BRUCE COCKBURN Columbia 48737 Big Circumstance ● CD $11.98
For a "folk" singer Cockburns' work has a very modern sound. Intricate electric guitars, keyboards, modern percussion and slick production give him a sound between the likes of Richard Thompson and Dire Straits. Cockburns' lyrics are thick with metaphor, rich in imagery, and laced generously with rage at injustice and inequity. Well crafted, complex, very up-to-date protest songs. Listen to this record a while and you will find yourself humming songs about South American ecology or Asian politics or existential philosophy. Includes a complete lyric sheet and a "Inspected by..." tag. Good stuff out of Canada.

RY COODER Warner Bros. 3651 The Slide Area ● CD $12.98
8 songs from 1982, including Gypsy Woman, Blue Suede Shoes, I Need A Woman .

RY COODER Warner Bros. 25639 Get Rhythm ● CD $12.98
Ry, along with his superb cast of mates, which includes accordion wizard Flaco Jimenez, Van Dyke Parks on keyboards and a driving rhythm tandem of Jorge Calderon(b) & Jim Keltner(d), has created a very funky & playful repertoire of songs that will make you want to join in and second line for the entire set. Since Ry has written only 2 new songs for the LP, his obscure search for engaging covers, with the painful exception of Elvis' All Shook Up , is rewarding both lyrically & musically. Ry's version of Johnny Cash's Get Rhythm jumps from the opening bars, a solo version of Chuck Berry's 13 Question Method sets up a calypso cautionary tale - Women Will Rule The World . There is a tende reprise of Across The Borderline from the excellent The Border soundtrack with Harry Dean Stanton guesting on vocals. One of my favorites is Ry's own Going Back To Okinawa , a simple vamp with an irresistable bottom end to it. Let's Have A Ball starts romping from the gate with unbridled finesse and unrelenting drive. Not the most cohesive Cooder but it certainly kicks out the most jams. (SG)

THE CUMBERLAND THREE Rhino 70739 Songs Of The Civil War ● CD $10.98
For this reissue, Rhino combined Roulette's 1960 releases Civil War Almanac Vol. 1 (The Yankees) and Vol. 2 (The Rebels) into one neat folk statement. The songs are arranged in sparse vocal trio settings with banjo and guitar, and feature singer John Stewart (who moved on to Kingston Trio fame). The twelve rebel songs are presented before the eleven Yankee songs, probably because Stewart preferred them. Not being partial to either faction, I prefer the Yankee portion, which the trio seem to be more comfortable interpreting. A couple of the songs list Cumberland Trio members as composers, which seems to indicate they may not have been sung on the battlefield. But this isn't meant to be a scholarly effort. Overall a nice disc, including Down To Washington/ Yellow Rose Of Texas/ Battle Hymn Of The Republic/ Picket's Lament. (GR)
