IAN & SYLVIA Vanguard 77020 Live At Newport ● CD $15.98
15 tracks, 44 min., highly recommended A particularly nice entry from Vanguard's current Newport Folk Festival series, composed of live, lyrical, and often intense performances by this fine Canadian duo from the 1963 and 1965 festivals. The playlist includes Oh Katy Dear, Un Candien Errant, V'le Le Bon Bent, Royal Canal, Red Velvet, Song for Canada, Someday Soon, Play One More, You Were On My Mind, and Four Strong Winds. Sparsely accompanied and beautifully sung from start to finish, with excellent presence in the sound, solid notes, and several vintage photos of the then handsome couple. (DH)

BURL IVES Bear Family BCD 15667 A Little Bitty Tear - The Nashville Years, 1961-65 ● CD $113.98
5 discs, 144 tracks, 365 min., recommended This comprehensive retrospective covers the years 1961-1965, when folk singer Ives was at his most country-sounding, doing his recording in Nashville under the direction of Owen Bradley and experiencing his greatest chart successes. His hits during this time period include the title tune here, Funny Way of Laughing/ Call Me Mr. In-Between/ Mary Ann Regrets/ The Same Old Hurt/ This Is All I Ask, and Pearly Shells. A man of many talents, Ives found success on stage, screen, and even television as an actor. And his singing brought his fame as a radio performer, a member of the all star folk ensemble the Union Boys, and a pop singer. In 1948 he recorded a version of Blue Tail Fly with the Andrews Sisters and enjoyed a top twenty hit with a version of Lavender Blue. I've read elsewhere that his financial success was regarded by some of his early folk music associates as something of a sell-out. Whether you accept that view or not, Ives success and long-lasting influence are undeniable, and this Bear Family set showcases his most successful musical period with that company's typical thoroughness. Excellent stereo sound, discographic information, a 20 page, LP-sized booklet with fine notes written by Joseph F. Laredo, and many fine black and white photos from a portrait session that must predate the music here by at least ten years. (DH)
