Crystal Blue
Persuasion by the Kelly Brothers. Impressive late 60's to mid-70's dance
music in a set that was previously issued by Ace of England. This less
expensive reissue features fine sound quality and the earlier English
issue's liner notes. (DH)

The Heart Of Southern Soul |
● CD $14.98 $8.98 |
24 tracks, 68 min., recommended
A dynamite collection of soul tracks originally recorded for the
related Excello, Abet, and Sims labels between 1966 and 1974. Located in
Nashville, Tennessee, Excello was perfectly situated to capitalize on that
particularly combination of black (gospel) and white (country) musical
traditions that has generated much of America's most interesting music. The
evidence for that well worn assertion this time around includes I'm
Falling in Love Again by the Kelly Brothers, That's All I Can Do
by Kip Anderson, A Soldier's Sad Story by Tiny Watkins, Pretty
Little Thing by the Interpreters, Gonna Need Somebody by Stacy
Lane, The Price Is Too High by Slim Harpo, and Do Your Thing
by Marva Whitney. Great music, mostly ballads, all of it issued last year on
England's Ace label. This domestic version features the original cover art
and solid liner notes at a somewhat more attractive price. Get it while you
can. (DH)

● CD $14.98 $9.98 |
31 tracks, 77 min., highly recommended
A particularly nice compilation of recordings made in the
late 50's for this Nashville, Tennessee label, and one which, unlike most
earlier Excello collections, focuses strictly on the group sound. Some of
the numbers are expected and often reissued, such as Little Darlin'
by the Gladiolas, Rolling Stone by the Marigolds, and Oh Julie
by the Crescendos. But most are much less commonly available, including the
previously unreleased Don't Say Tomorrow by the Marigolds; the a
cappella School Daze, the previously unreleased Pretty Little Girl,
and Now That She's Gone by the delightful King Krooners; The Magic
of You by the Themes; and I'm So Glad by the Meloaires. There are
some real gems here. And the production values are high, with several
vintage photos and solid notes by Cub Koda of Goldmine Magazine. (DH)

Sax Kari - Fumigate Funky Broadway |
● CD $16.98 $12.98 |
29 tracks, good
A collection of 29 tracks recorded in New
Orleans between 1963 and 1968 under the guidance of the remarkable Sax Kari
- a figure who appears prominently as a musician, producer, songwriter and
more from the late 40s through to the present day. His work is represented
on dozens of labels including important independents as well tiny labels
some of them run by himself. The music here represents the full range of
Kari's eclectic talents from the down home bllues of Polka Dot Slim to the
lounge music of Kari himself with The Codes. We also hear urban blues
(Warren Lee Taylor), funky New Orleans R&B (Chris Kenner), soul (Charles
"Soul" Brown) and more. There's lots of good music here that's not available
elsewhere but I find it hard to recommend this because of the poor sound
quality. Tracks are presumably mastered from worn 45s and the sound is
frequently distorted. I know these records are not that easy to come by but
I think with greater effort to track down better copies and with more care
in remastering it could have been much better. (FS)

Slow Down Baby by Bob Gaddy, Don't Give Me No More Than You Can Take
by the Five Royales, All That Wine Is Gone by the Echoes, and
Louisiana Walk by Phillip Walker. The candid cover photo features
Thurston Harris and the Lamplighters, relaxing and sharing a laugh at some
night spot. Don't come to this collection for ballads, but if it's shuffle
rhythm jumps that you crave, this disc and this series may well by the place

Rounder 2087 |
Keys To The Crescent City |
● CD $15.98 $9.98 |
This set features three Nola piano wizards - Eddie Bo,
Willie Tee, and Art Neville - plus ivory depressions by Berkeley's own
Charles Brown. Produced no doubt to increase sales potential for each of the
artist's own Rounder albums. Keyboard king Charles kicks off with three
after hours selections, including the doom-laden spiritual Nobody Knows
The Trouble I've Seen. Eddie Bo (who today looks like Aladdin's spirit
of the lamp) plays three funky tunes, one embellished with strained Ray
Charles-like vocal colorings. Wilson Turbinton, a.k.a. Willie Tee,
demonstrates his ability to play jazz and R&B effectively while his voice
remains as mellow and soulful as ever. Art closes with four funky Yamaha
yammerings, the first being the churchy Hey Pocky Way followed by the
Dr. John-ish Another Blues Stringer. The set ends with Art's
rendition of Big Chief which strays off into jazz ornaments and
interesting rhythmic patterns. Good concise booknotes. (OLN)

Saxophony/ Honkers & Shouters |
● CD $15.98 $9.98 |
21 tracks, 60 min., recommended
Included in this set are 3
NYC-based tenor saxophonists : Jimmy Wright, Jesse Powell and Alonzo
Buddy Lucas, players that harmony group fans should know. Take Jimmy
One-Note Wright - his playing is heard on George Goldner's groups like
The Cleftones, The Crows, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, The Valentines, and
The Wrens. If these groups trigger something in you, you'll love his 5
tracks (3 unissued) here, in particular Move Over and the slow blues
2:20 AM. As for Jesse Powell & Buddy Lucas, they were used often in
backing up The Cadillacs & single Jubilee artists like Little Sylvia & Edna
McGriff (see: Sequel CD 750), eventually recording their own albums for Kapp,
Jubilee and Tru-Sound Records. As for the star of this set, that must be
tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate, whose six tracks (2 unissued) here with The
Rene Hall Sexette are some of his first after leaving Count Basie in 1949.
Guitarist Rene Hall (these are his first recordings under his name) would
also go on & have a career with Specialty Records, recording behind Larry
Williams, and having a major role in the careers of Sam Cooke & Bobby
Womack. They alone are worth the price of admission. Also included in this
CD is one track by the late New Orleans drummer Louis Freddie Kohlman,
possibly featuring tenor saxophonist Sam Butera. (EL)

28 tracks, 68 min., recommended
Volume five in this
distinguished series ventures into the years 1960-1965 and, to both my
surprise and delight, maintains its earlier high musical standard. The sound
here is generally that softer early 60's sound to be sure, and there are
more white artists in evidence; nonetheless, if you can handle occasional
violin accompaniment, most of it's pretty darn good. Highlights include
Cruise to the Moon by the Chaperones, Teenage Paradise by the
Volumes, This I Swear by the Dubs, Our Wedding Day by the
Shells, Lonely Road by the Passions, Two Friends by the Bob

● CD $15.98 $11.98 |
20 tracks, 48 min., recommended
In spite of its being a
label known best for its substantial jazz catalog, Los Angeles' Tampa
Records also recorded an interesting and enjoyable mix of energetic
instrumentals, doo-wop numbers, and solo rock 'n' roll cuts. Vocal group
fans should enjoy My Love is True and Trying by the Saxons,
Be My Love Be My Love and Tell Me by Tony Allen, So Shy by
the Flannels, and the rocking Thank You Baby by the Sparklers. And
there's plenty of juice in Dungaree Hop and Blue Jean Shuffle,
two instrumentals by Plas Johnson, and in the vocals What a Way to Say
Goodbye by Lucy Campo, and the Elvis-influenced Make It by Billy
Devroe. According to the liner notes here, label owner Robert Scherman did
not believe in the then prevalent practice of paying disc jockeys to play
his records. That may help to explain why there are no well known hit
records in this set. But don't be fooled by that. This is the good stuff:
fine music, solid sound quality, and informative notes. (DH)

Geater Davis, Chet Davenport, Bobby Hall, Bobby Jay and others along with a
bit of blues (Guitar Reed), rock 'n' roll (Mack Allen Smith) and general
weirdness (Little Shelton singing old Frankie Ford and Huey Smith songs over
original backing track but with additional instruments and phony dubbed in
applause). Westside has a tendency to sometimes give us more than we really
need and this is the case here. There's quite a bit of pedestrian material
here and the four Little Shelton tracks would not have been missed if they
had all been left off. A carefully compiled single CD with say 30 tracks
would have been excellent - as it is this collection is bloated.
